There are new Free Highway Rat Forest Activity Trails dotted around all over the country either already open or opening in February.

You can have a great cheap family day out if you pack a picnic.

These seem ideal for younger kids.

The Highway Rat is the latest Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler book to be brought to life on our forest trails. Follow panels and discover the forest as you head on a journey with The Highway Rat and all the characters from the story.

What can you expect on the trail?Go in search of 10 Highway Rat-themed panels, each with fun facts and activities to try. As you go, look out for characters from the story, complete four rubbings and take your picture with the life-sized Highway Rat ‘Wanted’ poster!

The activity trail itself is free and there are free downloads on the site for it.

Parking seems to £3 all day most places

You can also pick up an activity pack for £3

You don’t really need the pack you can just wonder around the trail spotting the characters
Moors Valley Country Park looks great thanks!
Nothing near merseyside
I took my two boys yesterday to the one in Hertfordshire, don't bother buying the activity pack, take some crayons and paper for the posts where rub marking is required. Great fun jumping in the mud puddles. Parking was £1.70 for two hours, plenty of time with two kids under 3
Thanks, we've done gruffalo ones in the past, it's a nice way to get the kids outside for a walk. Agree you don't need the packs, at my local one it almost takes longer to divert to the centre to get the pack than do the highlights of the walk itself.
Thanks for this. Did the gruffalo one last year and the kids loved it so will give this one a go.
Haldon Hill near Exeter have this trail.

Not open at Sherwood Pines yet. Bit rubbish that they removed the Gruffalo trail before Christmas but still not ready with the replacement.
