Anyone managed to get rid of Garageband completely? It still takes up 2GB of storage space, despite uninstalling 4 times and deleting the application root folder! ... it reminds me of the AOL days when you installed the spam on the CD in order to get free dial-up for a month and then could never get rid of the stuff!

Added heat as good for people who don't know about it.

Thanks for the heads up

Oooh! The appstore app is also free!

Hmmm.. Never realised these were ever paid for.

Not for all imacs. Slightly older ones didn't get them for free. Had to pay £19.99 like the OP says.

Heat added. Thank you.

I wiped my mac then reinstalled Sierra and it was gone. Not why I did it but a welcome bonus

They've been free since September 2013 but only with new hardware purchases though

I'm guessing what's left over are the samples and/or loops it downloads. They're stored in a different location in case you reinstall (so you don't have to redownload large files)

I already own them, I want to uninstall them, then DL them again, for free.

Love garageband and taught myself how to play a techno version of the ever so popular 'Shaddap ya face - Joe Dolce' just downloading Keynote now...have some heat OP.

Well, this is very helpful actually!

These apps used to all be free. Until Apple decided to charge for them recently. (Meaning if you install a fresh copy of let's say; El Capitan, you'd notice that these applications aren't included.

Good find!

And there was me stupidly thinking, FREE Apple Devices?. :-(

Hehehehehe, oh well?, lol. ;-)

They're all rated horribly

Can I use Garageband on my iPhone 4?

Thanks

Thanks OP. I have an early 2013 MBP Retina 15" and did not have any of these Apps. Have some well deserved heat!

Yes, I'd stick to Google Suite and not bother with Apple's apps.

meh
I have office

They have been free for years for anyone who buys a new Apple Mac or iOS device

Already on my iPhone SE?

Always been free as far as I can recall.

But if you bought your device before September 2013 you had to pay for it! So good for people who have older machines that don't want to or need to upgrade.

They were only free for the original purchaser of the mac. If you then wiped it and used a different account, you wouldn't have access to the apps anymore.

I just bought garageband last week on Mac

can I get these apps and not download them for now? don't need some of them but just incase they start charging for them again.

Apple won't start charging for the apps. This is a permanent price change. From now on they will always be free.

Cheers big ears. Heat added.

Great to see them go free. I much prefer Pages and Numbers to Word and Excel.

Why do you say that designaw? They get such bad reviews. Just curious.

I find the interface clearer and simpler to use and less cluttered and complex than Word and Excel. I've done a lot of complex layout projects on Word for clients and it is appalling, so many bugs with styles and so unreliable. I do my accounts with Numbers and it does everything I want it a much simpler and attractive manner. I do my own work on Pages and Numbers and client work in Word and Excel when I have too. I'm haven't read the reviews but I used Apple Works in the old days and the new apps are a great improvement and ideal for anyone looking for a suite with much of Office's functionality and compatibility but with a more polished and considered interface that feels like a made for Mac application rather than a port from Windows.

Thank you very much for your explanation. I really appreciate that.
