About this deal

What is Electric Universe?
Electric Universe is a public charging service to help make using and paying for public EV chargers easier.
Created by Octopus Energy, it gives you access to more than 380,000 chargers across the UK and Europe via one app or card. The app also has many extra features to make living with an EV even better.

One-tap access to thousands of chargers
Access and pay for EV charging with just one service - no more faffing around with RFID cards or charger network apps.

Simply sign up for free using our link at the top of this page, download the Electric Universe app and you're ready to go. You'll also receive an Electric Universe card to use.

One Bill
Connect your Electric Universe account with your credit/debit card or other payment method to make public charging payment easy. This helps keep all public charging costs nice and neat.

If you're an Octopus Energy customer, you can even have your public charging costs come out of your home energy bill, meaning even less paperwork!

EV Route Planning
The Electric Universe app has a handy map of all major public chargers in the UK and Europe, and you can also see which ones accept Electric Universe (which is most, anyway).

Plus, you can even use the route planner to plan your EV journey. It will automatically plan and optimise your EV charging stops to make sure you never run out of juice.

Discounted Rates
It doesn't cost any extra to use Electric Universe. The charging costs are the same as if you paid by contactless directly - in fact, in some cases Electric Universe offers discounted rates on certain chargers.

Check the Electric Universe app for the latest rates.

EV car charging is not cheap anymore. Most supermarkets started paid charge. home charging is still slightly cheaper than fuel, but going on long trip costs more as all fast charger are at rip of price now (edited)

My 200 mile commute costs me £6 in electric compared to £45 diesel.

I’m on intelligent Octopus tariff and it’s 38.5pkwh during day and 7.5pkwh at night (23:30 to 05:30) last month it said my blended average rate was 22pkwh so it works fine for me

the 38p during the day would kill me. theres no chance I'm leaving tumble dryers etc on while we're sleeping (had a fire previously). I'm on 19.97p / kwh with Eon Next (switched and fixed just before things went mental). our elec car costs about 6p per mile on this.

Anyone register and have any confirmation of where/how to use the £5? I'm probably missing something obvious...

Update for those also wondering about this: An hour after registering I got a confirmation email indicating the credit had been added to my account. (edited)

Why do a lot of these charge points need to be pre paid?
    bozo007's avatar
    Because they are unattended.

Looks like too much hustle to me for a 5 pound charge.

Tell me about it, I have to buy an EV now.

The lower night charge rate always come with much higher day rate and I feel that is even bigger headache.

It really doesn’t. My overnight is 7.5p the day is 38.5p. Flexible Octopus all day rates are 31.87p. That’s not a massive difference . But then I have solar & batteries so 97% of my usage last month was off peak which saved £223 (edited)

Reading about how they're creating a new service that stops you needing dozens of apps and RFID keys instantly makes me think of this:

I have an electric car, but I’m getting more disillusioned by the day. Not my smartest move.

    I'm sorry Dave

home charging is worth it for an ev but if your having to public charge a lot it's more expensive. specially of your ev doesnt do 300+ miles per charge

Depends how much you pay per kWh. At around 50p a kwh it’s a similar piece to diesel. Give that the kWh price is fixed no matter how much electricity you use the range is irrelevant.

I signed up for a similar deal previously for £5 credit and never got it.
I need to email Octopus Energy about it, their customer service is generally pretty good and I'm sure they'll sort it out.

Edit - Actually it's probably Smart Home Charge I need to contact as the £5 offer is provided by them. (edited)

I get that it’s a bit of a hassle but personally, I’ve managed to charge my hybrid once fully and have some left over credit. Combine this with other Octopus deals posted on here, it does make you wonder why big companies like BG or eon etc don’t do any of this! I hope this benefits the community x

Do you have to do a charge first to get the credit? I've signed up before but the credit didn't show until I used the app and then it was £8 off the next charge

I had similar. Signed up ages ago when there was supposed to be free credit but balance stayed at zero.

For a company that makes a big deal of selling their software to other companies, they don't half seem to cock up billing a lot. (edited)

Thanks OP, quite a varied choice of chargers, have these now taken over Genie point as I noticed Morrisons chargers are included?

This company is awful. They always got our bills wrong and upped our direct debit payments to £400 a month without telling us. We have left them now and are going to the energy ombudsman as they just ignored our complaints.
