Have you ever tried to use this freesat digital box without satellite dish? Well, I think you would be disappointed with picture quality

Television ones... ;-)

Seriously, that would depend on which satellite that you focused the dish on.

I gave you an accurate answer.;-)

You will not actually get " Freeview " on any satellite receiver, it is only available via a TV Aerial.

Go to Lyngsat and choose an appropriate satellite, that will give you the channel listings.

Voted cold, you can buy and have freesat installed for £75 last time I looked.

Wrong, Freesat costs £75 just for the install, no receiver included, that's extra.;-)

OK, plenty of non-English language channels, but how about English language channels? Which satellite has the most (or most interesting) of these?

Ok but the LIDL one was £30 when it was on offfer a few months back and it will be out agin before long I'm sure. The only good thing is this includes the dish and LNB.

B&Q sell a Philex complete system for £40. I bought one 2 weeks ago and it's great. It's not on their website but it's ]This kit except 45cm and minus the sat finder. If this ]15% deal posted earlier is correct then it'll be £34.

http://www.philex.com/assets/parts/3392/28212R_Kit_all_full.jpg

So you point the dish to a satellite listed on the lyngsat website and you get all the channels that are listed for free? No need for any additional cards or anything? If you want a different set of channels do you just reposition the dish?

A friend wants to know whether the adult channels are any good or just the freeview rubbish :-D

tawke: do you know if your philex system pics up live premiership football?

anyone know if the aldi system does?

none of the systems like this will decode premium stations, they require a different receiver and the appropriate subscription like you would to receive sky here.

These receivers are aimed at ppl using caravans and such, not really at home but nothing stopping you doing so.

They receive free channels only, and depending upon your location you will be limited to what satellites you can view due to the size of the dish. Using lyngsat will point you to all existing satellites, you can use the footprint map to determine if this setup can receive stations off that satellite from the location you intend to use this kit.

yeah what kinda sports could u pick up with this? premier league and india cricket matches would be amazing, wouldnt care bout what language

I cant tell from the picture but it looks like a basic Tevion (rebadged Comag box ) which wont have a cam card slot so it wont pick up the nooky or footie legally or otherwise that I suspect some posters are asking about.! :whistling::w00t:

It's not a bad price for a basic simple free to air complete system. Persoanlly I'd go for a HD Freesat box & seperate install as this box wont have an EPG just "now and next." ]http//ww….uk]http//ww…uk/

$ky Pay Once Watch Forever @ £75 has been withdrawn from sale from the end of July and they confusingly offer "freesat from $ky" (which isnt BBC fressat at all) for £147 which is another typical Murdo$h complete rip-off AVOID... ]http//ww…uk/

I'm sure this deal is pretty good for the money BUT

I bought an HD Bush receiver because it upscales the SD channels using HDMI cable and gives you HD channels as well.

I already had a dish set up for Sky so unplugged the Sky receiver and plugged in the Bush HD receiver.

I only want the free channels have no intention of subbing to any tv package.

I'm told you can pick up stuff like Prem League off a German channel and then tune in to R5 for English commentary. No experience to prove it though so open to being shot down on this one.

Bought a complete (portable) kit from Lidl a few weeks back for £30 (too cheap to leave in the store!) but haven't set it up yet.

Banned

Warning! The satellite dish provided with these kits are very very poor, our Aldi one (not sure if it was the exact one) came with a plastic dish, this was fine for a while but then after a while the LNB became faulty and we couldn't pick up any signal. Replaced it with a metal 30cm dish and its perfect!

Most people would be best get a freeview satellite reciever, buy there own qulaity dish (they aren't expensive) £15 or something and of coare some cable!

Simples

The channels in 'yellow' are free to air, 'green' is HD and the ones in 'brown' are encrypted, so you need a card or receiver capable of decrypting via other methods. And yes, the adult stuff broadcast for viewing outside of the UK tends to be 'full'.

How much would a system be to get the football channels? I'm sick of paying for skysports and setanta/espn only to still have to go to the bar when the matches aren't on tv.

Looks like they are getting cheaper!

I'm looking for a HD version but if I'm honest I haven't got a clue what to get or where to look. I can do the install myself which is the only plus side lol
Good deal, hot from me .....I think

To be honest, if people want to watch Sport or other premium stuff, this is not the receiver to use, find the " satellite " thread posted by Guv on Misc. and read through that, it will give you plenty of good advice.

You will not receive anything worth watching on this unit.

You would be looking at about £150 to £200 for a motorized setup for your required sports needs.

A question from a non-teccie!
Anyone have any idea how this or if this might work abroad? Have property in Algarve that we use insufficiently to warrant satellite or cable but sometimes we are desperate for BBC or even CNN!!!

As long as you point it at the Astra satellite you should get the free to air channels. We use a similar system in a motorhome in South France, the channels we got were BBC 1,2,3 and 4, ITV 1,2,3 and 4, Ch4, E4, More4 some of the Hallmark channels, Film 4,a few music channels and a couple of movie channels (Movies for Men and rubbish like that). I think CNN is one of the news channels for free.
It's worth the £50 but not much else.

ugly dish. one would need to get on that big ladder to fix it to the wall (A&E are looking forward). tuner without HD or harddisk recording.
I'd recommend getting a local aerial fitter to stick a sky dish on the wall (you get it for £75 inc VAT with a bit of negotiation) and buy a better quality tuner
no vote from me on ALDI today

I've read a lot of these threads and still can't say with any confidence that I know what I'm talking about.

Could someone answer a question for me pls? or point me to somewhere where I can get answers?

I have sky+ at the moment, but want to get a a tv solution that will give me as many decent tv channels as possible and still have a user friendly recording feature.

So can I get a HD freesat recorder and just plug it in to my dish? Do i just plug it into the black wires that go into my sky+ box at the moment?

I think you may mean a Freesat satellite receiver because Freeview is terrestrial and you plug in an aerial. :-D

I also use LIdl dishes and LNB's and they are fine.

Yes your dish (well the LNB does) has two cables coming out of it so plug the cables into the back of your HD Freesat recorder.

A Freesat receiver needs one cable into it a Freesat HD recorder needs two as there are two tuners inside so you can watch one channel and record another.
So you can unplug your Sky reciever and plug the two cables into the HD receiver/recorder.
Freesat and Sky use the same sat for both services.

As Halfpenny has rightly described above your $ky+ box will have 2 cables.. just plug those into a Freesat HD recorder and away you go.... oH!! .. and cancel your $ky+ subscription and spend the money you save on a holiday each year!! (If you've only got Sky+ & not Sky HD at the moment, & you have an HD Ready TV, you'll need a HDMI cable (dont pay too much for one!) so you'll pick up BBC HD & ITV HD free with a Freesat HD PVR)

Freesat doesn't have as many channels as $ky but it's free! See here ]http//ww….uk for the Freesat channel info plus there are hundreds of Fee to Air channels (good and bad... and really bad) that can be picked up as well

Here is a superb deal on the Humax Freeesat HD PVR. £229
