Young people in Northamptonshire are being offered a free pair of special edition ‘Valentine’s pants’ by the NHS if they have a chlamydia test before February 14.

A new advertising campaign has been launched by the Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust which aims to encourage more people in the county aged between 15 and 24 to get tested for sexually transmitted diseses.

As part of the promomtion everyone who gets tested between now and Valentine’s Day will get a pair of Valentine’s pants with the wording’ Cupid ain’t stupid’.

Jason May, Chlamydia Screening Promotion Specialist for Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust said: “With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we want to remind people of the need to practice safe sex, and get themselves checked out.

“Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the country and because it often has no symptoms, many people don’t know they have it.

“If left untreated, Chlamydia can cause serious health complications including infertility. But the good news is that it’s easy to get tested and if you do have it, getting treatment is just as easy.

“If you are from Northants and aged 15-24, you can take a free test at any of our network of screening sites, or order a postal kit today.”

For a free Chlamydia testing kit, call 0845 602 311 or email chlamydiakits@northants.nhs.uk

Is this really a good use of NHS resources? It's not even an incentive

If they're from Northampton, you'd be lucky if they're wearing any at all.

No it is not at all, why would a sexual infection be something to be proud of? It is the people who do not have these tests done that you should be worried about. The free underwear is given away to anyone who is tested, it is not only given out if you test positive like some kind of reward. The freebie is just an incentive to try and get more people to be tested, especially young people and students. Many people find it embarassing but the more the NHS can do to try and at least treat those already infected the better, as it will hopefully mean less people are passing on the infection.

Chlamydia, Herpes and Genital Warts are all very common and you can become infected without even knowing - without sleeping around. You might not even develop any symptoms, which is why having a test if you are sexually active is very important thing to do.
