Any idea if Quidco/TCB £5 applies as there is technically 0.00 paid for the handset. Just the top up. My kid needs a basic phone for dark nights after school clubs and I'm not an iPhone parent.

Just posted a basic non smartphone Alcatel for o2 FREE with £10 top up maybe that’s better, no idea about £5 Cashback though - someone else might

Yeah. I think this would be better as at least he'll feel like he's less embarrassed to remove it from his pocket. I'm not an iPhone parent but he's an iPhone kid!! Still £15 to break it is better than £300 till he can be trusted. Cashback tracks. Just not sure if it will actually pay out. Used it with the extra £2.50 from Quidco at the moment so potentially £7.50 for the phone and a £15 credit pack.

My mum bought this phone - It's shockingly bad. It resembles a childs toy in both how it feels in the hand and it's useability. It's slow to do anything (even open a txt message). I wouldn't strongly recommend looking at something else. Also, at 3.5" it's well below par for being a smart phone.

It’s Free and a great mobile hotspot device

Also it’s your duty as ‘child’ to start buying their phones (etc) when the time comes, easily throw £50-£100 quid at it for them for a decent phone like any good wo/man does - so it’s your fault she overpaid for a basic mobile #proactive

I bought one on a similar deal in summer just wanted a cheapo phone for son to lose/break when he went camping, yes it was free but found it to be just about unusable, awful display and really slow, managed to get about a fiver on eBay for it, so yes I'd agree if you want a free basic phone just to be able to keep in touch I'd go for the "dumb" phone deal instead.

I agree, this will do a hotspot but the ‘candy bar’/‘feature phone’ Alcatel defo will run a lot smoother than Android on such a basic spec.

i wouldn't even say this phone is functional, tbh.

it's not for anything other than texting or phone calls, at which point you might aswell get a brick

A brick can’t connect you to 999 #justsaying and a first basic phone for kids is perfect, throw in a 1pmobile sim, a £10 40GB Virgin or a o2 5p Classic sim, even a Vodafone £1 a day 500MB/unlimited calls and texts

personally £1 a day on Vodafone maybe expensive but isn’t every kid worth £365 a year - Child Benefit subsidises it plus extra.

Vodafone Unlimited payg capped at £1 a day vodafone.co.uk/sho…o1/

It’s basic phone but it’s security.

oh trust me, we had that discussion...considering I work in IT and am into my tech I know a fair few things about mobile phones....but no, she thought she'd wander off down to the local mobile phone shop and ask an "expert" (pronounced "idiot") who sold her this door-stop!

That’s what I said, you deliver a decent FREE mobile before it’s needed, none of this ‘talk’ malarkey or idiots in shops the fact you work in IT shames you she doesn’t have a decent free mobile in hand and has to entrust idiots

my old man has a decent spec mobile - Lumia 550 because it’s way easier to see the icons over iOS or Android, I replaced it last year as soon as soon as the old Lumia started playing up and a master reset didn’t work #proactive

”Hi Dad, there’s a new phone, Microsoft too so easy to use as like last one, I’ll transfer everything across for you ok”
jobs a good ane!

You're preeching to the choir - I offered to buy her a decent phone for FREE with a sensible sized screen she could read...I was told "what do I need with a phone like that" - then she gets sold one but thinks it's something different because it's cheaper and smaller.

Generational-hurdle unfortunately - 3 years on and I'm still trying to get her to drop "The" from "The Facebook"

On the upside, I did just install an unsolicited Amazon Dot in her lounge this weekend which resulted in the usual "why do I need that thing" response - then I called her from my house and she was amazed she didn't have to touch anything and just how clear the audio was - she's now a convert

You don’t offer fool, you deliver lol

The phone has taught you well young one - buy Dot, deliver, install, convert!

I bought a bluetooth speaker and old man loves streaming internet radio in kitchen, he never would have bought one though, he wouldn’t be without now lol

bought him his first computer, mobile etc etc, I started young, you have to or the oldies get lost in it all ‘I dunno be needing that’ - when you pay/deliver/set up they embrace (as they know we work hard for the money simple

Im not even on The Facebook but old man is I like technology, but I also like real friends

It is a shockingly awful phone. I will be buying one to use as the trade-in for the Alcatel cashback offer! hotukdeals.com/dea…705

Ugh horrible phone. I don't have a problem with cheap phones but this is unusably bad.

I've heard that before but for me I'd rather not... you have to keep it charged and its battery level meter is totally bizarre, I think they made it logarithmic for a joke, plus it's bigger and slower to boot up than a mifi.
To each their own though.

For us it's like the top gear reserve car if we break a phone, I've never taken such care of my phones...

Now, I have a pixi 4 6" and that's actually pretty decent. Massive screen for emulators and actually responds when you press the screen.

As if, sending back one of their own lol it’s always a way to get a trade in deal to work, they always pay out on loyalty

Any way the top up can be to an existing PAYG sim card instead of a new one?

Not as such but put the £15 SIM in an old phone (with the data turned off) and immediately send a text to 150 with STOP PACK as the message then reply to the confirmation message. Next, phone EE from your main EE mobile phone and explain that you bought a new phone which came with a compulsory top-up but the store made a mistake and put the credit on a new SIM instead of crediting it to your number and can they fix it? It nearly always works!

Failing that there's always this to use up the credit.

Seems the catch with this phone being free is that (with o2) they try to take 15 pounds each subsequent month (as they have your payment details) unless you jump through hoops to stop payment. Anyone who recently purchased got info to the contrary?. Only need the payg aspects until santa been and get a better phone and appropriate tariff.
