Just in the process of renewing our EHICs and I noticed there are a load of unscrupulous online middle men charging as much as £20 to facilitate this EHIC card - which DOES NOT need facilitating and is FREE through the NHS. So use my link.

Also, they have an app on how to use the European Health Insurance Card in the 27 EU countries, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway and Switzerland..

we had this a few years now, thanks for the reminder.
just checked it's valid for 5 years.

Yeah got mine back in 2001 and renewed. Noticed a lot of sites charging when i ordered my mums a few months ago, you really do need to be careful ( although in my experience no-one takes them anyway as they always send you to privste hospitalsm but i'd still rather have one with me than not)

Keep the thugs at bay, DIY.

same with visas say to Australia etc , their embassies will do for free online

another point is this. if you have an accident they will take you to a hospital of your choice provided you carry it with you otherwise they may take you to private hospital (ie the nearest) its ok for broken leg etc

also worth remembering also that if its life threatening the ambulance will take you to nearest hospital private or not and if private you will pay so best to have private insurance

it only gives you the same level of care as a local would receive. so dont expect to get everything freeand dont rely on it as your insurance

agreed
good for use for illness that is non emergency as you dont then claim on pvt ins

Same story with ESTA, the registration you have to do prior to travelling to the U.S. Some will offer this "service" for a fee, while you can do it yourself for free at esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/.

I think I read Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis says a charge is starting for this soon

Everytime I fill in my info. on the application form, I get this error:

Error 500: ; nested exception is: uk.org.ppa.common.error.ChainedRuntimeException: javax.transaction.TransactionRolledbackException: ; nested exception is: javax.ejb.EJBException: Unable to get connection from EHIC DataSource : Got minus one from a read callDSRA0010E: SQL State = 00000, Error Code = 0; nested exception is: uk.org.ppa.dataaccess.common.error.DAOTechnicalException: Unable to get connection from EHIC DataSource : Got minus one from a read callDSRA0010E: SQL State = 00000, Error Code = 0

Anyone know what this means?!

just to clarify, you still have to pay for an ESTA, but it's not a huge amount and is paid directly on the dhs.gov website.

The ESTA or EHIC? If the latter then I highly doubt it - it's a rather fundamental principle for the EU to make sure that we're all treated equally no matter which EU state we're from, I can't see them charging for it.

If you're talking about the ESTA then a charge was introduced ages ago.

Think ESTA is 14:00pound

Posted before but thanks.

Thanks for the heads up !!! Still have 7 months on current card.

I am trying to spread the info to others who are less fortunate than us to think of looking for them or dont have knowledge to understand in English.. old Middle eastern generation who dont have access to internet by informing as many people as I can.. my MOTO this year

CORRECTION: ESTA used to be free, but currently costs $14.

I was duped by this a couple of years ago - fortunately managed to cancel and do it the free way. Thanks for the link!

OH NO
I've just paid for mine a couple of weeks ago. I'm such an idiot. I thought it was all a bit odd. Shall see if I can try and get my money back. Probably not

How do people manage to end up paying for this?

If you type EHIC into Google the first couple of links are to the NHS and to the official EHIC website.

I did it 5 years ago for free, and it's basically cos I'm a tool.

I've done this for free a few years back and let some m8's know as well. Surprised people actually charge and create a business for this.

Just watch out. It may be difficult claiming for this, so get the paperwork right.

nice one squillion alerting that you don't need to pay for the ehic and the links to the apps

remember this isn't a replacement for travel insurance as you still may need to pay for treatment even if you are ehic holder and the treatment is free on the nhs. if that is the case travel insurance should cover this eventuality.

Thanks for sharing this.

Many insurance companies insist you have an EHIC card as well and will only pay up for any treatment not covered by it.

excellent post!!

going away next month so will be getting the family set up. does everyone in the family get a individual card or if applied as a family, does it all go on one card?

Surely it was my turn to post this freebie this time! … Surely it was my turn to post this freebie this time! ;)http://www.hotukdeals.com/freebies/free-ehic-card-nhs-1221223http://www.hotukdeals.com/misc/ehic-european-health-insurance-card-670763http://www.hotukdeals.com/freebies/european-health-insurance-card-1257275http://www.hotukdeals.com/freebies/european-health-insurance-card-its-335962http://www.hotukdeals.com/freebies/a-must-have-if-going-on-holiday-in-189710http://www.hotukdeals.com/freebies/european-health-insurance-card-1175989I'll say it again....HUKD mods, how about a "sticky" area for permanent freebies/vouchers....etc?????Is it really that hard? (actually, if you can't get your search function to work easily....then maybe it is!)

I can't believe this gets posted as often as it does. I'm even more surprised people don't actually know about it before seeing it on here. This replaced the old E111 that we all needed to fill out once upon a time.

I would like to add this only covers BASIC needs. In most countries, even x-rays are not covered and will need to be paid for. Nothing would be better than travel insurance. Just make sure you give CORRECT details. The amount of people I've seen overseas who failed to provide correct info to their insurance were left with very hefty bills.

For the sake of £5-20 for a single trip insurance, I'd rather be covered correctly.

Thanx heat added

Thanks for this, just off to Euro Disney so well worth getting for free

so what does this actually cover a person for exactly?

Hi i cant find my nhs card it says put main applicants NI number for my children will the card still be valid as ive used NI number. Thanks

squillion

Yep I just used my NI number for the kids it's not a problem

Thank you just got off the phone to them they said it fine.

Just got back from France, and used my EHIC for hospital treatment. @ 2100 euros per day, this thing is an absolute MUST for travelling in europe. Don't forget Travel insurance to top up the remaining percentage.

thanks for that
