Wish I was on the Dole!
To those not on benefits, it might be worth either calling the company used by Tesco or checking through the yellow pages as sometimes they do it cheaper.
Also worth noting the ]new measures introduced by Gordon Brown but (1/2 cost covered by Government I think) but not sure when this will start.
You don't have to be on the dole either, my parents and my GF parents are both affluent and both had it done with 50% off. £250 for the whole house I believe, per sq meter that must work out mega cheap.
They say it saves at least £100 a year of your bill so really is a no brainer.
I've thoroughly looked into it & can't get discounted offers at all.
I can go anywhere and get 1 type of insulation for approx £199 (Loft or Cavity Wall).
My local council doesn't have any subsidised grants available until March/May next year!
I'm hoping Gordon's Initiative will mean grants are increased & available to more people but not holding my breath.
It might well have it.... mine is 1987 and it has!
Cheers thanks
Think Id rather go with an electricty company than Tescos personally.
Also most all houses buit after 1930s have cavity walls and some before (my place is 1906 and has cavities - now filled) way to tell if you can see the bricks is if the bricks all go same direction longways its a cavity wall.
The cavity in house walls is there for a reason - it acts as a bridge to keep damp out. If you fill it, the damp can cross. So in some houses, cavity wall insulation can be a very bad idea.
The Electricity companies have been offering this for years (with one subsidy or another) so for the sake of a £1 Id go with them.
Tescos sell baked beans - what do they know about home insulation and energy efficeincy ??
Our housing association won't give us any insulation other than the very minumum loft insulation which is already there and i can't find anywhere that will do it for less than full price :x
I would have thoguht they'd be happy for you to get the work done, give them a call and check, it's worthwhile for most people and it'll save them getting it done in the future. May even contribute some towards your costs??
Ive applied for 40%+ discount but theres no mention of any costs!
Housing association say we can have it done but we have to pay for it ourselves, rang a couple of places to see if we could get any discounted prices but they said the grants available are to help other sectors of housing at the moment and they aren't targetted at helping our situation :-(
Yes, and it still does keep the damp out. If you have bricks (or pointing!) porous enough for this to be problem, then I would suggest it is a serious enough defect to need some specialist help whether or not you are planning on filling the cavities! For one thing, the wall ties may well have rusted out already in that sort of situation!
In the past cavities were often ventilated too, until they realised that CAUSES damp in the form of condensation on the extra cooled internal walls, which end up performing little better than single brick solid walls!
Insulated cavities have in one form or another been compliant with Building Regulations for donkey's years now, and in fact it is pretty much nigh on impossible to MEET the required insulation standard without that (or more complicated methods)
What you say does however illustrate the need for the right advice, ESPECIALLY if you live in high exposure areas, as one solution does not necessarily "fit" all.
If you are in an area they cover then you can get it cheaper or even free!
I got cavity wall installation for £99. I could have got the loft done for £99 but I’ve got boards down. My parents are over 65 and got theres done for free!
Pity they won't see this deal as they can't afford to buy anything :w00t::p
Site down ? Take a look at www.warmfront.co.uk
Either that or they need to fire their web designer...

You make me laugh. Do you honestly think your local checkout operator will be round to do it for you? It will be done by a professional company!
You took the words right out of my mouth! Just because it's being offered under the Tesco name, doesn't mean they're gonna pop in and insulate your loft after delivering your groceries!!
They will have agreements with approved installers.
if you can afford a property to rent out you shouldnt be entitiled to anything for free in my opinion
This was posted on another thread, which certainly helped me make my mind up with regard to cavity wall insulation.

I'd be very interested to hear more about this, I have also got a let property and the boiler is on its way out and according to the tenants is very costly. Do you know what the criteria is?
I don’t think that’s a fair comment. People have individual circumstances and a rented property in the current economic climate can be as much a burden as an asset.
Looking at the bigger picture landlords pay taxes to the government and so should be entitled to government initiatives. This scheme will benefit tenants of rented properties and reduce their living costs and in theory help ‘save the planet’ which can only be a good thing.
Very interesting read
will also add value to landlords houses and probably give them an excuse to bump up the rent
That askjeff article is always banded about by doom and gloom merchants, but haven't seen ANY other articles that support him. He just wants publicity...
If the wall tyes are dirty (ie cement landed on them when the rest of the wall was built), then there is a chance that damp could pass through, but with so many houses now a days getting cavity wall insulation, this can't be a major problem now.
This made perfect sense to me and I find it odd that the we're all now 'told' to 'fill it up' :? The inner course of my house is made of insulation blocks and was rated as an energy efficient design when sold (18 ish years ago now). No harm in sticking a couple more inches in the loft but even then gotta be careful not to stop the airflow at the eaves!
I'm not a doom and gloom merchant. I was seriously thinking about having cavity wall insulation and even got someone out to quote. He was a right cowboy in my opinion, only took a few minutes to do the "survey" - I think loads of firms are just cashing in on all the grants that are available.
Ultimately it is really up to you whether or not you have this done to your home. I don't think the Jeff guy has any personal axe to grind, he is just giving his opinion and looking at it from another view. As for the 25 year guarantee, well from what he says that doesn't come into play because they just say the insulation isn't the cause:whistling:
I personally was not prepared to risk screwing up our most valuable asset for the sake of saving just a few pounds a year.
Yeah small fly by night companies like tesco are bound to be using some comboy or other for this exercise....better stay well clear :roll::roll:
Well yours is insulated, like mine, any extra would not meet current good practice anyway, so dead right when he advised you not to have it done.
