Free to Freeze Pure Gym Membership for June (for Ramadan)

Found 11th May 2016
Called Pure Gym to freeze my membership as I'm on holiday for the next 3 weeks (eeeeee!)

Usually it's £5.99 - £20 per month to freeze membership dependent on your location. For June the girl told me it's free to help out those who take part in Ramadan - but not specific to these people.

Not the deal of the century but for anyone like me who needs to freeze for some reason and is umming and ahhing about the value of doing so (had it been £5.99, it only would have saved me £4/month), this makes it an easier decision.

To be totally inclusive surely there should be an option for any member to freeze their subscription for any 1 month of the year. That way if you want/need it to be June no problem, if others choose another month not an issue, everyone wins.... apart from the gyms who count on limited attendance to ensure kit availability!!!

You think they'll do the same in December for Christmas? That's usually the month I can't move from the sofa, let alone get down to the gym.

Strange policy for a gym that opens 24/7

Strange policy for a gym that opens 24/7

not sure what your point is?

if you're away and want to freeze membership rather than pay full price, you can pay a reduced rate for that time.
the reduced rate is free is June.

nothing to do with 24/7 access or otherwise.

My point is, why do the reduction in the first place?

I still don't get what you mean

I'm not going to use the gym for the next month

if I just maintain my usual membership, it's £9.99

if I "freeze" membership for that month, it's £5.99

currently rather than £5.99 it's free

if I just cancel & rejoin I'd have to repay the joining fee

Good to know, heat added.

You want Britain to be about British. No Muslamic ray guns? LOOL!

It's a great deal I'll get to it, thanks for the information.

I don't get idea why it's during ramadan it's a promotion when muslims are forbidden to go gym due to sexism issues.

Not really a fair policy if your from another religious faith...
A bit like Subway removing pork products from some of their stores, it means the rest of us have to miss out too.

How? It's not just aimed at the Muslim community it's also beneficial to all those who wish not to attend this month or if they going on holiday or for whatever reason. Cmon use that big brain of yours!!

Don't you know? some HUK'ers don't really use their noggins much anymore. They just want a reason to be upset.

Why should they offer a whole month of reduced rates / free for only a couple days? Thats pretty dumb. Considering that most people are gorging themselves during easter/christmas and not fasting.

I'm all for it though if it means free / reduced rates for freezing membership.

Erm.. We have brains, we use them. We are obviously just expressing our thoughts based on the title of this thread (Ramadam). Let me just ask, do you think a gym in Saudi Arabia would allow 1 month freeze for Easter or Christmas, doubt it.

So using that brain of yours, you've concluded that you want a UK business to use Saudi as its benchmark for economic activity and business decisions?
they must have done it due to queries from the Muslim Clientele which is fair enough. To be fair, its the reason ive delayed signing up as I felt the month membership would be wasted as I wouldn't be able to use it. will be signing up hopefully after Ramadan.

thanks OP for posting!!

surprised no one has said they will be cancelling their membership or picketing pure gym for their stance (_;)

Why can't people go to the gym during Ramadan? (srs)

Why can't people go to the gym during Ramadan? (srs)

think it's to do with fasting for over 18 hours per day, must get difficult to have a decent workout without fluids..
I think there has been a miscommunication here, I am merely providing a realistic example for comparison. This is not a debate of economic activity or business decisions, it's deeper, this is a debate of ethics and fairness. Do you honestly think by adopting religious excuses for offering deals is ethical? Or does it further segregate people by dividing opinions as it has done so in this thread. As someone mentioned above , it would be great to offer freeze for any month of the year to any religion or race free of charge, do you not agree?

My apologies if I misunderstood, or if my comment came across as unduly rude.

However, I think my point still stands. As you mention, you are providing an example as a "comparison", as a debate for "ethics and fairness" - to say that should a UK business really be offering this discount as a gesture of goodwill to its customers because Saudi would not do the same, is problematic on a number of levels:

1. On what basis do you know a Saudi business would not do the same? Because you haven't heard of it (it’s not particularly newsworthy stuff) or based on a preconception of what all Saudi people in all walks of life are like? That said, I won't preclude from the possibility that you may have lived there or know someone who has, and so you speak from experience, in which case that would be good to know.

2. What has Saudi go to do with this anyway? As per my original point, why should we use Saudi as a benchmark? If it’s a point of ethics and fairness, then it can be done independent of comparison - unless you bring in a comparison to argue that we should be better than that. But here it seems as though you're using Saudi as example to say that they would not do it, so why should we.

As for do I honestly think that “by adopting religious excuses for offering deals is ethical” – I don’t believe ethics comes into it. Case in point, Christmas, do we label retailers who think ‘Xmas is a time for giving gifts, therefore let me offer sales to entice people’ as being unethical? No, they are doing what businesses do, maximising revenue by taking advantage of societal trends. Furthermore, the gym here is not even “offering a deal” – they are merely taking a policy (being discounted membership fee for a month), and for a limited time increasing that discount to 100%. I wouldn’t class that as a deal, in the normal sense of the word.

As for your “any religion or race” point – the offer is to any religion or race, the gym is in no way limiting it to any particular group. To say they should do all year round, is like saying Xmas discounts should be offered to any religion or race all year round at their choosing, and not limited to / associated with the xmas period.

So, apologies for long reply, but I fail to see the validity of your point.

And finally, HUKD is rife with divided opinions. That is not in itself a bad thing, and nor does it lead to segragating people. Yes, I disagree with you, for the reasons stated above, but that doesn't mean I therefore label you as an "other", if anything I thank you for the stimulating discussion.

I usually find one question helps in debates of these kinds....

How would said faith/race/etc feel had they been the only one to be excluded from said offer?

Rather than the only faith/race/etc to be included.
