This deal is expired. Here are some options that might interest you:

Players who have purchased Minecraft: Java Edition before October 19th, 2018 can get Minecraft for Windows 10 for free by visiting their Mojang account. Log into account.mojang.com, and under the “My Games” heading you will find a button to claim your gift code. If you purchased Minecraft: Java Edition after October 19th, 2018, the button will not be there, so if you’re unsure of when you purchased Minecraft: Java Edition, that’s a good way to check. Pressing the button will generate a token and send you to a Microsoft redemption page.

If you have an older Minecraft account (you still log in with your username), visit this article to find out about account migration. Once you’ve migrated your account, you will be able to claim a code for Minecraft for Windows 10.

You must be signed into a Microsoft/Xbox Live account in order to redeem the code. Please note that you cannot move the license once the code has been redeemed. Your code is saved on your Mojang account page for future reference.

Bugger, can't remember my login from years ago.
My son has pocket edition (Android) and Xbox 360. Are any of those considered Java editions?

No, the Java version is the Java version.
What is the difference between the two versions technically?
I mean, last time I played (a few month ago), the Java version was working perfectly fine.
What is the logic behind this do you think? Are they planning to phase out java and have only bedrock edition?

Java gets all the updates directly and windows 10 edition gets the updates a couple of months after they come out

Nah its definitely not to kill off Java, the vast majority of YouTubers all use java for its many benefits, but having more people on bedrock helps them financially. The marketplace it more user friendly and monotized as well as helping them push for people to purchase realms.

I have java but primarily play Bedrock because I can put my world into my realm and then continue the same game on the switch portably. Plus cross platform play with other users is always handy as not everyone has a PC for gaming.

java edition is on pc only windows 10 / bedrock is what the consoles have. Java edition can only play with java edition, bedrock edition can crossplay between all the consoles, pc and android. Java edition also has alot more freedom for mods.
I'm a year and a half too late

Cool thanks for the insight!
I bought java beta back in 2010(?) when Notch got his paypal disabled due to suspected fraud. Then bought another java account a few years later for me and son to play together.
Mostly kids are on bedrock on xbone now...
I rarely play now but do enjoy the yt documentaries on 2b2t

My teen son JUST paid for this yesterday afternoon. And he had Minecraft from years ago...

Ok, so there is no specific reason to actually download Windows 10, as far a we know.
Strange move from them...
Hasn't this been a thing for years?

Yes it has. Since the non-Java "Bedrock" edition has been available.
I guarantee a massive chunk of the cheap keys for bedrock edition sold by grey key sellers are from hacked accounts that did not redeem this.
So if people find that they can't login to their old Java account or their key is already used you probably used the same username/email/password on a known data breach and someone stole your key.

The Bedrock edition is cross platform and has the store built into it. that's the only benefits that i can think of.
java just better and can have mods
Java edition is the only one available on Mac.

So, it's a free copy of Minecraft, on PC, if you already own a copy of Minecraft, on PC, that you bought 2+ years ago. OK then...

Thanks OP, redeemed with no issues.
