Free £20 from Barclaycard for loyal existing customers.

As we all know, a lot of companies offer incentives to prevent you from cancelling accounts. I phoned Barclaycard (0844 811 9111) tonight and they immediately offered me £20 to prevent me from closing. Seems like a very standard offer they just hand out without any really pressure from the customer.

The agent gave out the usual BS about how my account has been kept in good standing and I am a valued customer.

Surely worth a shot for everyone else eh?

Alternatively call their "calling from abroad" number 01604 230230 as 0800 can be expensive from mobiles.

gave you heat, it took me forever and a day getting off the phone when cancelling, will never touch them again because of it

It would take more than 20 quid to persuade me to stay

Tried it tonight and it worked. Thanks Op.

Lucky you. Not a deal, op specific. Cold.

Clearly not specific if they hand it out to any customer that phones.

I did the same a few months ago and got £50 credited to my account I was genuinely going to close!

dare not ring..........they might actually agree to close my Barclaycard account!

Is this current account or credit card.

I've got £50 credit 2 months in a row when I threatened to close the account

Do you need to be a good (ie pay loads of interest a month) customer for this to work?

Paid them about thrupence over the years, not counting a 3% transfer fee

In two minds as whether to cancel, or keep in case of future need

did u had to give them any reason for closing the account?? i have not used this card for more than 2 months?
just wondering what reason do i give them?

Barclaycard is a credit card and separate to Barclays Bank.

Just for the record, if this is their first offer, this tends to mean you are in terms of their tiers of customers ratings, 2nd from bottom least important to them. The next step down is a just close the account when you ask without any real argument. By the way you risk having the account just closed if you are not flagged for being retained.

This is not a deal if you ask me, it's luck of the draw based on a number of factors including your account history, credit record, value to the business since you signed up to them, how much you earned them the past year (both through spending and interest) and the likelyhood you will spend in the future. You really have no way to know if you are flagged to be retained or not.

Also another point to remember is while you might get this once or twice over a few months eventually your luck will run out and you'll drop off of the list of accounts they want to retain as you're not profitable.

I have a Barclay's Oyster CC I signed up 2 about 5 years ago after seeing it as a cash back deal on here, cant remember how much cash back was for! never really used it for anything much probably less than dozen times a year for a few quid mostly for deals on here. but will call them 2moz c what they say! To be fair, you can work most of that out yourself. Problem (for me) is that I haven't earnt them much money recently

I was given £50 to keep my Barclaycard credit card open (about 18 months ago) when I asked them to close it, and I had not used it for sometime. I had only used it once to do a balance transfer from another card, and had then transferred that balance from the Barclaycard to another card leaving a NIL balance. Of course I kept it open, spent the money, then asked them to close it again!! The reason I gave was the same both times - that I wanted to do a balance transfer in the future and intended applying for another Barclaycard but I would not be able to do that if I had an existing Barclaycard. Barclaycard offer some of the longest 0% balance transfer periods - up to 28 months - and sometimes also reduce the rate charged to less than 3%.

They did not offer me any more money the 2nd time I asked them to close the account!

I called them last week and said that I wanted to close my account and they weren't that fussed! I managed to pull up the girl in question on some details and asked to speak to her supervisor. He offered me 0% interest for 12 months and when I declined his last offer was a 1% cashback deal for 6 months which I accepted. Something for nothing so cheers!
