Credit should go to J4GG4, posted 4 years ago, and this is STILL WORKING.

Being in Cat A/B/S/N can significantly affect its resell value, and should exercise with caution.

Say check out CV16ZNM, ... , It should say "Cat S" under "Your Advert" assuming you are selling it

It is SO USEFUL!

The category explained for those who doesn't know (from RAC):

rac.co.uk/dri…9bf

"I've stumbled upon a way to determine if a car is a CAT D / CAT C / CAT N / CAT S without the need to buy a HPI check.

Thanks!

=============================================================
INSTRUCTIONS:

1. autotrader.co.uk/sel…car (or click the red "GET DEAL" button)

2. Type in the cars REG number (CV16ZNM) and Mileage (Doesn't work for vans)

3. Click "CREATE YOUR AD"

4. If it has picked all the car details up you're good to go. Now please click "NEXT STEP"

5. Now we're on the page that displays the estimated vehicle value. And on the right hand side you'll clearly notice if its a CAT C or CAT D, N or S. If it is a CATC, D, N or S then auto trader will not give you a estimated value.

Up there with "Never buy a used car in the rain"!
A really good APP to download from the store is Vehicle Smart, its free and tells you all the previous MOT's and what they failed or advisory's were, tells you the price of the car tax and other useful stuff.

So you know if something has been damaged, before you drive hours to see some moron, that claims they have lost the v5 to avoid telling you it's on the register?

Nope still shows nothing

I've put in an old Car of my and that came up with cat B write off (before the car details Confirmation page). Maybe the S&N options have been removed?
Excellent, cheersA

It won't help if its on finance, more of a problem than losing some value than losing the entire car.
Ive used this method in the past when I was going to look at a used car about 90 miles away and I was dubious about the price/advert

Not got a problem with buying a cat D car(now N) , my first car was a cat D , but knowing saves you paying anywhere near the market value for the car .
Wouldn't trust their basic HPI check, I got seriously stung by a rogue trader as they entered a different registration and ironically they "lost" the logbook...Car was a Cat C and packed up within 2 months. Had to pay to scrap the car in the end
Do you have to sign in to get the results ?

No you dont
I’ve just entered my reg in, the car is cat c and it isn’t displaying anything after the correct details are shown. It’s just asking me to sign in after I put the value of the car.
Anyone tried a plate on this that has worked today.
Ive tried a few from the comments
None seem to work.
Making me question its reliability.

You can go to eBay and search term most cars for "damage car salvage"

Providing you entered the registration and any number on the mileage it should work!
Tried 4 cars - none have come back showing anything.
I think personally I wouldnt use this as the sole way to determine its accident or "cat" history- as all 4 failed to show this.
But if it helps others great
Unreliable for me

Your car needs to be written off by insurance for this to work. Hope this helps!

Wouldn’t your insurance company provide you with this info? If you call just to enquire about purchasing a new car/ potential quote. Guaranteed reliable information.

Ah ok so potentially if someone doesnt claim or go through insurance and self repairs etc
It wouldnt come up.
And therefore may not pick up potential damage we should know about.
Is that fair in saying ?

Sorry my reply was to esimple not deanwall
My bad
i just checked my old written off car, lt55xul reg, and its not showing up as a cat C , its on its 4th owner?!?!?
Don't know how reliable it is but it works on our school run car. We know it's a cat c and it says it is. This "trick" has been well known to a lot of people for going on 2 years now but I'm not sure how much use it actually is. If you're buying anything over a grand (for example, depends on where you place the risk point), you'd probably want a full hpi check. And for anything under that, the fact that it's a cat c/ d etc is almost irrelevant, the car should really be judged on its own merit. For £600 I'd rather have a tatty but mechanically sound cat c 2010 Astra like we bought, than the hpi clear, but rusting 12 year older Lupo that we looked at for the same money.
Had a few cat Ds in my time, bought for under value obviously, nothing on any V5. the secret is to get photos of the damage prior to repair and then inspect that area to see its been done correctly, bought a neatly new toyota a few years back and all it had was a new back door.

I'm more interested to know if its Cat C/D. A 10+ year old car is more likely to be a Cat C/D than have finance still recorded against it.

No Dvla don't listed insurance category write offs on v5..I've recently checked a few cheaper than should be cars for sale by using the AT sell site and it's shown them all as cat D.
Thanks will be using this soon.

But what does it really matter? For a cheap car it doesn't really affect the price. Obviously it can knock thousands off a £20k car. Having worked in a bodyshop, I've seen cat c's that have barely any damage, I've also seen unrecorded cars that I wouldn't be comfortable driving my family in but they were straightened out and put back on the road.
