Free Music For All (And Totally Legal)

If you haven't seen it before, Spotify is a free program whereby you can listen to (possibly) millions of albums - including most recent stuff. There are options to pay if you want to get rid of the adverts but free if you don't mind one every now and again.

Spotify .... totally awesome :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

I've used this for ages, its brilliant

just signed up yesterday for to them will try this service when i get home as i could not install it as work because of lack of administration rights good find heat added

Also if you add the ask and record toolbar you can also record all the music for free and it also splits the tracks automatically and then you can delete all the adverts so technically your not downloading the songs your recording them!! woop woop

I personally prefer www.last.fm for my free music fix.

If you haven't heard of it its like spotify only you instead of saying you want to listen to Nine Inch Nails say you'd like to listen to bands like Nine Inch Nails, and it plays odd NIN songs mingled in with bands of a similar genre. What's best is if you tell it what songs you like and dislike it starts honing in your music.

last.fm also doesn't have adverts.

good service, can't wait until mobile version is available...

Good post. Worth throwing on here every now and again to let new people know about this great piece of software. I'm just hoping the rumours are true about it coming to the PS3. Fingers crossed.

I'd never heard of it and I have just downloaded, it's cool so thank-you.

it should deffinately come out on the iPhone, but it would mean people wouldn't use the iTunes store.
hmmmm

totally awesome, but is it a industry killer? or a consumers dream? both me thinks!

testing it on Firefox

addons.mozilla.org/en-…402

Highly recommended, I've been using this for a few months now.
You can upgrade to a premium service for £9.99 per month if you want to listen ad-free though for the few ads there are it doesn't seem worth it.

They've also introduced 24 hour day passes for 99p:
"No recurring fees. No advertising. Just you and your favourite music. You might be planning a romantic dinner for two, or partying with friends into the early hours of the morning. A day pass is ideal for the casual Spotify user who decides that all they want right now is music."

Compile a playlist or several and away you go

I love Spotify!!!
It's a shame that they don't have any MEtallica or AC/DC on there, but it's a godsend for all of my Euro power metal needs

Exactly, not going to happen

Spotify is great (although perhaps this should be in freebies?)

The thought of voluntarily installing a browser toolbar is a bit odd, especially as Spotify isn't web based does it really work for that? Not to mention just because it might work doesn't make it legal and sort of defeats the whole point ;-)

Anyone got it to work with Windows 7?:?

I love Last.fm but I think Spotify fulfils a different service. It's essentially iTunes with all the music already purchased. Last.fm offers songs like the radio but Spotify lets you find a specific album or artist and play their music! It's as brilliant as Napster was when I first discovered that years ago.

I prefer GrooveShark myself, as it's browser based.

I'd question the legality of this.

First I ever heard of it was when it turned up as a detection signature on a company IPS. When I looked it up for the life of me I couldn't tell what what they were offering exactly. Seemed particularly odd and dodgy, as it said it was by 'invitation only'.

It's seems like P2P file sharing using ads to fund the service (i.e. illegal distribution of copyright material) but for streaming play only . I can't believe the copyright holders are agreeing to this and taking a cut of the advertising profits? but I might be wrong? As it's only ever streaming you never get to keep the track -seems a bit cloak and dagger and frankly weird if it's genuinely being used by the recording industry!?

Spotify is 100% legal and supported by the music industry!

en.wikipedia.org/wik…ify

It's all legal, they have royalty deals with major record labels. Enjoy it while it lasts though as I read last week they might struggle to make it work as basically hardly anyone is signing up to the paid service, most people just listen for free and atm the sums don't add up so they might be forced to close.

I've gone back to last.fm
The Spotify ads were just too annoying, especially the "Hi, this is Adam from SpoDify ...", and after a month became more frequent.

to rip spotify use ]Replay Music

Works with me on windows seven x64
Been on it for ages. Got my sister and dad onto it too!

why does this deal have an expiry????? Spotify is always free.

As an alternative try grooveshark. I found a Mothers of Invention album on there which no other site had.

I've been using Spotify for a few months, and it also can do all of that. When you click on an Artist, you have "Artist Radio" where it plays bands of a similar genre etc. amongst tracks from that artist - this is not my cup of tea at all, much prefer listening to albums all the way through, but the feature is there if you want it. It also gives you recommendations on the Home page based on music you have previously listened to on Spotify. The ads aren't that intrusive and I can honestly say I've not been this excited about digital music since the mp3 and Napster.

Download and install it - the service is second to none.

thx  its a great programme to use
rep added:)
