that's not true in my waitrose, no purchase required at all.
We are asking myWaitrose members who wish to enjoy their free tea or coffee in ether a café, bakery or deli counter with eat in seating to also purchase something when enjoying their drink. This enables us to continue to offer our customers the enjoyable service they expect.

If you're not visiting the café, bakery or deli counter you can still pick up a free tea or coffee from the self-service machine when you are shopping with us.

Where do you see that? My local waitrose now keeps cups behind the till. They don't say you have to buy something, but you might as well if you're waiting in the queue anyway!
You're only allowed 1 cup a week but that's fine. When I go shopping with my other half to Waitrose, she wonders around drinking coffee and pointing at expensive items to buy while I scurry around behind her like some sort of butler. At least she's happy!

It's 1 per day as far as I know. It used to be completely free but now you have to be buying something else to get one

You only need to buy something if you are sitting in their café. If you don't want to buy anything it will be free and you can always sit on a bench outside.
We have to buy in ours, cafe or the deli. They changed it recently. I usually get the kids a babycinno (sp?) or go large on my latte! 30p isn't bad for a latte!

Our Waitrose doesn't have a cafe. It used to be that you could just go in and help yourself to one. But then they changed it so you needed to buy something if you wanted one. Then they stopped having the cups at the machines and started giving you one at the till if you wanted one because of people abusing the situation

My local waitrose in London (large store) just asks that you have your waitrose card on you, you can pick up a free empty cup from any till including the help desk. No purchase necessary. You can go in everyday, my neighbour goes there whenever he wants.

In York they scan your Waitrose card and only let you have one cup a week. So it seems this policy varies across the country!
You get a free newspaper if you spend £5, but the cost of the newspaper is included in the £5, as is the cost of your free drink. So, you only have to spend around £1.50 on other goods.

I get a totally free coffee to take away from self serve.

My wife likes skimmed milk which is only available from the café at a cost of 30p unless you buy something.......so we buy a 25p banana and save 5p LOL
My local Waitrose has started having soya milk at the self service machines.
it's still completely free daily at the little waitrose, no strings attached. the big waitrose only makes a purchase necessary in order to get the drink for free.

I was clarifying the point that if you want to sit down in their café you have to buy something or pay 30p for the coffee

Ah, so it does! Very odd as I've not seen one waitrose recently that has the cups at the self service. Ah well. Thanks for pointing that out.

Yes, you're right, self serve is free but they don't do lattes hence I just go deli and go large or get a reduced biscuit for 25p!

I thought political and legal equal opportunity means women can be like butlers scurrying around while the blokes wonder around drinking coffees shopping merrily away for technology for nickers and bras.

I hardly drink coffee but I go to many different Waitroses, my inference from casual observations is that busy passers by shops have cups controlled by staff at self service machines, however, shop which are out of the way where people walk through are nearly all Waitrose shoppers have cups put out. Though I think there are exceptions to every rule and policy and there is increasing commercial force to put away the cups.
Thank you.

That's not my experience, my large store allows you to take a cup everyday if you present a waitrose card. No purchase necessary.
May depend on the Waitrose. No more totally free drinks in mine. In mine you ask for a a paper cup from the general tills and need to purchase something however small-like a banana. Take the cup to the deli where they also serve coffee, then I take this to the cafe and sit down. I don't think this is their preferred choice. The other route is buy a cake etc from the café and get a china cup of coffee, tea etc free.
Free with Purchase, new changes as of 19th September 2016
