Just saw this on le frontpage I don't know if it's been posted though of course I did check so kindly don't vote cold just because the search terms fail.

Yes yes you stand the possibility of being offered new this and new that but my understanding is that they don't hold a gun to your head and march you back into the shop to buy these things. Although I've not had this check done so I can't be 100% sure on that.

Cheers Op. I'll be looking into this. Heat

You will probably find that everything is 100% ok and you can drive away with a smile on your face.:)

Do they refill air conditioning gas free if it needs?

My suggestion would to just have it checked then. Free check is free.

With a Halfords car health check we look at 6 things:

The battery
Light bulbs
Windscreen wipers
Oil levels
Screen wash levels
Air conditioning

All basic stuff that doesn't require a spotty 17 year old to tell me (Cold)

Can't personally remember ever checking my air conditioning personally but should you be a bit of a home mechanic I'm very happy for you.

It's free so I'm not going to complain, but I would say that most of the checks are things that every driver should be checking before they drive anywhere, and they're all pretty easy to check...

The battery - Does car start? Yes... Battery is in working condition. No... Battery may be the least of your worries.

*Light bulbs Do the lights come on when you push the appropriate button, pedal, or turn the appropriate switch/dial? Yes... Light bulbs are good. No... Light bulbs may be a problem.

*Windscreen wipers Do they clear rain from the screen? Yes... All is well. No... Break out the cheque book,or consider becoming a fair weather driver until your next MOT.

*Oil levels Is there Brown stuff between the marks on the stick with a yellow handle? Yes... Good to go. No... Engine getting ready to seize, go to motor factors, do not pass go, do not collect £200.

*Screen wash levels Is there blue stuff in the white bottle marked screen wah under the bonnet? Yes... All clear. No, Pour in some from the bottle you have had in the boot since last Autumn.

Air conditioning Cold air on a hot day? Yes... Sweet. No... put up with the heat, you'll get better mileage with the AC off.

What are they gunning for? Replace your battery and re-gas your AC gov'ner?

Perhaps blades as well. But Summer is a time of distance driving, this should really include a check of tyres, brakes, and seat belts. Instead they check a bunch of things that you are (technically) obliged by law to check before you drive anywhere (items marked *). Obviously the the things I suggested should also be checked before every journey. However,we all know that most people never check any of these things, at least if Halfords checked tyres, brakes, and belts they would be helping to make cars safer.

A good offer to take up if you don't feel able to check the things they do. But remember,it is nothing but a sham in reality, and you have to ask yourself if you can trust them when they tell you something is wrong...

After the MOT episode my father-in-law went through, I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

Yes, they also replace all four tyres, carry out a full service, remove … Yes, they also replace all four tyres, carry out a full service, remove any dents/dinks to paintwork, fit neon lights under the chasis and give you a free "what a total moron" air freshner!

Neon lights under the car are illegal...

Neon lights under the car are illegal...

Only if you can actually see the bulbs or the light directly rinsing from them (if said light colour breaches The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations).

So a red under car neon under your rear bumper is perfectly legal, whereas one of any other colour would be illegal. Same with white at the front, and yellow on the sides.

A note of caution for anyone trusting their safety/repairs to Halfords
