The eye test

An eye examination will normally take about 30 minutes and will include:

Preliminary checks or pre-screening
Discussion of ocular history and symptoms which include the following:

- Discussion of any symptoms you may have. This can help the Optometrist to work out what the cause of your eye problems may be.

- Discussion about your general health. It is useful to understand the state of your general health as this may affect your eyes.

- Discussion of any medication that you are taking. Some medications have side effects which can affect your eyes. If the optometrist knows what medication you are taking, they can look out for any adverse side effects.

- Discussion of your ocular history. It is useful to understand if any issues with your eyes or interesting features are longstanding or if they are of recent onset.

- Discussion of your family ocular and general health history. Signs of some general health conditions which run in families can be seen in the eyes and some ocular conditions can run in families.

- Discussion of any specific visual needs for example hobbies or occupational needs.

Our Optometrist will also want to know more about your lifestyle – such as what you do for a living and in your spare time. This additional information helps them to better understand your visual requirements and discuss the most appropriate options for you.

Examining your eyes

-Visual assessment i.e. how well you can see

-Eye movement and co-ordination checks

-Pupil assessment

-External and internal examination of the eyes to check that they are normal and healthy

-Refraction, i.e. to check if correction is required

-Other tests as necessary, e.g. repeat pressure tests, visual fields, colour vision

- Discussion of the findings of your eye examination including the state of the health of your eyes, if any correction would be beneficial and when your next routine eye test should be.

The Optometrist will also provide a copy of the results of the sight test – your spectacle prescription or a statement telling you that no prescription is required.

They don't tend to write it down

Had mine at specsavers. Optician was awesome lady and said i had really healthy eyes and long range. Thanks OP for posting eye tests, they can help so many people out and even they may find out about other health conditions. So respect that. Heat added.

Thanks not been for 5 years so helped me out just booked

I've been a couple of times and got my contact lenses from here too. They're pretty good although you're in and out in far less than 30 minutes but open late and at weekends. Pretty good for a routine check up but if you hadn't been for a while or you were worried I'm not sure I'd recommend.

I hadn't had an eye test since I was a child, had quite a lengthy appointment really happy with the service at my local store (Southport)

I had a decent eye test from Tesco in the past. My only issue was when I needed to replace a pair of glasses, I had lost my prescription and the store did not have an ophthalmologist on duty that day and would not have one available for a few days because of a bank holiday. Although the opticians in store were open they could not look at the computer and give me a copy. I had to go to boots and get my eyes retested so I could get some new glasses

Yes same here, I had mine done 2 weeks ago and they never wrote the PD down, but i just measured it myself, looking against a mirror with a ruler.
