Plex is a home media server solution. I just set one up and have been impressed with the free version. Keen to try the paid for features, this offer has come along at exactly the right time! If it works as well as I expect, I will probably upgrade to the lifetime membership at some point.

Having a plex pass unlocks playback on mobile devices, DVR functionality and offers many other benefits. More info here: support.plex.tv/art…ew/

How does plex work and what is the difference between free and paid for. I've tried setting it up on my xbox but get no server found.

Where did you set up your server? Plex usually used to play your own stored content so you could have your server on your PC to play content to your Xbox.

What you’ve installed on the Xbox is only the plex client. You also need the server part, which you could install on your PC.

There are loads of guides on how to set this up on Google and YouTube, but here is one to get you started:

No, it would need to be on a computer. Click on the following link to see a list of operating systems the Plex Media Server software can be installed on:

I got my 2000 1080p and 100 3d from Yify, changed name to yts not even sure there still going, id like to start doing again in 4k
Nice and easy setup..
I use Plex on my Mac and Apple TV, this allows me to watch it on my phone.

Now, I have paid for it - but I don't really know what EXTRA features I've gained from paying.

From what I've read since - these are features that the free version does - does that sound correct?

Doesn't make sense to me, but it works without paying perfectly fine, i did have to pay for the google app, that app works on 2 tvs, phone, tablet and any other Android device i log in with, with only one purchase of about £3.50, about 7y ago

As in you use the plex app on your phone? Mine is limited to 1 min of video as per the info here :

Until the mobile app is unlocked (through an in-app purchase or a Plex Pass subscription), video and music streamed from a Plex Media Server has a 1 minute limit, and photos will be watermarked.

Does yours work for over 1 minute for free?

Right...I didn't know that. No I can watch anything and download it to my phone too over mobile data. So it is worth it - I guess. Thanks for clarifying that.

From my experience rpi3 or rpi4 is the cheapest option to run own plex server.

Thats not what plex is really for, you are just watching plexes own content, as apposed to streaming/playing your own content on your own pms

It's my content, I'm streaming it from my Mac to my other devices. I just wondered if there was anything else it could do that I'm missing. Because, I don't tend to stream from my phone often so if I can still use the features without that - then I can get away with not paying.

There will be an Ipad app, but you will need to install the server on a devise on the list above posted by PaulT82
I used to love Plex and swore by it but of late it became a royal pain in the a***. Moved to Kodi - had to spend a bit of time customising but works a dream and looks great. Won’t be going back to Plex but good luck to all those who are enjoying it ... I was for a long time.

Can you do live TV and DVR on Kodi, or it it just for streaming media files? What I’m looking for is a whole of house video recorder and the ability to watch TV / recording outside of the house. Thanks.

Code not valid for me but probably because I used a code before. I only need the pass so I can search subtitles. Can't believe I have to pay for that feature now. Looking for an alternative platform.

The point as I see it of plex is that you set up a server with all your content on it then you can view it from any device, so you have a server, then clients, now many smart tv's have the plex client built in, or installable, so with one server you can then get content everywhere, even outside the home I believe (though not done yet, paid for option probably ?), however the min you get all excited and start installing clients on phones/ipads, it tells you you either have to have a plex pass or you have to pay a one off fee per device. So that's the deal, disappointed that I have missed the may the 4th deal, but I've only just got a basic system running on a raspberry pi, so perhaps a bit early to commit to a lifetime pass anyway. I will try the month free at some point, and even pay for a few months if I like it, and wait for another deal,

yes, that's what I have tried, I have used a raspberry pi 3b+ which seems to work fine, perhaps a little slow, the raspberry pi 4 should be a lot quicker, if I grow to like it I'll upgrade to one of those, but I had a number of 3's around the house so using them at the mo. It's got enough power to drive a 2.5" hard disk, so can store a lot of media on it. the good thing about a pi, is the very low power usage, meaning you can leave it on all the time. the bad things I guess it won't support many streams at once, and a bit thing with plex is that it transcodes your media to suit your target device, the pi isn't powerful enough to do this. This doesn't seem a problem with a home setup, because the tv can play all resolutions. but if you start trying on non hd tablets/phones, I guess the server won't be powerful enough and it won't work. However a rpi seems the best way to dip a toe in and try it out without going to great expense. If you don't like it, you can always use the pi for kodi or another product.
