And I could add a hundred more superlatives in praise of this debut novel by L A Hill. It is set in a beachtown unversity in England in a sports faculty small enough to be almost incestuous where bitching and back-stabbing is the norm. Our main character is Ellie who is as big as she is belligerent and bolshy. But underneath all that bluster, there is someone else trying to get out but it takes a Helena (and a Joanna) to help her find the path. It is a love story of sorts but not in the usual sense of the word. In a way we get to accompany Ellie on her journey back to loving herself, to her feeling worthy of loving and being loved. Her losing a few mill-stones on the way is all to the good. LA Hill has a wonderful turn of phrase and her writing made me smile, it made me laugh out loud, it made me tear up, it made me cry and it also made me think. It takes a good writer to achieve all of that. Well deserved five stars.
