I couldn't believe it myself but I've looked through all the details and all you have to do is register for online banking and pay in £500 a month! You can even just close the account after getting the railcard!
I've already got a year recently but I'm going to ring up tomorrow and see if they'd be able to extend it somehow, although I see it unlikely.
I know, students, etc etc, but we're the ones securing this countries future, so see it as you wish

They won't be able to extend anything, you'll get a code and have to order a new one.
I don't know of any other student account that gives £100, nor any other that gives any freebies come to mind.
This is a relatively well known offer but I've not seen it on here before - have some heat
You're kidding, right? If not, have a look at this link and you'll be surprised.
Most banks used to offer the railcard, but that's (apparently) not what's wanted nowadays, being replaced by bigger overdrafts as the top choice.

(oh yes, true - the main link from the top post doesn't work, no)
santander.co.uk/uk/…nt/
So you've just proven that there are no student accounts that give away £100, that's what you were trying to do?
£100 worth of railcard for free isn't very impressive? Maybe you find a free flying disc from Halfords more impressive... or a free pack of colouring pens?
The link should work but I think HUKD try to add referral bits into it. I did a direct copy paste from the page on santander
No I didn't, and no I wasn't.
Son got his Student rail card via Santander last autumn and he finds it very useful - even gets the discount on all local journeys after 9.30 a.m. He's graduated now and has over 3 years left on the Rail card!
Oh! lol. I'll make an edit
Show us this legendary account which gives us £100
There are accounts that give you £100 for switiching - that's moving a current account somewhere else. So it's hardly £100 for free. And anyway, you can get this 4 year railcard and other accounts you want. I see this as a no brainer to those eligible.
I never said there was a "legendary account which gives us £100". I merely provided a link to demonstrate that there a lot of accounts that give 'us' freebies.
you have kind of proven him correct, no account comes close other than one other which is providing a £60 amazon voucher...
this is offering a £100 value free.
just looks like you are trying to start arguments.
If that's what you see, I suggest that you look again, including reading my comment at #17.
No, I find £100 in cash more impressive...
Why on Earth are you being so touchy? Of course it's still a good deal - I didn't say it wasn't. I was merely providing context because the OP "couldn't believe it" that they could get a 4 year railcard from a bank.
Why does it need to be a student account? The others will presumably launch their freebies closer to the new term, but this will probably be the best.
I guess being someone who is actually good with managing money, things like this don't overly impress me. Which as I've already said, doesn't therefore mean they aren't any good - just that they aren't "unbelievable".
Any chance you could give me the link to the £100 cash freebie?
Yes, I totally understand where you're coming from, if you're good with managing money, why would you want a railcard free for 4 years? Especially when you could just pay for it.
Halifax and the Co-operative Bank (£100 + £25 to charity) are running one at the moment. Numerous banks do it at numerous times throughout the year though.
Because the reason why I'm good with managing money is that I don't dismiss things like a free railcard, which will save me £150 odd (I'll be at university more than 4 years and have just received my 5th free year from Natwest) just because I could afford to get it with cash!
Thanks

You clearly said it wasn't very impressive and that banks had been doing it for years, implying that it wasn't a hot deal and it shouldn't be on here. Now you're saying it's a good deal and you'll be getting it to save you £150. So I don't understand, do you just not want anyone else to know about it? Because you are clearly heavily contradicting yourself.
As far as the free £100 is concerned, it certainly is not £100 free cash. There are conditions that have to be met which make it much more difficult than the free railcard. The account must become your primary current account, you have to transfer your direct debits over to the account, and you must deposit a certain amount into the account every month, before they put £100 into your account. Also, if you choose to use one of these switching services, which come with the £100, the current account you transfer out of is automatically closed.
Don't worry about that, they'll send you the code to redeem your railcard as soon as you open the account. Just get your railcard straight away, and then don't bother paying anything into the account, or you could even close it. This is what I did when I opened an account a year and a half ago and I had no problems.

I didn't imply anything of the sort - and have already corrected the assumption you've made that I think it's a bad deal several times. What more do you want? The OP described the deal as "unbelievable" - I was merely conveying that it's not unbelievable and is actually a rather standard deal.
No it doesn't need to become your main account and no you don't have to transfer direct debits (for Halifax anyway). If spending 2 minutes on internet banking transferring money in and out once for £100 doesn't appeal to you then sobeit. Yes the previous account closes - so what?
The vast majority of students will have more than that going into the account per term from their student loans etc.
Apparently not actually £500 a month
1. does it cost anything to own this account?
2. I'm an apprentice and I'm considered a student since i am with a college for it, I'm earning around £800 a month, am i eligible or do you need to be a Uni student?
In terms yeah but not monthly..
The railcard is for any 16-25 year old, but as the student account with santander is a student account, you'd presume it's just for them.
