Free Unlimited WiFi on London Underground with three network

Found 24th Apr 2016
Three have been offering free Tube WiFi for their customers for a while now, but the terms say you must have "used data on our network in the last 30 days".

Now that they're offering the free Data Reward SIMs (the ones that give 200MB a month with no need to top up), you could shove one of those in your tablet, "use" some of the free data once a month, and that'll activate you for the unlimited free WiFi on the Tube! No top up necessary

Register for the free Tube WiFi through the My3 account on your tablet.

Three network is crap in London after they started Volte or voice over LTE that I just left them for Ee. They have no 4g bandwidth left for data after they started HD voice or Volte . What is the use of these gimmicks like overseas data when you cannot even use the phone properly in London. I won't recommend anyone getting this unless you are inside the tube station all the time. I have free tube WiFi from virgin but I cannot use it as one tube starts moving it is not a big available. Only available if you sit inside same tube station for long time.
sorry should have said once tube starts moving it is not available. sorry for typo.
A number of networks provide this, EE, Vodafone, Virgin, Three, only O2 dont as they have a rival network. The service is provided by Virgin and I tend to use when on Tube and you get into a station. While on the line its useless.

I use my three phone in London on a daily basis with no problems at all.
Good to know. Thanks OP. I actually use Virgin to get free wifi and I'm probably about to leave Three after being kicked off of the original One Plan. I just got my Reward SIM a few days back.

Guess depends which part of London you're in.
I normally get good 4G signal with 3 in inner London.
Just gone over to EE. Three far too intermittent in terms of signal and no longer offer rates which are competitive enough to keep me. Asides as has already been said, most operators offer wifi on the tube over Virgins network. Cold from me
would ID work do you know?
No, the whole point of this is a way of getting it free if you're NOT a Three customer. By thinking about ID piggybacking on Three, you're over thinking it.

Aah yes. But it's worthwhile to send a quick message to update someone of your status is you're meeting up with friends.
It'll be long time before we see wifi in the tube itself.

You just have to register once with one of the providers (3,o2,virgin etc) and you can still connect to and use the wifi even if you change sims

But look at your data speed. The voice calls work fine. My data speed was reduced rapidly after three introduced Lte voice in my local area. I even got 5 pounds discount from three engineer with promise the speed will improve once they upgrade the mast but it never improved. On top of that I found turning off Lte bands on my phone and using 3g/hspa+ somewhat improved speed, so that means three network is faster on 3g rather than 4g due lack of bandwidth on 4g/lte.

Although EE customers can use EAP-SIM to sign in rather than a log-in.

Ok that is strange. Is it specific to that part of London you live in or is it in other places of London too?
I travel to and from different parts of London and I haven't seen the significant speed drop.
You mention...free Data Reward SIMs (the ones that give 200MB a month with no need to top up), you could shove one of those in your tablet....but my Android Samsung Galaxy S2 tablet doesn't have a sim card slot as do other Android Tablets so how do i get around this.I'm with Giffgaff network so my Tablet doesn't qualify for Free Virgin WiFi on London Underground, unfortunately, unless somebody knows how.

Easy. Put the Data Reward Sim in your phone, register it, register the WiFi password in my 3, then switch on your tablet and connect that to the tube WiFi, using the phone number from the sim when it asks on the tablet.

Ok good for you. Maybe they did not upgrade your area or it does not have lots of three customers . Earlier Skype calls worked directly from three server ensuring good quality . They also said Skype was free for life which was a lie. After the data problem my voip calls started dropping or not connecting. My EE connection is much better. Even I don't have Ayce data still have connection that works rather than AYCE data which stopped working.

Most probably the crowdedness. EE does have superior 4G connection and with the deal recently for 16gb sim only, it's really tempting.

Kudos to billbennett1 for that.
Last Saturday morning impossible to call with Three in EC4 and SW1.
My phone and my wife either, both on three.
It was an urgent call.
(Finally could call using Starbucks wifi + Skype)...

With these advancement in technology, you'd think you'll get full coverage in big city such as London. Although connection in rural areas needs improving. I struggled to get signal in some countrysides in Wales during holiday
I (like many I suspect) use the tube wifi via a Three PAYG account (in my case not my own, I just piggy-back of a friend actually actively using Three PAYG).

The deal is fine (heat added), but not quite accurate. The Three website itself says that its not just data, PAYG users simply have to have made a call, send a text OR used data in the last 30 days. So using the Data Reward SIM saves pennies a month if obtaining solely for this purpose (although of course has the benefit of the additional - modest - data allowance).

I originally registered my mobile when I was with Three and since then I moved to Virgin and then O2 contracts. My phone still connects to the wifi without me having to log in etc.

I don't think it works with ID mobile. Mainly only 3, EE, o2 and Virgin. (if i am not mistaken)
I dropped 3 for EE when they were the ONLY ones not to work on Newcastle Metro

You're missing the point. This deal is for anyone who ISN'T a three customer. So yes, it will work for you on ID.

It'll work for anyone on any network. When signing on to the WiFi, you just TELL IT youre on three, and log in using the phone number on the free sim in the deal.

Don't suppose you know when the 200MB resets? I haven't had the chance to put mine in anything and was wondering if they all reset on the same fixed day or if it depends on the activation of each SIM.

Depends on the day you activated your sim.

30 Days from activation, then 30 days after that. Check your refill date at three.co.uk/my3

Because it doesn't "work on" any particular network - it's network agnostic. It doesn't even check what network you're on.

It's like asking whether Cathedral City cheddar will be compatible with a Zanussi fridge.
