What is a Railcard?
A Railcard is a discount card that allows you to save up to 1/3 off the price of your train tickets, making it a great way to secure cheap fares.

Railcard types There are nine main types of UK Railcards available. These are:

  • Network Railcard
  • 16-17 Saver
  • 16-25 Railcard
  • 26-30 Railcard
  • Family & Friends Railcard
  • Two Together Railcard
  • Senior Railcard
  • Disabled Persons Railcard
  • Veterans Railcard
As an official retailer of Railcards from National Rail, you can buy seven of these in a digital format with us.

How much is a Railcard?
All new Railcards cost £30 for the whole year, except for the Disabled Persons Railcard, which costs just £20. Once you have a Railcard, you can get 1/3 off the price of your rail travel, making it a great way to secure cheap fares. Some Railcards are also available as a three-year option for £70, giving you even greater value for money (therefore costing around £23 per year).

I'm going to purchase a rail card for a return trip to London from Manchester for 2 in June next year, as it works out the same or slightly cheaper. Need to work out if its worth buying 6 months earlier to get this deal!

£90 a year "normally" so about £80. Or a bit less if it's a three year card.

Also the £90 needs to be across eligible tickets which depends on the railcard you're buying (and which you're actually eligible for)

Good deal, though useless for anyone who doesn't fall into those categories
Im a 38 year old single bloke who travels alone and doesn't have a disabillity, so can't get any of them. Yay for rip off full price train travel thats usually 3-4x more expensive than the coaches!

Nope, only for those in London and the South East of England!
    Network Railcard 1 year
    £30

For travellers in the South-East of England
Get 1/3 off travel after 10:00 am (and any time on weekends and public holidays). Applies only to journeys starting and ending in the South-East Network Railcard zone.

No good for someone in South Wales like myself.

You then possibly can use the Gold Card trick which you can search to article in the internet. In summary, you buy the cheapest gold cars like 150 quid to get most discounts, it only makes sense if you spend like 480 in a year to break even. Worth checking it I think. Hope this helps.

Had my claim 'rejected'. Trainline claimed I'd already had a railcard and this was for new railcard customers only. I've never bought a railcard from Trainline so assume they're just trying to get out of paying.

new railcard customers or new trainline customers only?

There's a subtle distinction there....I know it says new railcard customers only in teh above...so that seems harsh

The terms and conditions state "2. New Railcard customers only." - nothing about new Trainline customers.

I've had railcards bought at train stations before, but Trainline won't have any information about that.
