I came across this in my local bank. A FREE 16-25 rail card just for opening a student account with them. The rail card is worth £120. I know its not for everyone and it is a bit of a hassle changing your current account ect but for a free 4 year rail card which you do not need to update each year i think its worth it.

Useful for me. Thanks

Normally have to been seen to actively using the account. Great deal if your looking to switch banks.

Not bad deal for students!

Great deal but I'm going to wait to see what other banks offer for opening a student account with them first

It's worth noting that you don't have to be 16-25, as long as you're a student you can get one. I did this a few years ago with Natwest and it saved me a ton of money. Hot for me (although no use as I'm no longer a student)

cold give only viable if staring or started a course at uni I'm 22 and would love this account but not at uni

Will it work if I leave and rejoin? lol

Just because a deal doesn't apply to you doesn't mean you should vote it cold. Its for a student account so yeah of course it's for people at uni.

Would have been really handy for my 16 year old son as he's starting college in Sept, but only for Uni students!

Damn, just had laser eye surgery to fix my stare, wouldn't have bothered if I had known it would exclude me from some deals:-(

Natwest also do this and have been doing it for a while now. It's up to 5 years with them, as well! Same conditions apply though, you have to have 3 "big" payments(student loan) and use it regularly(3 transactions a month, I think). I've just got my third one in the post(they send you a new one every year which expires the following end of July).

Presumably once you have the railcard you could stop using the account.

Well i spoke to the woman in the bank. She said to open the account that you needed 1 form of ID passport of Driving license, a student card and a letter of acceptance to your college or uni course. Its supposed to be used as your main account but aslong as you have £500 per term going in from student loan or bursary. She said per term only means twice a year! And the 4 year rail card is yours. You need to register for online banking to but that's easy.

Hi this could be because your son is 16 and wont be eligible for a bursary or student loan. I am at college and I'm entitled to it.

Are they still offering? Doesn't seem to be on their website for new applicants.

Would never open santander account, last year they charged me 50£ a DAY for overdraw, which they made

I can't find it either :/. They had an "existing customer" condition as well, but it was up to the end of July when I did it. I'd say inquire at a branch, though, just to make sure.

You can only get it by upgrading an existing account to a student account. I think there was a time stipulation as well (have to have had that account for x months).

Natwest no longer do this so it's a good deal

You can only apply with an unconditional offer letter from UCAS proving your place. It's correct that £500 must go into your account each term, but the lady I spoke to in branch said that this does not have to be from the student loans company, it can be from any source. I think it may also apply to people on a 1 year access course which leads to a place at university.

Not applicable for post grad students

It's only coming in use in October, which means if your railcard expires in the summer (which most students' do), you either have to buy a railcard and only use it for a few months or wait until October for the new railcard. The timing's not the best. The gadget insurance was a lot better - it covered mobile phones, printers, laptops etc! I complained about it to Santander on 0800 7317774 but they are only willing to do something about it if enough people flagged it up as an issue...

Railcard is a load of rubbish !! You can't use it before 10am which is usless as I am a full time student and apparently can't use it on the train if you haven't bought one at the station total waste of space, not a good deal at all for students.
