FREE EHIC : European Health Insurance Card

Found 22nd Apr 2015
With the holiday season approaching and these taking a few weeks to arrive, I thought it may be helpful to post a reminder about the EHIC card as the last post was around 18 months ago.... Also around this time websites that actually charge for this freebie start advertising heavily and I wouldn't like to see anyone caught out...

Some info :

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) replaced the old E111 in 2006. Your EHIC lets you get state healthcare at a reduced cost or sometimes for free. It will cover you for treatment that is needed to allow you to continue your stay until your planned return. It also covers you for treatment of pre-existing medical conditions and for routine maternity care, as long as you're not going abroad to give birth.

Important
The EHIC replaced the old E111 in 2006. The card is not an alternative to travel insurance. It will not cover any private medical healthcare or costs such as mountain rescue in ski resorts, being flown back to the UK, or lost or stolen property. Therefore, it is important to have both an EHIC and a valid private travel insurance policy. Some insurers now insist you hold an EHIC and many will waive the excess if you have one.

Basically it costs nothing except time and although you obviously hope you don't need it while you're away this summer, it makes sense to have one.

This is not a deal. It's always been free....

Should this not be in 'freebies'?

I think it's like anything else really BB, the amount of people who pay for companies to claim their PPI back is staggering, when you can cut out the middle man and do it yourself for free. The other thing (for me anyway) is that this isn't the kind of thing I would see from one year to the next, so just a reminder if you have one to check it's in date really and have time to apply for a new one.

I had one of these when I was aborad and at the emergenncy they told me that it is not useful.

It is probably also worth mentioning that they are only valid for 5 years. So there will be some people that think they have one but actually don't and need to renew it.

They are meant to accept them anywhere in the EU. What country did you visit?

Good post. I think it is a kind of deal as some folks are daft enough to pay for it. I'll add some heat although technically it should be in freebies. I never look I'm freebies though.

Great post, thank you.
Hot;)

I checked and notice mine had expired.
So I did a Google search to see about renewing it....
BEWARE,
ALL the hits on Google ended up being on sites who charge.
The one I went down I ASSUMED was the official Gov site, and looked VERY official, and I was happily proceeding along to RENEW my EHIC when it started mentioning a cost.
Alarm bells started ringing and I checked out MSE and Martin Lewis has a whole section covering this topic.

I followed the links on MSE and got to the GENUINE official site, and renewed my card (now received) at no cost.

So, if I had been a little less wary (and tight) I too may have ended up paying for this....
After all, a lot of services which we have taken for granted as being FREE, this Government is now expecting users to pay for...... for example a lot of the services which Social Services provided to the elderly and disabled etc.either no longer exist or are charged for.
So to be told we have to pay for EHICs would not bee completely unbelieveable.

Lol.

This isn't really a 'freebie' is it. It's not as if they are giving something away specially that you'd normally pay for.

After the application I receive an e-mail to pay £25?
Did anyone else get this?

Looks like you didn't use the official UK Gov site, but a scam site

Every tax payers' paid government run service is free, except those that you pay again, lol.

^^^^ Yes you are still.:)

I had one about ten years ago but I see that now it says you have to be of a eu nationality, shouldn't it be based on the fact that I pay hundreds of pounds to the NHS every year?
I see the Dr about once every couple of years, so good to see I'm getting value for money.

I have misplaced/lost my card and the website tells you to send an email so I did and never even got a response.

You clearly misunderstand what this section is for. There are very few freebies that are items/services that you normally pay for. This is free and is therefore a freebie. There is no requirement for it to have a price that you would normally be charged.

Many people assume an EHIC card entitles you to free treatment.
It doesn't.
It entitles you to the same access to state medicine as the national of the country you are in.
If that means you pay, then you pay.
Even if treatment is free you may be required to pay then reclaim on your return to the UK. I have had to do this in France. One further point is that in countries like Spain the EHIC card is not recognised in the many private hospitals there.XFQL-NCJ6RA-6GB8UQ

I think its already posted but got expired by mistake but heat from me

Well ok then, by using your logic then why not post up 'Doctor's Appointments' up in Freebies. Hey everyone, if you phone up your Doctor's surgery you can make a FREE appointment?

How about 'Free School Places'? Just to let everyone know that if you apply with the local education authority for a school place for your child you can receive one place per child ABSOLUTELY FREE if you fall within the catchment area and they have an available place?

Why stop there, how about a thread entitled 'Free Election Vote' letting people know that if they are on the electoral list they can visit their local Polling Station on the 7th of May 2015 they can receive ONE FREE VOTE PER PERSON.
