No need to go. The result will be... You need to top up your Aircon gas.
Don't know why so many negative comments.
It's simple.
To top up Aircon, you need to removed the engine and gearbox, replace the clutch and brake discs. Be grateful that they noticed and replaced the four dangerous tyres at the same time.

Why so you need a 'professional' to tell you your air con needs regassing?
Funny that when we tried to book the car in for a top up, they said they dont/can't just top up, they have to drain and refill, then after that if they find a leak they then charge you to fix.

Obviously anyone would charge you to fix a leak, or are you just talking about finding a leak and charge you regardless. Formula one don't charge you if there is a leak, they let you decide what you want to do or just leave with nothing to pay.

Top up your aircon with gas, test it to perfection, then go to Halfords.

That’s because the correct way to refill the system is to drain it and the fill it back up again, not just top it up as you say,it isnt like adding a bit of screen wash you know, the system has to be purged.

Don’t go!!! Tried charging me £900+ to fix my air con after I took it in just for a re-gas, as apparently the whole unit and pipes were damaged. Took it to a independent garage and all it needed was a regassing. Absolute scum Halfrauds
"Did you know your air conditioning loses charge every year, making it less efficient and making your car warmer?
Our air conditioning services keep your air con working properly by checking and topping up the refrigerant levels"

How is that legal ?!?!
Aircon should be a sealed system; if its "charge" decreases over time then it's got a leak and needs fixing.
"topping up" a leaking aircon is environmentally irresponsible.
I don't need a check - all my fluid leaked out about 18 months ago - now the aircon just doesn't work. There was a leak somewhere - but getting it fixed would probably be uneconomical given the age of the car.
the air-con gas top-up service is a load of hogwash and a waste of your money. If the car’s air-con is no longer blowing cool air or has begun to perform inadequately in very warm weather, a refrigerant top-up is unlikely to solve the problem.
A low refrigerant level means there is a leak in the air-conditioning system and this needs to be fixed first.
While on this topic, it is important to bear in mind that periodic maintenance of the air-con in your car (as in your home for that matter) is necessary to maintain performance.

This includes flushing and evacuating the system of the existing refrigerant, cleaning or replacing the filters and then re-charging with fresh refrigerant. For the car, such a service is not required annually, but do consider doing this for every 60,000km.

Just stay away from the air-con gas top-up providers.
DIY Aircon check:

1) Switch on aircon on the car you wish to check
2) Place hand near top of the vent after few minutes
3) If cold air blows then happy days
4) If not, take it for a regass
There is a good chance on quite a few cars that one of the seals in the pipework has gone hard and will leak, only small but will mean over time it will stop working.
Well at least the deal is cold 😨
Just for all you people saying if you've got gas missing then you have a leak....., WRONG (possibly)

Natural evaporation etc when in use means gas may need topping up / replacing every few years. Also as part of a regas your lube oil will be renewed to keep everything working ok and stop seals drying out or whatever.

It is well known that most cars will need periodic gassing, it does not mean you definitely have a leak.
Oil should be added at the same time as a re-gas as the only lubrication of the moving parts in the compressor is the oil that is carried in the gas. This oil is essential and generally not included in the DIY cans.
Depending on the machine used, a false 'leak' can sometimes be induced. This because some machines do a leak rest by generating a partial vacuum in the system that temporarily dislodges joint seals. The running system is under pressure and works the seals in the opposite direction. This is by no means a common problem but it does happen.
If you are concerned about diagnosis skills or leg lifting ability of your local garage, a visit to a commercial vehicle workshop with refrigeration facilities would be a worthwhile venture. They work in an environment that has massive financial implications for a below standard job. An articulated trailer carrying frozen food can ruin thousands of pounds worth of goods should the temperature rise too high!
Or just open the windows like we used to do in the olden days!
Air con stopped working recently on my old 4X4 I only use as a work horse. Local garage quoted £115 to check for any leaks and to regas. Any leaks etc would cost extra to repair. The vehicle is only worth around £900. The following day I saw a Groupon deal for ATS to do the same for £34.99. Once tested by them, if it needs more work than a simple regas, you get a refund. Bought the voucher and booked it into ATS last week. No leaks were found so it was regassed and is now fully working. I saw the mechanic examining the car and going through a checklist while I was waiting. I was expecting him to say tyres etc could do with being replaced but to my surprise he didn’t, he said everything was fine and even gave me free advice on the car I normally use. For an extra £10 they were offering to flush through the system but I didn’t go for that option.

Wouldn't cancel your appointment if I were you, all they'll do us attach a gauge to the point on your car which is used to top up your aircon gas, if it shows as being a bit low then they can top it up, think it costs about £30, it's up to you whether you have it done as is any other repairs, if you don't want it doing just leave, they won't lock you in the garage until you have your engine, gearbox and tyres replaced like the negative comments on here are suggesting.

It still helps. My air con was low and I was pretty sure but getting the levels checked helped me be 100% sure if it needed a gas refill. I'd suggest don't cancel your appointment. You ain't doing any harm by getting it checked. But if you don't and get a gas refill and then the guys tell you something else is wrong then you just wasted all the cash for nothing.

Air con compressor is (normally) belt driven. Check the belt. Then check the AC Clutch. Also check your fuses. Halfords know jack shit about cars in general.

thank you!!!
I took my 2004 Saab to Halfords Bromsgrove tonight. Free check proved it was 1/4 full, but I knew it needed topping up as there was no cold air coming through the vents. All done in 20 minutes. There was no fault finding, as this is done by the weFit staff in the store NOT the autocentres.

I give this heat (along with cold air in my car )
