Saw this in Westfield Shepherds Bush yesterday - starbucks giving away free coffee grounds for your garden.

Great for healthy plants apparently!

Starbucks have been doing this for years, my vegetables get their soil covered as it is a gppd deterrent for slugs and snails, if they don't have any on show they will normally bag it up for you too!

Can this be added to compost at all?
Heat given for bringing this to everyone's attention.

......or if you're really cheap you can try and squeeze an extra cup outta them oO

free rubbish Yay

Coffee grounds can be an excellent addition to a compost pile. The grounds are relatively rich in nitrogen see http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/07/080707171641.htm

Starbucks have been doing this for a long time, just ask in store and most are more than willing to give away their commercial waste lol

Its certainly made my lettuce blossom

also makes great shower scrub for your skin (I'm such a cheapskate, lol)

Also if you dont want cats in your flower beds they do not like the smell of coffee so this will help. They also dont like lemon so planting lemon grass will also deter them

I think most stores inc Costa will do this if you ask, but always good to get a reminder so thanks OP

If I'm correct coffee grounds are best used for plants that like acid?

Coffee grounds will make pink hydrangeas blossom in blue.

They do this at most stores I've been in.
Heat added.

Thanks - Didn't know Starbucks done that. Heat added

Starbucks have been doing this for a long time - good reminder

not all.Starbucks are.doing this so you may need to ring up a couple of days in advance

You can also ask them to save the bog juice,Both products are great for the soil.
Bring a bucket

Just got back from my local Starbucks, they were more than happy to give it ...I've added some to my compost bin and I hope it turns out great.

probably a tax fiddle.

good find i think they do it so it saves going to landfill and also keeps costs down as you can think how much they must dump and they have to pay for that

Never knew they did this...great idea!

Thy fiddle their taxes and now they have found a way to evade having to pay for garbage collection by dumping it on their customers, knowing that those who are stupid enough to spend money with them are stupid enough to take their rubbish and be grateful for it.

Starbucks are just blood sucking leeches of society.

Depends where the store is. And the manager... My local costa is in a large shopping centre, where their grind and food gets turned into water using some process down in the basement of the shipping centre o_0

Is it on display or do you have to ask? I have never noticed this before....

Every day is a school day.. this is new to me, although I do think its ridiculous to comment that its a way for them to be blood sucking leeches and avoid charges for industrial waste. They would be paying for the waste regardless, it's just unlikely that it would be recycled. For them to allow you to have it for the greater good of composting and recycling, I personally feel that's fantastic and they deserve kudos for that.

Anyways, thanks OP

I wouldn't be surprise if you didn't need a waste carriers license to transport them.

Couldn't have put it better myself .

Thanks for the heads up OP

I am totally shocked that the vile thrifty conglomerate doesn't charge for this!!!!!

Nobody should give these vile people a penny.

Starbucks has been offering this for years - every store has a seperate bin purely for coffee grounds - so if you ask nicely you could have a bin bag full.

Thanks for tip. Will get some when I am in town.:)

Not so,just taking advantage of incompetently written tax laws.blame parliament not those who interpret what they write.:-)

When I was a student I worked in Lewis's bistro on Saturdays. We sold Rombout's coffee, with the plastic drip filter that sits on top of the cup. I remember one day a customer saying she would keep hers as it would be handy to put a seedling in. I asked did she want more... She came back at 5.30pm to a black bag full of stacks of them Think that kept her in seedling pots for years.

The point of that was... if you know a cafe that uses them, just ask!
