Free admission to the Streatlam Galleries at the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle

Admission charges are normally £7.00 per adult but for a limited period all admission charges have been waived. This is a truly beautiful museum housed in an outstanding building in a wonderful part of County Durham.

The Barnard Castle treasure house, which opened in 1892, has been buffeted about internally in recent months during its first major transformation in a over a century, but its splendour is due to be fully revealed once more as 2009 unfolds.

However, from Monday 19 January until Friday 13 February this means that there will be limited access to the Museum, via the west wing, to allow for the finishing touches to be put to the Entrance Hall, Cafe and Shop.

During this time the superb suite of Streatlam Galleries, officially opened in 2007 by the Countess of Wessex, will remain open free of charge to all visitors, with two important new acquisitions Lucien Levy-Dhurmers The Autumn Bride and Philip Wilson Steers A View of Barnard Castle from the River on display. The galleries also feature an in depth study of Turners Bowes Tower, which was acquired earlier this year.

There will be an information point on site in the form of a portakabin, where it is proposed to offer light refreshments.

Fozza; you channged your avatar and confused me. Don't take much mind.

Great post this btw. I'd love to go, but a treck and a bit for me for a day out. Heated it up a bit though. Deserves to get past the 100+ mark.

Sorry about that - the flashing lights avatar was just for the festive season. Thanks for the heat - it certainly is a good deal and a beautiful museum if you are ever in the area.
