Apparently this is not for those aged between 70 and 79 but those that are 70 or 79. My dad has his last week 2 days before he was 80 as the receptionist said if he waited he would be too old! The receptionist said my mum couldn't as she is 74 and she will have to wait until she is 79!
This is also what was reported in the Mail on Sunday yesterday.

OP I'm not sure if you edited a paragraph from their page, but it definitely doesn't say "between" 70 and 79, just 70 and 79 like the above poster has mentioned.

We encourage anyone who is offered this vaccine to take it up. Because it is a booster to your own antibodies, it is relatively side-effect free with only headache or soreness at the site of the injection reported.

My mums been on steroids for years and as such has a reduced immune system and has been told if she comes into contact with anyone who has shingles she must go straight to her doctors. She herself has already had shingles twice, but has been refused this vaccination because she's 82yrs old !.

Not one that I need as I'm a few years off that, but it is definitely worth knowing about. Thanks OP for highlighting this.

As a point regarding age, later in the page it states:

Which, as written, means that anyone between 70 and 79 will be able to receive the injection. However, according to MIMS, Zostava has been available as an NHS prescription for anyone over the age of 50 since July 2012. So if you feel that you are at risk of shingles, you should talk with your GP about the vaccination. If you want to be able to print out the MIMS page, you can find it here:

I wonder if the government are conspiring to give the slightly older something else

Is there a shingles epidemic then?

No, but it's much more common in older people, and particularly unpleasant for them. The vaccination is a relatively cheap and painless way to avoid them getting Shingles - and in the longer term saving money for the NHS.

shingles is not contagious, it's just herpes which is a group of viruses that hang around your nerve endings occasionally causing troubles including but not limited to genital herpes, cold sores, shingles (from chicken pox), bells palsy (not yet fully understood)...and so on.

As this a live vaccine , those who are immunocompromised should NOT have the vaccine, ie those on high dose steroids, on chemotherapy or who have cancers effecting their immunity such as lymphoma, leukaemia etc. Shingles vaccine is different from flu vaccines which are not live so can be given to the immunocompromised.

The shingles vaccination programme is being rolled out in phases, with the aim of vaccinating everyone in their 70s eventually. To start, its the 70 and 79 year olds and then there will be catch up programmes for all those in between. There isn't enough vaccine yet to immunise everyone , so the programme is starting with the 70 and 79 year olds.

Another vaccination to weaken the masses.
