If you are 60 or over, and your savings or assets (excluding your home) do not exceed £20,000, apply for AgeUK's HandyVan service. If they operate in your area, they come to your home and fit security devices (e.g. door chains, window locks), smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and new light bulbs. They can even do small repairs around the house. And they do it free of charge. To apply you just email them.

Thanks for this OP

We know an elderly lady who is nearly blind and has a voice box due to having had cancer...............she paid some men to do her garden and only discovered they had done NOTHING when I came to visit.

I love the old folk of this world and hate hearing bad stories of them being ripped off so its nice to see a good service like this available to them free

Great idea, have some heat

With savings/assets under £20,000... think they will have much worth stealing?

Sounds like a stupid observation but the biggest deterrent can be not having anything worth stealing. Locks are designed to keep honest people honest most of the time, with enough will most locks (or doors in general) will give way.

But the peace of mind having extra security on their property is priceless for an elderly person

It's not just about locks they also do preventative stuff like fixing carpets down, small repairs even changing a light bulb that kind of thing, you know how hard it is to find a reliable contractor now imagine you're 70 it's even harder.

You don't have to have money to be burgled

This is great luckily for them we got the MiL moved in next door she's 61 and her carer is in her 70's so end up popping round to change bulbs and other little jobs like that they'd have to pay someone otherwise but who do you pay? Great idea this service!!

I have just asked a colleague of mine who is the National AGEUK Handyvan Manager. He confirmed that there is definitely a service in NI (albeit very limited).

He advised to just call 0808 8087575 and speak to either Margret Robinson (NI Handyvan Administrator) or Jackie Constavin (NI Handyvan Service Manager).

Hope this helps

A thief won't know what's inside their house untill they are in and the effect of having an intruder in your own home is detrimental, especially for an elderly person.

Not only that it provides other services such as hand rails, knocking carpets down ect.

Great service!!!!

fantastic find..my dad lives 20 minutes (by car) from me and I am his carer so this would give me a little bit of piece of mind.

NICE TO KNOW.MANY THANKS
