i have an old laptop which was struggling to operate on windows xp so i installed ubuntu linux operating system. the difference in performance was unbelievable especially as it is FREE OF CHARGE.
i recommend to try this and see what a difference it makes to your pc.

Why cold? Everything the OP wrote is true. I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on an old laptop too and found that it worked great.

I supose people are voting this cold as it is hardly news and ubuntu has been around for years for free, rather than the fact that it is a great free product and in that sense a very good deal. Though I am sure there are stil plenty of people out there who have a old PC knocking about somewhere that they should really try it on...

Just because people have already heard about it and think the OP is a idiot for not having known about it for the last 2-3 years! Its the HUKD mentality.

Personally I have never had a Ubuntu install work properly but have puppy linux as a permanent install on one of my laptops, wireless, printing and pretty much everything else I needed straight out of the box! Can't fault it

That was what I was thinking, it is free by nature.

Anyway, xubuntu is probably a better choice for old laptops and underpowered desktops, XFCE is much lighter than GNOME.

Or there is lubuntu for the extremely light systems. Xubuntu is normally better for the average user though.

In the end it's not a better price than usual.

Its a bit hard to improve on free.

Most of us know about it but there are many that dont. Worth a post so voting hot

the negative voting just shows that there are at LEAST 6 braindead HUKD users who took the time to vote on something they probably dont even understand!

Ubuntu is a good OS and goes someway to show how bloated a lot of the Microsoft OS's are!

if you have never heard of ubuntu, then you really shouldnt be installing it.

Not really true anymore, ubuntu is much more user friendly than it used to be, pretty much any windows user with common sense can make the switch and not feel too much difficulty

I imagine people are voting cold because it's not really a deal, it's more information.
Rather like me starting a thread about going to your local library to read a book and it's Free!

IMHO that is just a tad insulting. I have just voted cold because of your comment!

Of course I know what Linux is; it's what Bill Gates used to test Vista! Lol.

Voted hot. It's gone positive now I don't think something like ubuntu should ever get cold votes. I don't use it on a regular basis but over the past 5 years or so if I have a problem with a laptop that seems beyond repairing I always get the ubuntu cd out for a clean install and to see what's wrong - it will always get me up and running again to at the very least test out any faults there may be - if I can't get ubuntu running on it I'd say it's probably f****d!

As an Ubuntu fangirl I had to vote hot. Besides being free, powerful, easy to use and hugely customizable, I haven't had a single virus/malware related problem with any of my computers since I first began to use it a couple of years ago. Help make it hot to raise awareness! =]

The cold votes were probably to do with the fact it's been posted twice before last time

I installed it recently on a Pentium 4 desktop & works like a treat. The interface is very modern compared to XP.

thank you op and the rest of ya moaners why bother?
just get a life.
voted hot hot hot
yes ive had this for years but its still good to tell other people about it.
to the OP take no notice of these cockroach`s.

can i install it on a brand new laptop? if so will everything work as it would normally? im a little sceptical as i know little about how it really works. any advice?

You can boot it from CD to try it without installing. If you use an ATI/Nvidia graphics card advanced features like graphics drivers wont work fully when running from CD, as it has to download and install propriatry drivers. Everything will be much slower when running from CD, opening programs like Open Office Writer etc. It's a nice way to see if you like the general idea.

It's "brain dead" not "braindead", if you're going to **** people off at least get it right :P

I disagree, at least this gives people a free alternative. Unlike Microsoft operating systems linux can boot from CD, people can test it and see if they like the looks of it.

thanks!!!

it's pretty good but there's been a lot of moaning about ubuntu switching to the unity desktop, i've also heard most people saying that mint is a better option: linuxmint.com

mint is ubuntu but tweaked to make it more user friendly. i installed it on a friend's laptop last week and it was very easy to get it working in a dualboot environment with windows xp. it was voted the best linux os of 2010 here: dedoimedo.com/com…tml

i personally use sabayon ( sabayon.org ) and find it very easy to use and very powerful.

to offer a bit of criticism of the OP, i don't think ubuntu would be a very good choice for older machines. i agree that xubuntu or lubuntu would be better (i prefer lxde to xfce anyway), but i would strongly recommend from personal experience (7 year old thinkpad with pentium III 1.2ghz processor and 256mb ram) archbang linux: archbang.org/ . it's the only slimmed down distro i've used that still feels complete and it works fine with all my hardware (including a pcmcia wireless card vie ndiswrapper)

linux is not only better than windows (windows is only good because of the availability of software written for it rather than its own merits) but it's far more exciting because of all the variety/diversity there is

FFS this again

Not this, again.

Linux Mint is better as a "My First Linux" for newbies.

Put it on my laptop and love. Try it you can run it side by side to windows

I was thinking exactly that!

Voted cold, os wouldn't recognise old nvidia chipset or wireless.

Oh and I doubt the op is as clever as he/she makes out.

Awsome OS !!!

It is much better experience to have Ubuntu than a paid software like Windows or Mac.

If someone is stuck with screen looking like Windows or Mac... there are free software available to make you screens & UI look like Windows/Mac. However Ubuntu itself has much better UI.

linux os's have always been free >.> that's like the point of them. not voting hot because it's not a deal, it's just an alternative that's always been there

(i've tried out redhat and mandrake before)

Installed it once, graphics were so messed up that half the desktop was off screen. Because of this, couldn't see to navigate around to try and find suitable drivers. Uninstalled it, never looked back. Failed at the first hurdle (and i'm very tech-savvy; that's how unusable it was)

there's loads of distro's out there one getting good reports for netbooks lappys is "Jolicloud"

That's truly pathetic shame on you

As you can't vote on neutral, its a hard one.
Its always been free, so not a new bargain.

Which Nvidia chipset, which wireless? Linux supports more devices than any other OS. You know that an OEM XP installation wont recognise this chipset or wireless device without drivers?

have always been an advocate of Ubuntu, and was of Red Hat before they started charging. Spread the word!

Ahhh come on, this is an offers site. This is like those damn Apple threads about whether Windows is better than Mac OS X etc etc... every time a cheap(er) iMac / iPhone / Macbook is found...

Vote on the OFFER!

And what is the offer? Nothing. There is no offer! This is the price of Ubuntu, always has been, always will be.

Therefore it's not an offer, it's not cheaper than it is elsewhere, therefore it's cold. Doesn't matter if it's someones pet love, Doesn't matter if it's cheaper than Windows. Doesn't matter if it's the ultimate OS ever made, it's still not an offer.

This is not a moan. This is purely objective facts, how can anyone vote otherwise?

Your 'facts' are wrong.

It's not posted in 'deals' it's posted in 'freebies'. It's not supposed to be cheaper than it is anywhere else, it's free hence the 'freebies' section.

It is technically an offer, is it's something that is on offer for people. Consider what the word offer means.

Perhaps you should familiarise yourself with this site, how it works and what each section is for. You seem confused by what the site has to offer and frustrated by this posting.

Freebies are things you can get for free! Whether it's a free download or … Freebies are things you can get for free! Whether it's a free download or a free pair of socks, you can post it here. Free items included with a purchase are considered deals, since a purchase is still required.
