Free EHIC card on the NHS

Found 18th May 2012
Just thought i would post this since a few of my friends have been paying third party websites and other places between £9.95 and £14.95 for one of these, they are actually free on the NHS

"The free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) entitles the holder to free or discounted medical treatment at state-run hospitals and GPs in any European Union country, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.

If you're in Europe and you've got an EHIC you’ll be entitled the same treatment that local citizens are entitled to, which is extremely useful in emergencies. It’s completely free and valid for five years. All UK residents are eligible, residents of the Channel Islands and Isle of Man aren't."

did a quick search and couldn't find it, but it's always worth a friendly reminder. Stop people paying these third party sites money just so they can forward your details for free to this site.

ive not long ago signed up for one of these as my son needs it for when he goes to germany! i didnt even have a clue u could get one till his old teacher mentioned it! it even states on the nhs site its free wich comes up when u google ehic card so ur mates shud have looked there first maybe lol its good that u have posted it on here tho just incase others dont know about it or where to look voted hot!

I only looked because my gf had said she paid £9.95 for one the last time she went on holiday and it's expired now and she was needing a new one, then i decided to go looking to see the cheapest and i found the NHS site saying it was free

Thanks, mine run out in 10/2010 - renewed online, took 5 mins max!

My god, I can't believe people have actually paid for these?!?!? oO

When ours ran out the sites that I googled cane up with charges so I rang up and then found as you say it's free, that's a really nasty trick these sites are playing

how long is this card valid for?

5 Years

you can get the form from the post office

Never paid for them.

good post, I noticed this last year when I renewed. The top search results come back as ones you have to pay for, but all they do is take your money and your details and fill in the form for you. Its a scam. I used the original NHS free service after a bit of a look but it wasnt obvious

Good public service post.

Lost mine somewhere. Will get another one. Thanks

Don't know what other sites there are but the top paid for google hit has this on their site applyehic.org/leg…tml and applyehic.org/our…tml

I don't agree with their service but at least they are honest and perhaps people who can't read need a service like this...

This is not a hot deal at all. They are and have always been free.

great

This card is always free. Its just a shame some people go through pay websites to obtain it.

These are handy in an emergency but dont rely solely on them. Tried to use my sons when he got an ear infection in Tenerife a few years ago, had to travel miles to a hospital, had to wait 4 hours only to be told when our ticket number came up that no consultation could be started until we provided a translator.NEXT.

worth having you never now might win a holiday in Spain. now i am covered

thanks man

I am not saying they have never been free, this was more just an information post for people who thought you had to pay for the card, or have never been abroad (like me) and didn't know where to apply for one.

Thanks for the post. I was about to pay £14.99 for this JUST last night.

These are only useful as long as the NHS is still around.. The clock is ticking

these used to know as the E111

thanks

Bargain

Thank you

A question from who had them;I applied as a main applicant and gave details for my husband and daughters so will we be getting one for each person or one for the full family?

Heat btw

I knew they were free, but i'd completely forgotten to get meself one, so, ta very much, for the reminder.

The heat is on....

Didn't realise people had been paying for these, we've always got ours for free. I think people need to do more research when buying things off the internet!
