What about other 'key workers' who do long shifts?

My wife had 3 people die on her Saturday. Had to deal with the mess/ relatives/ paperwork. All in an 8 hour shift where she has been drafted in to a ward as her speciality (fertility) has been closed. Today she has had to deal with 40 formal complaints from the public as the fertility clinic has closed as she and the team have been drafted to a ward (therefore removing her from the ward for a full day). How was your day?

    Shock horror announcement:

    life’s sometimes unfair.

and it’s unlikely that anyone will be as at much risk as someone on the NHS front line.

There are also idiots who are verbally abusing nhs workers.

A friend of my wife, was queuing at the supermarket for the NHS only opening times, to have some clown shout “Virus Spreaders” at full volume.

The ignorance of these people is unreal!

The NHS from the top to the bottom is working themselves to the grave to try and save the sick right now, putting not only their lives on the line but also their own families.

Yet day after day, they go into work to save the lives of the very same idiots who wouldn’t follow the isolation advice in the first place.

It’s a thankless job, but they are willing to do it, if only the idiots would stop and think for one moment before acting.

What happened to literally a couple of months ago, “in a world that you can be anything, be kind”?

Why do people on here seem to get really angry at those that talk about supermarket workers having a hard time? I don't ever see them detracting value from NHS workers, they're just asking for some recognition of having to still be in danger with the amount of people that refuse to grasp the seriousness of the situation. I don't personally work in a supermarket but I'm sure as hell grateful that these people are still going to work because without them, we would be getting no supplies. Again, I'm not detracting value away from NHS workers in any way because they are amazing but I'm fed up of people starting an argument about who is more important or what job is harder. It's not a case of just 'stopping a loaf of bread' falling off a shelf as someone said earlier. I bet it's seriously hard work stocking a shop over and over because of aggressive panic buyers and serving arrogant, sick customers. So I personally say thank you to both NHS and supermarket workers for being out there and hope you stop getting hate for simply doing your job in hard and weird times.

It's not even like this offer is unfair. Companies are free to help out whomever they want- it's not unfair, its just who they've chosen.

I'm thankful for all trades that are keeping the country going, but for you to complain your trade doesn't get free shoes while NHS front line workers do? You should really consider climbing down from that pedestal and think about what really matters in life. (edited)

I definetely believe your wife deserves the shoes. As social workers, we only had 2 death people today and about 3 complaints. May be more, but we don't know yet, as we were busy visiting and helping vulnerable people at home, as lots of carers quit their job and there is nobody else to do it. And we don't even have hand gel, never mind masks or gloves.

I believe NHS workers are doing a great job and they definetely deserve all our respect and recognition. I also believe it is up the the businesses to whom they give freebies.

What I find sad is everyone praises NHS, I can see all offers for them, but completely forgets about the social care workers. We don't want any freebies, we just want others to recognise the importance of our role. (edited)

Im also a key worker on the frontline doing long hours and 8 day weeks, however I take my hat off to the extremely valuable nhs who deserve everything they get and much more, its just a shame certain folk seem to think they should be rewarded from saving a loaf of bread falling from a shelf!

Not disagreeing with your comment but I am concerned for supermarket workers at the moment. The amount of people they come into contact with and they have no protective equipment. Lots of the workers on the tills seemed to be older women too, probably close to the higher risk age.

Let’s not forget that key workers also include people working pharmacies and other allied health services that keep things moving too. My daughter is currently working 12 hour shifts rolling. So let’s not dig in too hard on people asking if it applies to other key workers.

That said, and I don’t mean this to distract from incredibly deserving nhs staff, I really feel for everyone who is dealing with the public at this time. Many people are out there working for minimum wage and, make no mistake, they’re at risk. Not as much by any measure as those in the nhs dealing with infected people and awful situations.

I got one am glad that there are people who re still servicing our needs for food, mail, transport and other vital services. So let’s be respectful please.

I wish the "what about me"? posts would stop. Nobody is implying anyone's life is less or more worthy than another's - it's a gesture of kindness towards people going into work everyday - not even sure they have the right PPE - seeing colleagues going off sick, even dying. They're overwhelmed, stressed, probably don't even have enough beds or equipment as patient numbers rise. They're doing their best and probably feel at times they don't have the support of their management or the public.

The worst part is, this is just the beginning. They need our empathy, support and faith.

Anyone working with the public right now has my respect. Appreciate this as the compassionate gesture it is (I don't care if you think the business is seeking publicity, either), and stop taking it so personally. When did we become such a selfish, uncaring society?

Well said. The internet and relative anonymity can bring out the worst in folk and right now we need to see everyone’s best. Let not degrade each other for easy kicks.

Let me throw my 2 penny's worth in. I think an area that constantly gets overlooked are pharmacies. I mean our local pharmacy is barley able to cope. I've been in a couple of times and the abuse and aggression that they have to put up with. The pharmacist looked defeated but just carried on. He was saying afterwards that the workload is unbearable but the team will keep slogging through as it's their job. I think they're sort of in both roles. Frontline as they still see patients and support as they continue to deliver the services as effectively as they can. I can imagine there are so many other sectors of NHS getting overlooked. When we come through this chaos I hope that all the sectors across the board, not just Drs and nurses, but all the NHS and support. Plus other sectors that are seeing us through will get some sort of recognition.

In all honesty, I really don't understand why everyone is hating this comment... Yes I totally understand and havean incredible amount of respect for NHS workers - as a couple of my closest friends work for the NHS with ridiculous workloads at the best of times.. overworked and underpaid. And I'm happy like the rest of you that they are all finally getting the recognition and the extra support they deserve. On the other hand, I do know many other people that fulfill other "key worker" jobs. Such as people on the front lines having to deal with the victims of the virus and the people having to manage and combat the spread and work on a cure (I don't know all these people, but you get my point). And while it's not about the stuff, or the extra "rights" or the direct appreciation given by every business and commenter, I do believe that these people are also invaluable as the "glue" that is holding us all together through these times, and that they should not be out down as "ah well they're not as important as the NHS staff" , "they don't have it as bad as xyz" maybe they work 7 hours, maybe they work 13 hours.. it really doesn't matter. It's every single person putting their own heath and risk, to help others- selflessly, that fall under this category. There is so much more to fighting this virus and keeping us all safe than just NHS workers. All my respect to every single one of you making a difference out there.

    Stay safe everyone

Edit: it really shouldn't be a competition over who "has it worse". Everyone that is doing their bit deserves our respect and support. (edited)

If you're not frontline NHS (A&E, ICU etc) DON'T APPLY FOR THIS. I'm an MLA, we do a lot of running around but nowhere near as frontline doctors and nurses. They need these more. Be reasonable.

Things we should all agree on:

1). In the last 2 weeks, we have identified the people who really keep the country running. Not the investment banker or hedge fund manager, who get paid millions and do naff all. Where are they now? Safe in their penthouses whilst key workers are out putting their lives at risk.

    2. Who gets what freebie shouldn’t divide us. There are some groups that are seriously under recognised by companies. Key worker should mean key worker and offers should be available to anyone who carries out essential work. Equally don’t hate on people just because a company is unjust.

    3. Watching people die is horrendous. Especially when those deaths can be prevented by staying inside and good hand hygiene. Sadly, all key workers are faced with putting their own lives, their families lives and their patients/customers lives at risk because the country will crumble if they don’t show up to work.

    4. The UK was poorly prepared for this and herd immunity was a stupid stupid policy. (edited)

Please pass on my thanks and support for everything she is doing as we would be really stumped without her.

Im not a paramedic who transports the injured to hospital but am an NHS Ambulance driver who transports the ill patients to various hospitals around the country. We take patients with infections & infectious diseases, chemo patients, renal/dialysis patients, patients who are slowly getting better and patients who are in their final hours of life.
In a week's work we will drive many hundreds of miles and visit numerous wards and hospitals and hospices.
We have now been asked if we can also transport Covid-19 patients.
Myself and crew colleagues are all on £8.21 - £9.00 an hour and during our 10-12 hour shifts we are lucky if we even get to have our one 30 minute unpaid break.
Our supplies are very low and some have already ran out. We have no hand sanitizer left and most our gloves are out of date.
I'm not expecting any freebies or even any sympathy but please remember there are people out there risking their health right on the frontline with little to no protection on a very low basic minimum wage too.

Wow what kind of self absorbed people are complaining about losing access to a (presumably, unless I'm missing something) non-essential clinic at a time like this. Not to mention who would want to even get pregnant at a time like this! Every hospital check up would be like dodging bullets not to mention the risk to the child if you catch it.

Try studying for 13 years, having to get the best grades each time and the toughest interviews. Try having to study each night at the age of 31about the anatomy and preparing yourself for a different body. Try going to work for 8am and coming home at 7pm, even though your 8 hour shift meant you finished at 5pm. Try having a day with staff-tired staff, shattered staff, underpaid staff- also, bullying is rife in the NHS. Try saving someones life but it doesnt work and they die. Try telling their family. Try having to deal with mental torture when covid 19 strikes....and we may have 1000 deaths per day which means absolute madness and chaos and try having to determine who gets a ventilator from a 21 year old prisoner or a 62 year o.a.p. Try sleeping on that.

I agree. NHS deserves more. But not to forget about the others. Even if they don't get any freebies, they try to do a good job while others are at home. We, as key workers were told the school is open for our kids, and if we don't want to take them to school (for obvious reasons) we can stay at home, but we will not get paid.
On TV now advice if you're not seriously ill, to stay away from hospitals. Great, but all responsibility falls on social care now. Nobody asks how social care copes...
At the end of the pandemic everybody will cheer for NHS, NHS workers will still be under paid and social care will have another budget cut. (edited)

Lol this virus has definitely bought the worst out of people. It's like a competition on who has a more important role. If a company wants to give out free shoes to NHS staff, then that's great, I'm sure theyre not judging , sure they'd give shoes to everyone in this terrible time but they are a business and need to pay their own bills too. Stop moaning guys, not good for your blood pressure or mental state.

I am classed as a key worker. I work in governance In the utility industry. We all have a part to play in keeping the world turning.

But I’m not nursing people through illness, pain, death, grief and I’m not putting my life at risk every minute of every shift. I’m haven’t needed to move out of my family home to protect my loved ones. I’m not dealing with a fountain of abuse while doing so

Our NHS workers deserve all the freebies and support they can get!
