I posted this around the same time last year but thought it worth sharing again since they are amazing places that do some great work, Feb half term / Easter holidays are approaching & I LOVE Donkey's!

Free Entry to ALL Sites (though donations are welcome & 83p in every £1 donated goes directly on donkey welfare & care) - the main site at Sidmouth has over 500 donkeys, is open 365 days per year, has farm trails that are bike friendly, a maze & outdoor playcentre, woods, nature centre & dogs are welcome on leads.

Come and see the donkeys and mules in our care at the heart of The Donkey Sanctuary near Sidmouth. Grazing in the paddocks, you'll find residents from gentle giant Poitou donkeys to adorable miniatures, and our gorgeous adoption donkeys. Meet more friendly characters in the main yard, and a warm welcome awaits you at The Kitchen restaurant, Gift Shop and Visitor Centre, where you can learn more about our animal welfare work both in the UK and overseas.

You can also meet the donkeys in our sanctuaries in Belfast, Birmingham, Ivybridge, Leeds and Manchester.

Our main sanctuary in Sidmouth remains open 365 days a year from 9am until dusk.

Our sanctuaries in Birmingham, Belfast, Ivybridge, Leeds and Manchester are open:

  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday - 3pm to 5pm (last admission at 4.30pm at our Birmingham and Leeds sanctuaries)
  • Weekends and Bank Holidays - 10am to 3pm.
Please note these sanctuaries will be closed every Wednesday, the first Saturday of each month, and on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and Easter Sunday.

For further enquiries, please call:

  • Belfast - 028 9332 4647
  • Birmingham - 0121 354 9444
  • Ivybridge - 01752 690200
  • Leeds 0113 261 9249
  • Manchester - 0161 301 4051

May be worth checking for a more local donkey sanctuary as there are others out there too
Wish I lived closer...i would end up taking all the donkeys home!!

We go every year and its a fantastic place and great for a day out. Been places that charged £10pp and spent less time at them.
No donkey's in london.
Only £24 to adopt a Donkey for a year, surely we have all saved way more than that with our bargain hunting.
Im not funding manchester utd to buy any more they already have the belgium heskey and pogdonkey.
Not sure what it is about donkeys that people love. I remember talking to receptionist years ago at my dentist, the donkey sanctuary charity collection box she told me, collected twice the amount that the childrens charity box did.

Where are the poor work conditions and destitution that these donkeys are seeking sanctuary from ?
Is this free entry year round or just during Feb Half term?
They also run brilliant training and first aid courses for anyone lucky enough to own or look after donkeys.

They are really informative and give you helpful little tips.

Donkeys can be right stuborn when they want to be !

Many come from Ireland. Quite often they are abandoned after the gypsy children and teenagers have got bored with playing with them. When I say "play" this can be games such as seeing how much of a beating a donkey will take before it eventually tries to run away (where it will get punished again for being disobedient).
This is what one of the carers at the Donkey Sanctuary told me.
love the sidmouth one the walk round the outside is lovely lots of memorials for people who have donated

Nonsense, The Houses of Parliament are full of them,
Thank you, will look at the Sidmouth site.
What do donkeys get for lunch?

Half an hour!
What no jokes about plenty of ass available
I think the OP deserves a donkey for the services they have provided to this site. OP - have you considered crowdfunding? I think enough members would contribute and get a donkey delivered to you. A cheaper alternative is you could sponsor a donkey - that way you would at least receive regular letters and updates from your donkey. Also maybe you could have a donkey named after you? Wishihadadonkey would definitely be an edgy name for a donkey.

Families don't have to buy them as most are offered free to "good" homes, but they do abandon them after Christmas, or any other time of the year when they've got bored with them. Their value is so low that vets are rarely called out to them. They just get abandoned when unwell or need care such as hooves trimming.

You are right in suspecting they are shipped in from abroad (Ireland), but not to milk the public.
If it was to milk the public, they would have far fewer donkeys as people would still visit/donate and their expenses would be far less with less donkeys to feed, house and care for.

Just wondered as ive lived in the country all my life in an area where theres one of the highest concentrations of horses in the UK but rarely see donkies except for the ones at a donkey sanctuary upmthe road.
I see the donkey sanctuary took in 38million pounds in 2016 and epent 34 million, big numbers indeed.
