Free film rentals (including UHD) from Rakuten for LG & Samsung TV owners

This deal is expired. Here are some options that might interest you:

Rakuten are currently offering a free UHD (also HDR) film rental when you register an account through their app on compatible LG TVs (also reported to be available on some Samsung models).

Provided you aren't already signed in you should see a promotional banner "Try UHD 4K on us" when you open the app. Select it, enter you details (yes, they take payment details ) and voila... one free UHD rental.

If you want to browse the selection first you can check the Rakuten website, or press green on your remote from the start page to skip registering. The UHD selection is ok, nothing special, but a free film is a free film.

However, there are two points that make this a much better deal:

  • Despite what the promotional message says, you aren't limited to the relatively small selection of UHD titles. Once registered all the rental titles show as £0.00
  • The promotion is tied to your account, not to your TV, so every time you register a new account through the WebOS app you get your "first" rental free. Simply go to settings within the app then select "Unpair account", then reregister.

To make that second point a little more convenient Rakuten allow you to delete your account via their website (sign in, go to settings, scroll to the bottom and click the delete link). You can then go straight back to the app on your TV and register a new account using the same email, password and payment details you just deleted. Rakuten don't validate your email before letting you watch, so you can just make up new email addresses; no need to delete the existing account.

Enjoy

If you delete account and reregister will your saved purchases still be in …If you delete account and reregister will your saved purchases still be in account?

No? When would that ever work in the world of digital purchase?

Might also be worth checking for this deal if you've got a recent 4K Samsung TV. The Rakuten app also supports UHD on that platform so they could be running the same promotion.

No, definitely don't delete an existing account with purchased content!
Where's the Samsung love
Sweet I’ve been loaned a LG tv to review so getting an extra free film rental is an added bonus.

No it's still a new account even if the details are the same. It just saves you having to come up with a new email (doubt they are checking your payment details are unique across accounts)

When you delete your account it specifically warns you that your content will be lost.
Ok not deleted anyway phew thanks
Great deal! It was a HD rental for 99p when I registered a few weeks back, so this is much better.

I've made a couple of purchases though, so I won't be deleting my account.
Come to think of it they never validated the email address when I registered, they just send a "Welcome to Rakuten" email... so you can probably just make up any old address each time and skip the part where you delete the previous account.
Worth noting that you only get 4 months to use these and the UHD selection is quite limited. I only ended up using about half the ones I got through the Samsung promotion before they expired.

Use as many emails as you want, it would appear.(angel)
Got a free uhd movie (black panther) on my Samsung 4K tv 50mu6120 Thanks OP
Thanks OP, great post and detail.
Hot for deal. Been hit and miss for me. Rakuten. Sometimes it streams great. Other times uhd films look at to hd at best. Not sure if it's my connection or rakuten it's self.

That's odd, I don't even see UHD as an option for black panther on my LG.
Thank you op..... I have samsung 4K TV and I registered and watching all the 4K movies for free right now.......

Because rakuten don't have it in UHD. the only source for digital 4k disney content in the UK is black panther on the microsoft store and it's £17.99
microsoft.com/en-…tab
Or physical and picking up a UHD Disc.

Once you rent you only have 48 hours... though you can watch as many times as you like in that time
Not working for me. Tried unpairing and re registering
Is this just one free rental or more than 1? Thanks

I've watched 4 or 5 in the last week. It is one per account, but as mentioned it is trivial to register new accounts because they aren't even validating email addresses.
Great deal and info,thankyou
Just tried it on an old Samsung smart TV, when I open the rakuten app it says register to get your first rental in hd for 99p

That's because no Marvel MCU / Disney films are available digital in the UK in UHD (aparently I missed the part where Black Panther is for some reason on Xbox ... quite odd)
They are in the US on a service called VUDU but you need a VPN to access it / credit card etc to purchase

I made it this far too...
Hasn't worked for me, the offered appeared to be there and I set up an account and went to register but it is trying to charge me for any movie I try.
Got modern 4K LG tv but 99p for HD rental. Nothing about free UHD rental.
Just tried on my Samsung KS series from 2016 and it has offered me a UHD rental for free. Thanks. Did not ask any card details but I had a old account
