Not a terribly useful picture. I've lived in several black areas and my current supply is 387ppm as calcium carbonate.

When I ask 'one lump or two' I'm not talking about sugar.

Search on your water companies page, they tell you by postcode what your water hardness is.

After shower, if you see the watermark... that hard water.
It dont matter how hard it is, either hard or soft

Or just look inside your kettle. If you eat limescale with your tea, you have hard water :-)

If you go onto your local water company's website they have information about water hardness in your area!

Do not buy a Brita water filter expecting it to remove limescale, because it won't unless it is coming our of the tap in lumps.
All uk water companies add Chlorine to tap water which is easily removed by an activated carbon filter, by boiling or by leaving it to stand for a few hours.
However most water companies also add Ammonia to your drinking water. This binds with the Chlorine to form Chloramine.
Chloramine will not gass off by leaving the water to stand, boiling also doesn't remove it. A carbon filter can remove it but not as effectively.
In summary Brita water filters are a very expensive way to remove contaminants from your tap water.

They dont all add chlorine. Some use Ozone, and you cannot mix the two together.

Brita are flogging their filters with this deal. We have their jug and filters and since using these, the kettle base does not fur up for months and tea is less scummy than the drinkers of it here . Lately however Brita are trying the printer ink trick, of 'locking' their jugs to their filters so you can't buy 3 party filters - there's a special valve design. At the same time, Brita claims to offer a recycling scheme for those chunky plastic filter objects, but you need a participating local supermarket for this. Our local Waitrose does not participate so AFAIK this is Brita virtue signalling. (edited)

The “George” branded ones by Asda still fit the new Brita jugs but don’t bother with Wilko ones, the water just sits above the filter.

Fine! So if we have hard water, what should we do??

Well when we got ours installed over 5yrs ago it was £1200 for a Twintec block salt system, but it is based on location, number of rooms and what type of softener you go for. Harvey block salt where I am is roughly £5.50 for a pack which we go through (4-bed house) in around 4 weeks. I think we are on the higher side of use as we've got kids who like to bath / shower regularly though so you could stretch it longer

    Is Heavy Water double ard??
    C0mm0d0re_K1d's avatar
    C0mm0d0re_K1d
No its radioactive and will make you sick or kill you!

Drinking heavy water in small quantities does not harm. But, drinking in larger quantities for a prolonged period can cause dizziness and low blood pressure.

If the amount of heavy water in your body reaches 20% of the total water in your body, it could be lethal. Tritium atoms, rather than deuterium atoms, are found in some forms of heavy water. Because tritium is heavier and, more crucially, radioactive, this version is even more dangerous.

Same!! I cleaned my kettle last week and already I’m getting black/brown deposits. First time I noticed a few months back I thought ii might have broken a tea bag somewhere although I can’t imagine how it would happen. Anyway it’s happening again

I still remember being on holiday in southern spain and either the water or their filtering process was so incredible that it took an age to remove the shower gel as there was barely any friction. Compared to my Bristol, Reading, London life.... (edited)

Moved into a house in Hampshire that has a water softener and had the same thing with the shower gel and shampoo. We use so much less now as the soft water makes it froth up so much more, feels so good. Wouldn't live without one now. Granted they are about £1.2k now but no limescale through the house at all (I do have to descale the kettle as I use hard water for that but that's no biggy) 💪

My water is so hard, even Chuck Norris is scared of it.

What's the best way to remove the hard water/limescale from the back of the toilet bowl please? I've tried all the products off the shelf, and they are rubbish. (edited)

You can also try original coke or own brand cola or anything containing high amounts Phosphoric Acid. Or you can buy Phosphoric Acid cleaners.

Unfortunately I live in a Thames water area so don't really need strips to tell me how hard the water is or bad it tastes. The one thing I will say in favour of Northern Ireland is that they have great water.
