Found 21st Apr 2015
WhatsApp Calling is now Offically available for iOS devices.

The latest version of WhatsApp for iPhone adds a new voice calling feature that allows you to talk to any WhatsApp user around the world for free. Similar to Skype or FaceTime Audio, WhatsApp Calling uses an Internet connection (VoIP) rather than cellular phone service to make calls.

Just head over to iTunes and update the app!

so Viber then?

no whatsapp if you look in the app it now as a telephone icon when your in a chat with someone

tried this feature, it was really lagging with moto g 2gen! anyone else ha any problems???

Although the latest update States it has the feature, they also say that they're slowly rolling out the feature for IOS. When I checked last night, it wasn't working for me.

This is the end for calling plans with mobile carriers. Watch them all start to offer cheaper call plans now as people will use the call feature on WiFi or with their data plans. This will cost the phone companies a lot of money, but it's about time we all got cheaper deals.

Heat from me as I can finally talk to the iOS users from my Android.

sweet i thought, i tapped on the call button and after the call ended i realised it just did a normal phone call using my monthly sim. wtf? thought it was wifi calling?

Who were you trying to call? Does the other person not have Whatsapp with calling feature?

It doesn't take over your entire phoning options it's essentially skype or viber you can only call for free over data if the other person has the app/feature

It was hit and miss for me- yesterday managed to make call after two attempts. sound quality was good and spoke for approx 10 minutes.
really looking forward to using this more as it gets more established.

so Viber then?

Yeah, but people actually use this and don't have to be told what viber is

Can you not just type in their digits and phone them? Old school of know...

how do you call? when i try to call it uses my minutes

I don't think everyone has it yet - even if it updates.

Telecoms stopped making money from call allowances years ago. Data is where we get hit hard.

Despite the release notes saying whatspp calling is available It has not been activated by whatsapp just yet the feature will start to be enabled over the coming weeks. I updated a few days ago and have tried a few times to make whatsapp calls, but they are just routing to regular voice calls at the moment. A little patirnce and the facility be available soon enough. Heat added OP.:{

On Windows phone by 2018?

Ive had this on my android for a few weeks now, I could call friends on ios but they couldnt call me on it. but most have been getting the update, and its working for them. heat!

on my acer android phone recently. i have used it many times, both to android and iphone users. no issue.

I've been calling via app for number of years through similar apps like LINE/WeChat ...not sure why this takes so long for Whatsapp to implements...

At least I can delete apps like Line now. Apps that spam me almost daily with some "fun" message. Yes Line, I'm looking at you.

They took a while to implement it but I guess a lot of these guys eventually try to swallow up the other app developers and incorporate their features. Similarly Instagram brought out Layout, so I deleted Diptic as Layout worked better for me. Not surprising they wanted to do this.

Tried it yesterday and it worked well when it eventually called. Kept bouncing back to the text box when I hit call. Until the other person called me and then it was sweet.

Please correct me if I am wrong. Wechat is pretty good and can send record messages, while Whatsapp is not exactly free (the first year is free and then it is $0.99 per year or something), so I am not entirely sure why so many people use Whatsapp...

Tbf, I think they saw this coming. Google voice was pretty big in the US at one time. Virgin have this little app that allows you to use your minutes from your Virgin landline too if you have that too!

I also use apps like CSIPSimple or Zoiper in order to ring 0800 numbers, 0845 numbers over Wifi etc...

+1

Whatsapp is ace, but I prefer Google Hangouts when calling with VOIP. Worked well when my other half was in the states!

Does it work ok on iphone 4, anyone?

its free on android too

Probably because 79p a year isn't exactly going to break anyone's back.

I don't think I've ever paid (iOS)

Free Calling via WhatsApp(i.e. faceboook) is good
but the trade off is they collect/record all your calls/msgs/photos(forever!) and use the data as they wish
and the app has access to your phone contacts/texts/camera/photo at anytime(not just when using the actual app) etc
but you must know this already?

Good for you. Although you have paid extra for Apple's proprietary software and...well that's about it - seeing as Samsung design and make most of Apple's parts - including those lovely retina screens. But hey, at least you saved 79p in a year, eh. X)

I have the icon of a telephone on my whatsapp. So if not connected to internet/wifi calls will go through as normal calls. but if connected to internet, they are free?. i think i've said that right.

Absolute rubbish... just use facetime without the spam!!! oO

I was just saying I haven't paid. I wasn't making an Apple vs Samsung statement. Get over it.

This is a freebie?

Surely that's only of any use if every single person you want to chat to also uses an apple device?

I use both whatsapp and viber, and I believe viber to be superior and more innovative, but as said earlier, you have to tell people about viber. (_;)

Same here.
When I tried it a few times it was taking a while for my voice to reach the op and vice versa. Very poor.
