Free 25gb Online Backup (not an online backup solution in the conventional sense per RoughNeckTwoZero)!

I know the MS haters amongst you will vote this code but this is amazing, 25gb of storage for free, I am speechless. I will be signing up tonight!

Store and share your files online

Windows Live SkyDrive offers 25GB of free online storage. You can use SkyDrive storage to back up your files online for free, or to share large files with others. You can assign permissions and set folders to public or private, to help you share individual files with only people that you select. SkyDrive also gives you access to free Office Web Apps like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint so you can create, share and work online with others. With SkyDrive you can also create Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents, even without having Microsoft Office installed.

no autosync is pretty poor these days imo

link doesnt work either

I know, link is here: windowslive.co.uk/sky…ive

It is showing as the direct link but for some reason the link takes you to the wrong place

Is this just an affiliate link to the Microsoft Store and therefore spam? The proper address for Skydrive is windowslive.co.uk/sky…ive

Also it's nothing new. Skydrive has been around for ages. It also has a lot of restrictions (maximum file size) certain file types not supported etc which make it unsuitable as a complete backup solution. Won't vote it cold as is a good service but not very hot either.

This isn't spam and I have reported for the link to be fixed. It is the above address in the details, for some reason it is going to the MS store though

I use Skydrive for a few important things I might need to access when I am away from my normal PC. I believe my Live Mesh stuff is stored on Skydrive now too. I use that to sync files and favorites etc between systems.

I love the way people vote free 25gb of storage as cold.

Bit harsh I think.

I said MS haters would vote cold but that's the problem with forums that are frequently mostly by Unix techies

For the record I am a Windows System Administrator and big fan of MS (don't like Apple/Linux fan boys either). I'm even off to TechEd next week!

Just think that it's not a hot deal for the reasons I said. A better title for your deal may have got more heat as Skydrive is not an online backup solution in the conventional sense.

Bit of a sweeping statement!

Edited title, this should get scorching now

Windows Live Mesh will sync 5gb with skydrive and more between computers.

LOL

Was think more like '25GB Online storage for your documents and photos' but I love it! Now voting hot!

does anyone know a free backup where you can transfer folders rather than files - I have all my music (about 5 gb) in one folder which is then sorted by artist in sub folders - I would like to be able to just save the whole music folder in 1 go

yeh lets face it for all the MS probs at least their apps are midly intuitive (well except office2007), unlike unix/linux and not as locked down as apple

adrive.com (50GB free)

problem with skydrive (may have changed now) is that the maximum file size per file was only 50MB. That just isn't big enough now even though they give you 25GB storage. I don't want to be limited to the size of individual files - and yes it is easy to get over 50MB when you are talking about storing video files from all these HD cameras that are now around everywhere. I don't want to split the files etc just to get under 50MB

If I were you, I'd use Drop Box - it's the most convenient Cloud backup program I've tested. you get 2GB of free space to begin with(which is not that much compared to 25, but bare with me), and then by referring people you can get it up to 18.75GB.

it has autosync, RSS feed, timeline, and very user friendly interface

works like a treat.

been using my 25gig live drive for a year or so and then the 5gb before that. All my photo's are there so I can access them anywhere in the world. Also use the iphone messenger app to access them

I found this: nysicsclubhouse.wordpress.com/201…-0/

It's simply amazing. I now have the skydrive appearing as a z: drive in my computer and can autosync my backups to it. I couldn't recommend this more!

I am not sure what you mean by media files. I am syncing my pictures at the moment and once they're uploaded will do my documents etc which is all I really tend to worry about losing.

I would have thought I could copy any type of file to the z: drive as it acts like any sort of drive on my machine

In a recent magazine article about online storage, this company was given the top rating

dropbox.com/

There is a free option and extra storage is available

Fair enough, but have you read the link I provided as I think this then makes the MS backup a better option IMHO

looks good to me... will try tonight..

I use dropbox at the moment and highly recommend it. Been using it since it was in closed beta.

I am using a mac, is skydive compatible with macs? I know there is a web interface but what about mounting the drive?

Dave.

I am not a techy and have no idea. You could always try it and see or Google it?

I did have a look around before posting but doesn't seem to be anything.

Micrsoft don't advertise any mac support. I did read there is possibly FTP to the account which with a few bits of software could mount on the mac but not an ideal solution.

Shame cause the mac equivalent, mobile me, is £100 a year!

I've started using SugarSync. 5GB on free plan. Sync by selecting folders. Download app which sits in tray and autosyncs files. Can share uploaded files.

how is skydrive better than DropBox???when with skydrive you get what.... … how is skydrive better than DropBox???when with skydrive you get what.... 5 GB of cloud space(or less?)? and you have to pay for expanding. where as with beloved DropBox you get a standard acount of 2 GB, but you have a chance to expand it till 18.25 for FREE!!!!!how do you expand? first find someone who can refer you to DropBox, and use the link they provided. you get additional 250MB for that. Then complete DropBox training(receive 250 or 500mb of additional free storage for that). Then tie Dropbox to your .edu account, and start referring people. you will get 500 MB for each person that joins Dropbox using your referral link. If you want to stop worring about the precious data you could loose, start using DropBox today!

eh? Are you blind?

This discuss above lets you do folders. Read the link posted, you select a folder, i.e. folders and it backs up all subfolders as well.
