Found 22nd Apr 2015
Just a heads up recently Microsoft made there office 365 software free for students and teachers who hold an eligible email address. E.g johnsmith@bed.ac.uk

It is usually £60 or so a year so quite good if you are eligible. Simply type your school/college/univeristy email address into the website to check and see if you qualify.

Enjoy.

What is Office 365 Education for Students?
Office 365 Education for Students is an Office 365 plan that is available for free to students who attend academic institutions that have purchased Office for faculty and staff available at office.com/Get…365. This plan allows students to install Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Publisher, and Access on up to 5 PCs or Macs and Office apps on other mobile devices including Android, iPad®, and Windows tablets. The plan also includes 1TB of OneDrive storage, managed by the school, and students can edit and collaborate using Office Online, Yammer, and SharePoint sites.

What are the eligibility requirements for Office 365 Education for Students?
Schools qualify for this benefit when they have licensed Office institution-wide for their faculty and staff through Microsoft’s Volume Licensing program and are enrolled to allow students to sign-up directly with Microsoft. Active full- or part-time students at qualifying schools are eligible if they:
Have a school-specific email address provided by the school (for example, contoso.edu) that can receive external email
Are of legal age to sign up for an online offer individually (13 years old)
Have Internet access

If you're going to try find a 'work around' you might as well just pirate it, you'll be breaking the EULA and other terms anyway if you're not a genuine student/teacher.

Anyone know if Manchester Uni qualifies?

Only issue with this, is that towards the end that data is snatched from you, unless you upgrade, and then youre in a bit of a pickle

Dropbox did this with the whole space race, and then they took it away in March and not say...July..

Howd you manage to get an ac.uk account as an alumni?

Use Libre Office, free forever, both financially and personal freedom. Don't give evil corporations your details no matter what they're offering you, they're just trying to get you hooked or trapped in their file formats and/or storage services. Microsoft don't care about you so stop caring about them.

If you must use office, please don't send out files to people in proprietary formats (.doc, .docx etc), it's inconsiderate as you're expecting people to buy office to read it. They are also not presentation formats (neither is ODF) so you look like an idiot when it doesn't display properly because the viewer is using different software or a different version to you.

What format do you recommend then?

I wonder if my student email from college last year will work

PDF. Looks the same whatever you view it on and viewer is free.
Use whatever you want to create the document and print to PDF before distributing.
There are several free Print to PDF programs out there.

BRB putting my powerpoint presentation on a PDF

Besides, the opensource ones out there do open ".doc" and ".docx" programs as well as allowing you to edit them

You're more likely to look like an idiot NOT sending in DOCX, PPTX, PPT (etc) format since the majority of people use Microsoft Office and understand these formats. Any decent open source alternative will also support these formats since they realise it is a necessity to get any users. Using other format you risk them not understanding what it is, especially in business.

Andif any thing it's inconsiderate to NOT send it as a .doc because most people have MS Office and .doc can be opened on few of the popular opensource ones too. ODF won't with MS Office, but .doc will work with Libre Office (Or it did??) And Id assume both at least work with RTF documents.

Thanks for this OP. Have now discovered that my daughter's secondary school is signed up for this, but haven't bothered telling either the students or the parents! Just downloaded it for her to use at home. We normally use Google Docs, but it is blocked at her school. Have also used open office, but like Google Docs simplicity (very user friendly) and that it is on any computer once I log into Google+.

Can you still use it after you finish uni?

Got leaflets about this from work after Christmas. Have gave up trying to download this now as it keeps saying I don't have a license from my place of work for it, even though the board sent me the details
