No one likes a massive phone bill: whether you’re calling abroad to speak to your folks or running over your monthly minutes, a hefty dent in your wallet is not what you want. Now Virgin Media’s here to lend a helping hand with its new SmartCall smartphone app, which will let you use your home phone plan over any wireless network to make free calls on the go, meaning you won’t be surprised with any massive bills! Read on for all the details!

Mobiles have taken over as the main phone of choice for lots of people, but if you still have a home phone, you might not be using its plan to the full extent, leaving those precious minutes you’re paying for unused – which is where SmartCall steps in. If you’re a current Virgin Media home phone customer, you’ll be able to use the app to make calls straight from your smartphone – over a Wi-Fi connection – absolutely anywhere in the world, and all it uses is your inclusive minutes on your landline package, meaning you can stop paying extra for all those cross network minutes.

Whether you’re toting an Android blower or an iPhone, you’ll be able to download the app and dial away from any Wi-Fi connection, no matter where you are in the world and regardless of what mobile network you’re signed up with. It’s also able to detect which time zone you’re in when you’re abroad and whether or not the call is still free to make, and as it only works over Wi-Fi, you won’t be surprised with any bills when you jet back home unlike BT’s rival service SmartTalk, which does allow you to go over your allowance. You’ll also be saving money on calls to other landlines, mobiles, premium 0845/70 numbers, directory enquiries, and even when abroad, as you won’t have to dip into your mobile plan.

Android’s invading your landline thanks to Panasonic!

It’s a free service for Virgin Media customers, but it only really comes in handy depending on what kind of talk plan you have. The Talk Weekends (M) plan, for example, which is no extra cost on top of the £14.99 a month line rental, grants you unlimited calls to UK landlines, Virgin mobiles and 0870 numbers, but only at weekends, while if you splurge for the Talk Unlimited Extra (XXL) package, which is an extra £15 a month, you’ll be granted unlimited calls to UK landlines, all UK mobiles, 0870 and 0845 numbers at any time.

Do you think Virgin’s SmartCall app is a winner, or are you enrolled with BT’s SmartTalk service instead? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

To be fair this has been out since october of last year, Just thought i'd put it back out there as its saved me a small fortune whilst using my phone whilst abroad

I'm a regular on this site and a Virgin custumer and hadn't previously known about/noticed this, so heat from me.

Shame can't be used on 3G

Ditto

I've never heard of this! Heat from me

used this from Egypt a couple of weeks ago with a mifi unit and works very well.

As mentioned already posted on here, however I don't think it went hot at the time, only appeared on the "new deals" page.... not "hot page" maybe why a few people didn't see it.

Always good to have a repost now and then as not everyone catches everything.

Nor me

Guessing people didn't see it as it was previously in Freebies which is where this should be.
Has been available for quite a while and posted on here a few times.

Spotted this last time it was on here, Cant recommend it enough if your a VM customer (i'm not tho!), My Parents go to spain for 7 months a year and are now saving a good £40 a month... even taking in to account the fact they are paying for the VM line in the UK when they aren't there!!

Thanks first i have heard of this.

Great facility.

Those on O2 get a similar facility which uses your mobile phone minutes...

from home wifi can you call all the countries ?

Yes

I must check to see if they have updated this app installed on my phone January to use while in Benidorm it kept asking me to register the phone googled and found to be a common fault and with the usual lack of Virgin response to correct and up date.
It proved to be a right lemon not tried to use it since.

The connection via the app is crap though with perfect wifi and broadband, don't expect landline quality calls.

Depending on your calls package and who you're calling, it's not necessarily free.

I've been using this since launch day and had no problems with quality of calls. It's also a useful alternative way of using your mobile to call 0800 numbers.

Does Viber not do exactly the same, calls over internet/WiFi? Facebook have said the intend providing same thing with WhatsApp too, my money will be on it being better than VM offering.

Agreed. I tried to use it Spain 2 weeks ago, gave up and went back to skype to landline as the call quality was so poor. Just the sort of good idea but poor implementation that I'd expect from V.M. (Tivo - good idea, dreadful box, Super Hub - good idea, dreadful box.....)

I've been using the MobileVoIP app combined with a nonoh.net account for years to make calls - especially when I'm abroad and using wifi or when I'm calling an international or non-geographic number. Works nicely and is probably cheaper than the VM landline plans (I do have a VM landline, but I don't use it enough to warrant having a plan).

Thanks I didn't know about this.

Not totally correct, it will only allow calls that are included on your plan whilst using from home or abroad. The real benefit is when you are on holiday and have WI FI you can phone any landline in the UK for free if your plan has free landline calls included. I have free landline calls 24/7 included so when I am on holiday I an call home when ever I like and talk for a maximum of 60 minuets. You do need a decent WI FI connection which is not always possible in some countries.

I have a talk weekend plan .. how will it work for me? Does it mean that I can call outside UK only over the weekend? thanks

I used this when I was at Centerparcs last and it worked brilliantly. My regular mobile signal was rubbish around the park but as we had WiFi access in the Villa and in the centre it was really useful when we had to ring family. The sound quality was very good and it worked everytime. Worth installing and setting up.

Yes, you can do the same thing using Viber Out - and also with Skype and probably loads of other apps. Don't know how Viber and Skype's rates compare with VM - guess it depends on what landline plan you have. As I mentioned earlier, personally I like MobileVoIP as it's cheap. Android phones with reasonably recent versions of Android also have native Internet call functionality built in (for which you'll need an account with a SIP provider such as SIPGate or LocalPhone). Open the Call app, click on "Settings", then scroll down to "Internet Call Settings". Not a good option for the non-tech-savvy though.

What a load of rubbish. Are you being paid by BT to say this?

I've used the service it's good , but you need good connection

Never heard of this, looks good to me.

If the call your making is to a number that's not included in your call package, you won't be able to make the call, also it won't allow you to talk for more than 60 mins.

As a result, you would never run up any call charges by using this.

You're right, I'm wrong.

Rubbish!

Most minutes mobiles cross network anyway

Thank You

Sorry am i being stupid here

"Whether you’re toting an Android blower or an iPhone, you’ll be able to download the app and dial away from any Wi-Fi connection, no matter where you are in the world and regardless of what mobile network you’re signed up with"

Am i bit confused above statement

nice 1 thanx. just set it all up.

Do you still pay the same connection charge for each call that you would incur if you were phoning from your home phone?
