Still passing mot?

I had an audi coupe until not too long ago - the speedo on that didn't work for several years (used to judge my speed from the rev counter).

Never got picked up on the mot - I assumed it was because they don't drive it anywhere to be able to check it?

Eventually I had to replace it when the rev counter also broke

Isn't this always free? It certainly gets constantly posted on here as a freebie 'deal'.

I once get into a conversation with a driver of some delivery truck which was smoking like a chimney, diesel with dpf cut off most likely and brown injectors. He said he doesn't care, as it is all right, because it just passed MOT a week ago. That how hard it is to get it done...
speedometer is not included in the MOT test,
Mine hasn't changed in 5 yrs !!!
Again
Ever been driving behind someone who inexplicably and suddenly slows to 30 at a 40 camera, or down to 40 at a 50?

It's most likely they've replaced their OEM tyres with low profile ones, and their speedo is no longer accurate.
Many are unaware quite how much a tyre profile change affects the gearing and therefore the speedo reading.
A GPS speedo lets you see just how much the speedo is out following such a tyre change.

My own car, with the correct standard fitment tyres, indicates 50 at a "real" 47 and 70 at 65

My point? A GPS speedo session, whether using this product or not, is a worthwhile exercise.

PS - the Permission requirements for this particular App are excessive.
Personally, I wouldn't touch this with a bargepole.

Playing devils advocate here, what is it that makes you believe that the GPS speedo is more accurate/correct?

I'm not disagreeing that there's a difference between GPS and mechanical - I've observed it myself, but I don't have enough facts to attribute one to being more correct than the other

FWIW, consumer level GPS is only accurate to ~10 meters, which is considerable when you're measuring speed

As I understand it, UK GPS accuracy is more like 10ft (3m) but in this instance that's an irrelevance, as in all likelihood it'll be the same, continuous variation. ie - it doesn't jump about once the device has locked onto a Sat signal.

My vehicles have totally mechanical speedos, which have no mechanism to compensate for tyre radius growth as speed increases for instance. In contrast GPS is 100% consistent.
If you need an app like this then go for TomTom amiGO. It does your GPS speed but also lists all known speed cameras and most of the time the mobile ones too. I believe that app is always free.
Always on app, excessive permission requirements... Their core business is not GPS speedo...

Agreed. TomTom amiGO is a good app.
Would be educational to use when travelling by train.
If an app is free then perhaps you're the product?
