Step 1: Sign-up for a free account with Callcentric and click continue. CallCentric will send you a confirmation mail to verify your email address.

Step 2: Once you’ve verified the email address, provide your city and country code, agree to the terms and conditions and click “Sign me up.”

Step 3: Grab yourself a free US number from Here

Step 4: Now that we have got ourselves a US phone number, let’s activate it.

4a. Download and install Express Talk on your computer. The trial version is good enough for our task. Make sure that you don’t install any of the “optional components” like toolbars, etc. during the setup.

4b. During installation, choose the default options for all the wizard screens. When you are on “SIP Setup,” choose “Yes, I already have a SIP account” and click Next. Fill the SIP details which would be:

Username: (Taken from the left handside of the callcentric homepage in the format 1777** )
Server/Hostname: callcentric.com
Password: (callcentric password)

4c. Once the setup is complete, go back to your My CallCentric page and refresh it. You should see a notification saying – “your phone is registered.” Done!

Step 5: Download and install Hotspot Shield (make sure you decline the optional toolbar). This is required because you can’t sign-in to Google Voice from a non-US I.P. address.

[*] Hotspot Shield may insert audio ads in websites which are annoying but the reason I recommend it is because the software requires no configuration and you can easily disable it with a simple right click.

Step 6: Start Hotspot Shield, if it’s not already running on your system, and then visit IP2Location to confirm that your location is listed as “United States.” If not, disconnect your current Hotspot Shield session and reconnect to get yourself a new IP Address.

Step 7: Launch the Express Talk softphone software (you may have previously downloaded this software for activating your local US phone number).

Step 8: Open voice.google.com in your web browser and sign-in with your Google account. If you get an error message saying – “Google Voice is not available in your country” – clear your browser cookies and try again.

8a. It’s time to pick a Google Voice phone number. You may enter a US area code and some word to get a memorable phone number or pick one from the available choices. (You may need to switch off hotspot, if Google voice doesn't accept the number)

8b. Enter a four digit pin for voicemail, accept the Terms and continue.

8c. In the next screen, input your local US number that will ring when someone dials your Google Voice number.

8d. Click Call Me Now. Google Voice will call your local number and this should ring the Express Talk software. Enter the confirmation code using the dial pad of Express Talk and once it is verified, your Google Voice phone number is ready for use.

Step 9: You can now deactivate and uninstall Hotspot shield, as it is permently enabled on your google account. You will be able to use this your Google Voice number anywhere in the world.

Thanks, I've updated the 1st post with the correction.

Just to add, Callcentric allow multiple numbers to be created, so it would be straight forward to enable voice on other gmail accounts.

Use the left hand box to choose the location of the US phone number (you have to be logged in). You will then need to click 'Order now'

I use viber or whats app or Tango - all pretty good and free

Will however give this a go - heat, thanks!

Hello, i have a small confusion. so after completing all these steps, i get a US mobile number to call or text from UK. So, i have a friend if US, can i call him for free using this service or is it free only for the number we get from step 3.

The US number from step 3 can only receive calls. Once you complete the steps and get a Google Voice number you'll be able to both make and receive calls for free

The city and country etc part in step 2 - should that all be USA based?

ok i can see this being useful as with viber somebody you want to call has also have to use viber but this you can call any number, ive downloaded talkatone do i configure this to the google number or the us number?

To call US number for free, install Bobsled, available on IOS and Android. I used it and it works. But to have a US number some your mate can call you for fee, follow OP instruction.

SHould I have reegistered with US details when completing the Setup.

hotspot shield is awful. slows your connection down like dial up days

hot, thax op of instructions

2 things didn't quite work for me but I got around them and thought I'd mention them here in case anybody else had the same issues.

1) Hotspot shield would not connect - a reboot of PC resolved this
2) Google could not connect to the CallCentric number on ExpressTalk. Disabling Hotspot Shield resolved this.

Thanks OP

Oh, Hot of course - especially for the brilliant instructions (though they did vary a tiny little bit for me in the Google Voice setup)

Great job!

I'm stuck at Step 8a. I have checked and Hotspot Shield is working as expected (US IP) then I go to voice.google.com but I cannot find anywhere to activate an account and choose a US Phone number.

Could anybody help? Thanks in advance.

EDITED: I've sorted it out now. Using a different browser did the trick. The link to "get a google voice number" finally appeared that way.

You need hotshield just when registering for the Google voice number.

After it's complete, you can remove hotshield and it'll work perfectly from a UK IP address.

this looks interesting, will try to set it up tomorrow when im not so tired

Awesome! The entire process only took me 15-20 minutes and I have a google number now

When trying to register a Google Voice number it first asks me to add the forwarding number but every time I enter the number given to me by IPKall it fails to work! I keep getting the message: "There was an error with your request. Please try again." (My callcentric phone is registered successfully)
I even created another US number but Google Voice keeps failing to add the numbers as a forwarding phone; anyone else had this problem?

Thanks

Ignore the instructions from that link........try from step 3 in the first post

Looks like Google Voice Doesnt like Callcentric numbers..
Any alternative guys??

if u have iPhone, try "GV Phone", best app for gv and not some sort of "one of the best"

only available at US app store

Anyone know where I can get a Free Canadian Number - Vancouver in Particular?

has anyone managed to make this work on a Blackberry tablet please??

I've added a 'step 9' to the first post.

Hotshield is only required for the sign up process, once Google voice is activated, it can be used within the UK (or worldwide) and as such, hotshield is redundant.

Thanks OP
