Free 4 Year 16-25 Railcard with a Santander 123 Student Current Bank Account

This has been posted before 6 months ago, credit to @saniman, However I thought i'd post it again as it is such a good deal. A yearly railcard normally costs £30, and with this deal, you'd make a saving of £120!
In order to be eligible, you must be starting an undergraduate course at Uni, or a level 4-7 apprenticeship. "If you're in your 2nd year of university or above, you must switch an account from another provider to us as part of your application." They will ask for a letter of acceptation or a university ID.

Worth noting that Railcards can be bought with Tesco Clubcard points (with the points being worth 3x the face value) - so a £30 railcard costs only £10 worth of points - one of the best uses for them IMHO.

Got a 2-Together railcard for me and the wife this way...

Sweet
Definitely worth having this special 4 Yr Railcard. It's a great freebie!

My son and daughter both had/have them, saving a considerable about of money when travelling by train. Even short local journeys off-peak.
And in July & August, the 1/3 off discount applies during peak hours too!
Heat, OP
Thanks for the reminder. Will look into this offer.
this is old,
I didn’t know if this, but then again I don’t need one , but because this benefits some people who weren’t aware, heat added

I currently have this bank account along with the railcard already but i don’t really like Santander banking app as it doesn’t show pending transactions. Am I able to switch to another student account and keep the railcard??
You also get a £1500 fee free overdraft with this account aswell

It's a one-off 4-Year Railcard obtained by using a voucher code from Santander, rather than 4x 1-Yr renewable Railcards.
It belongs to you now - you only had to qualify at the outset by meeting the eligibility conditions, so I don't think it'll be an issue keeping it if you move accounts. Best to check the t&c's though!
(However, you might not get full student goodies/benefits with a new Student a/c elsewhere - again, check before committing)

Okay thanks!

Just went to apply for this then realised I'm actually 28. Now I feel old and in the way.

Why? Do the holders cease being aged 16-25 between semesters?
I used this deal a few years ago when I started uni, honestly one of the best choices I ever made. Saved me so much money getting around. Sadly it expires this year

Public transport should be free for youngies & oldies...

this is old,

Is it - 18 to 25 seems quite young to me!

So long as you satisfy the requirement (i.e. you are a HE student on a 2yr+ degree course), you can still get it

You also get a £1500 fee free overdraft with this account aswell

Which increases to £2000.
The value of the £80 Amazon gift card and free year of student prime (£40) through the HSBC student account is higher, in my opinion

Won't be long before 'Logans Run' becomes reality. First they stop you applying for railcards then they start killing people over the age of 30. Mark my words, this is the thin end of the wedge.

Also worth noting that if you hold a Gold card you can purchase a railcard for someone else for £10.
Only found this out recently. So if you have a gold card you could buy your student offspring one for £10 which might make another student bank account offer more worthwhile in combination with this means of getting a railcard.

I got HSBC first then switched to Santander so I got both.

I believe it will, but to be honest it's easier just open another account like Monzo alongside and do your day-to-day spending on there instead of going through a full switch.

Can't buy a three year one (£70) with Tesco vouchers unfortunately

The name is misleading, it’s for all students 18+, I got this railcard from Santander for free when I open a student account which also, I believe gave me interest free overdraft of £1500 in the first two years of my course and £2000 in the last two years. I joined the university at 36 and used it for nearly 5 years. Great discount all the time, you add it once on the TrainLine app and you get the discount each time you buy a train ticket, you need to present it with the ticket when asked on the train, however, I was only asked once in 5 years to show it and unfortunately didn’t have it on me as changed from carrying a wallet to a mobile phone case but the guy was very understanding, just be aware of that as not all of them do.

The railcard is called 16-25 but as long as you are a student with 2 or more years of studies, anyone can get it through santander student account deal.

You can still apply for it at 28,I got it at 36 and used it for nearly 5 years until I graduated last November
If you're in London you can also get this added to your Oyster card for 1/3 off off-peak pay-as-you-go travel on the tube [and maybe buses?] - TfL. Just take it to a member of staff in a station and they'll activate it at an Oyster machine. I don't think it works for contactless so you'll need a proper Oyster card. You can get the same discount with 26-30, 60+, gold cards and Forces.

Orite Theresa, stick to taking benefits from the sick and poor, leave the students alone this year, yeah?
honestly i tried this but they ask you to switch current account and banks. so i don’t think it’s worth it. having to change payment, billing information and updating addresses
The lady in the photo definitely looked over 35
You can only open the account if you're 18, so card's not actually useful if you're 16. Am I missing something?!.
Who said you could use my girlfriends photo on this site OP??
I’m calling my Soliciter and getting ready to sue hotukdeals

Yes, I put the title as 18, but it was changed, as you're given a 16-25 card.

Yes I get that, but how does a 16yr old get this card to use, is there another freebie way to do this?!. Obvs I want to get one but need to open up an account for a 16yr old as well!

Only works if you're 18 and started university unfortuantly
My partner is going back to uni to do her masters, shes 23. Would she be eligible for this?
I'm 17 and stated uni in September. I know that it's for 18+ but is there anyway to get it before then?
