Free coffee at Metro Bank - £3 in your account for free

**Unfortunately their branches are in and around London only at the moment, so only any good if you can get to one...sorry!**

I opened an account at Metro Bank as they don't charge for overseas/foreign currency transactions on their debit card.

The card was printed in store and they give you £3 to buy a coffee to try out the contactless payment!

how far away from london do you count as 'around london'?
I live like a hour drive(down the m4) into central london, outside of the m25 circular and have a metro open recently in my town.

Due to an itchy trigger finger I spammed my own post when trying to report a request forit to be moved to the Freebies section. Could a mod move it to the right place please, thanks! :o)

Thanks for sharing, I've moved this to freebies for you

It would take a lot more than £3 to persuade me to stay with Metro Bank. The 'shops' are nice, the no-charge cash withdrawals overseas are good, but the rest of it's pretty rubbish.

The online banking's truly dreadful, as is the telephone support when it goes wrong. Faster Payments take far longer to arrive than most other banks, too.

I use it now solely for the overseas cash withdrawals. Nothing else seems fully functional.

i wonder if i actually exist now , last time i tried to open one desite all my proof passport proof of address the computer didnt believe i existed

Just checked ... computer says NO.

Anyone know if they charge for foreign transfers in sterling to accounts in Kenya for example?

Just to thoroughly recommend this bank: free from overseas atm charges is rare. Staff are great. They have a good culture there. I love their cherry lollies (!) and that they allow dogs in. You don't need to live in London to open an account ie you can if you're visiting pop into a branch and do it without an appointment. And open 7 days a week.

I moved from Natwest to Metro...just before Natwest had their computer screw ups.....I have found them to be very good on the telephone never had a problem or long wait to get through...also a bonus is they have an 02 number to call so I can use my mobile minutes to call IF I ever need to.

Have lost my card twice and being able to get a replacement instore is great. The longer opening hours very handy and 7 days a week. Never had an issue with faster payments...may take longer than other banks but is THAT really that important for personal accounts.

Granted their website and online banking is bloody awful to look at but it functions well enough.

I agree. Online banking is so so but I've never had a problem with their telephone service and always use my card when I'm abroad. I get better rates than my Dad does with HSBC Premier.

Anyone considering opening an account with Metro might want to read some of the posts on this MSE thread. Some people quite happy, but an increasing number (including one previously avid supporter who totally changed his view when things started to go wrong) very unhappy:

I'd rank it alongside Santander, which isn't saying much!
