FREE EHIC : European Health Insurance Card

With the holiday season approaching and these taking a few weeks to arrive, I thought it may be helpful to post a reminder about the EHIC card as the last post was around 18 months ago.... Also around this time websites that actually charge for this freebie start advertising heavily and I wouldn't like to see anyone caught out...

Some info :

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) replaced the old E111 in 2006. Your EHIC lets you get state healthcare at a reduced cost or sometimes for free. It will cover you for treatment that is needed to allow you to continue your stay until your planned return. It also covers you for treatment of pre-existing medical conditions and for routine maternity care, as long as you're not going abroad to give birth.

Important
The EHIC replaced the old E111 in 2006. The card is not an alternative to travel insurance. It will not cover any private medical healthcare or costs such as mountain rescue in ski resorts, being flown back to the UK, or lost or stolen property. Therefore, it is important to have both an EHIC and a valid private travel insurance policy. Some insurers now insist you hold an EHIC and many will waive the excess if you have one.

Basically it costs nothing except time and although you obviously hope you don't need it while you're away this summer, it makes sense to have one.

credit to OP karri123 I pinched it but pls get your EHIC card

But whilst I give full credit to Op, it's more important that people get the card.

You think it's more important to pen a few personal words or to get the EHIC card?

Thank you for posting just filled in the application forms in online only took a few mins

Better to post it in here from time to time than let people do this via those websites you got first when you'll put EHIC in google. Some time ago you could see 2 or 3 websites with charges for applying coming as first results after searching. Same with provisional licence. Twice the shame because first you're paying for something what is free of charge ad second they're selling your details to god knows who.

Just done, only took a few minutes thankyou

Thanks for the reminder, always forget about this - heat.

Very important! I had to go to hospital with Salmonella while I was in Poland a few years back and didn't have this card. This meant I had to pay fairly hefty hospital charges at the time.. I managed to claim them back when I arrived back in the UK thankfully but it took a fair amount of time!

just remember folks, this card has always been free to get. avoid any websites charging a fee to send ur application.

I Google and got to a page where you have to pay. they say at the end of the application. rip off when this is free.

I did that a few days ago. then I searched on hukd and saw a free one. people must fall for this.

Yeah I've got this card too.... It'd be silly not to!

Anyone know the answer to this - are people in (or from) other EU countries able to get one of these for using when in this country - and if so, what use would it have?

The EHIC card entitles visitors to a country the same healthcare coverage available to citizens of that country, so presumably hospital stays, operations etc, in NHS hospitals won't be chargeable.

Cheers ampdewd, and OP

I became ill with a bag migraine last year in Majorca, had the doc out, had an injection and tablets, handed this card to him and he said straight up 'No No' cash only!!!!!! i dot accept this card?

Hotels and tour guides have a "habit" of calling private doctors. They aren't covered by the Spanish Health System (or your EHIC) in the same way a private doctor in the UK would not be covered by the NHS. You will have to specifically ask them to call you a public healthcare doctor.

Worth checking with your travel insurance whether they will cover the bill.

I got a bit of the old " VD " and i had to pay - the docs said i not covered with this card for the clymidia

Thanks for reminding that my card needs to be renewed! Heat added

You might have had a case of the old clap my son but you should have asked for a public doctor not a 'privates' one lol

Timely reminder for me, thank you!

its ALWAYS been free!

No one is disputing that here, just reminding people.

I'm due to go to Denmark in a couple of weeks but am having problems with my heart and awaiting various tests. My friend in Denmark asked her doctor what would happen if I was taken ill out there and was told to simply ring the surgery and someone would come out immediately or alternatively ring for an ambulance to take me to hospital. I would not be charged for whatever was necessary,

Off to Amsterdam next month, think I definitely need this. Thanks OP!

Thanks. Hopefully will never need it, and not sure it will be readily accepted, but better to have it just in case.

You need the EHIC card, my friend

I've had one for some time and it doesn't expire until next year, but luckilly I've never had to use it so far.

Don't like the way you spell luckily

I do apologise if I have transgressed and not come up to your exacting standards on this occasion Bob. The appalling spelling and grammar of quite a few posters frequently surprises me, as does the rudeness of those who take it upon themselves to correct them, in the unfulfilled hope of making themselves appear superior.
