Free Geographical telephone number @ Sipgate

Found 17th Feb
Get a free geographical telephone number (receiving calls) with an option to make calls if you top up credit. Many other features also available. Handy for those who don’t want to pay for landline and/or use it only for receiving calls. I’ve been using this service for over a year and didn’t pay a single penny. Use it with free ZOIPER app (WIN/iOS) to answer the calls.

Very good service, but it’s been free for many years, so this is nothing new. However, maybe useful to people who’ve not heard of it, or seen previous posts about it.

What's the difference between this app and apps like IMO,Viber,Whatsapp ? They all can make calls as long as you have internet connexion.

This one gives you a geographic LandLine number
" All you need is a broadband connection, a VoIP phone/adapter and your sipgate basic account - done! "

Do they have any phone app and/or Pc software?

Don’t think they’ve got their own app but you can use free third party app like ZOIPER on your mobile or PC or alternatively you can buy SIP phone or SIP gate to use it with.
Free voicemail to email etc. Good for retaining your landline number when moving house outside of the same exchange area, assuming the porting agreement is in place for the donor telco. Porting-in to Sipgate costs a one-off £30

I've been a customer for possibly a decade, having ported my virtual number from a similar service that closed.
Signed up always useful for a geographical number.
Thanks OP.
Been using them for some time. No much updates to their app though.

Don’t forget below for free international calls.

Yes its the easiest way to do it, I use Zoiper with it, only thing is you can't rely on it wholly to "stay awake" I mean the app has a mode to keep alive in the background but in general not sure how reliable that is as i try and call my own line to see if it rings, sometimes it just doesn't ring, or it takes about 10-15sec for it to actually start ringing etc, or even not ring at all, can't say if the problem is just me so once I figure out how to use the standalone device like vonage, might be a better solution.
Anyone have any experience of these guys?

I need to port over a business land line and these guys seem to do it by diverting direct to your mobile on a PAYG basis.
I've been using them for nearly 12 years and have had 6 localised numbers since the start. As you say, you can use the free version or there are a few options including PAYG and also for £9.99 a month, unlimited calls to landline and mobiles across the UK.
They are good, but be aware that they can pull the number if you don't use it for a while. I had 2 numbers with them and the second one got rarely used and they deleted it and someone else has it now. It didn't really matter to me but worth mentioning.
Their blurb says "calls from 0p per minute". Which calls are free in this service? Landline rates seem to be 1p/min and mobile 9p/min
???
Ive been using sipgate since 2008, saved a fortune on line rental

Calls to other sipgate numbers are free I think.

I've been using them for 12 years or so. I have a gigaset phone that acts just like a landline with this service (N300ip). Having voicemail emailed to you is a great perk and you can use your number from your mobile whenever you want aswell.
Looks very cool. :-)
I've had my local number since 2006 and been using with a Siemens Gigaset sipphone which I take with me every time I travel abroad. Its basically a roaming local number for free.
I only recently decided we don't need to waste money on the landline and am porting over our old number to Sipgate, good to see positive reviews.
Thanks for posting this

Expensive way of doing it for a business. Better off just getting yourself a decent hosted voice solution. Stuff I sell starts from £9 for a fully featured license.
Been on Sipgate for a number of years now, added credit to make some international calls, was cheaper than other options at the time. I found the Windows phone app doesn't work, but I have an old Android phone that works ok, but does disconnect quite frequently. They changed the account interface several times over the years, as sites do, and the older version was better.
My Linksys Voip box and my 1980s bt home phone does the job nicely, but now using whatsapp more to be honest.
This is a good service to get to weed out cold callers.

I've also been with Sipgate for many years and can recommend it. The service is SIP (hence the name!) so will work with practically any SIP VoIP kit or software/apps.

currently with virgin media with landline but thinking of jumping on this service(or similar). can I port my current landline number over to sipgate?

what else would I need to make this work? sipgate account? anyone recommend a landline style phone that would work with this service as don't want to rely on a app.

thanks

Yes you can port your number to sipgate. I’m using linksys pap2t voip gate and it works perfectly with this service. You can use your ordinary phone with this voip gate.
Definitely looking into this when my contract up for renewal with VM

Receiving calls is free, outgoing calls are charged (top up required). Calling the sipgate number is charged the same way as any other geographic numbers (as sipgate will allocate you standard geographic number with prefix 01, 02 or 03)

Yes should work with any normal handset if you get that adaptor thing.
Can you transfer your current landline number to this like you do with mobile phones using the puk or was it pad code?
I’ve never heard of this so thanks very much for sharing.
Does anyone know of any analogue to VOIP phone adapters that connect over WiFi instead of LAN?
