O2 launches its free nationwide Wi-Fi broadband network today, pitting the UK's largest mobile operator head-to-head with rivals including BT and The Cloud.

The Spanish-owned operator will open up free Wi-Fi access to all internet users, including customers not with O2, through partnerships with restaurants, shops, and high street retailers across the UK.

O2 said it will double the number of premium public internet hotspots – those which do not piggyback on existing residential networks – currently offered by rivals by 2013. O2 claimed it is the only "genuinely free" Wi-Fi network and the only one open to customers from other companies.

The demand for data-hungry sites such as YouTube and the increasing popularity of smartphones, such as Apple's iPhone, have put a huge strain on operators' Wi-Fi networks.

thanks (should be in freebies)

Has the potential to be quite good, but how are O2 going to make any money out of it?

I guess it's kind of like investing in advertising as people will obviously know the name of O2 (not that everyone already doesn't, but you see what I mean)

It's advertising, you have to hand over your phone number, and agre to receive ads, and they are charging the operator of the wifi hotspot...
Personally, having seen how they manage the existing connectivity to the cloud hotspots, I don't hold out much hope, and this comes from an o2 customer...

at least it will be FREE

They should be investing more money into their **** network instead of trying to scam yet more money.

What a cheerful person you are...

Cold.mods please move this.

Is there a list of the location of the free wifi hotspots?

Heat from me!!!

Even if it is not great its better than a poke in the eye;)

I've been on Virgin Mobile, 3, Vodaphone and O2 and by far for me O2 has the best reception by a long stretch.
I get full reception everywhere.

Stop moaning and leave it where it is, its not really doing any harm to anyone is it!

Heat from me...i get a satisfactory service from O2 (broadband customer)

this isnt a deal its a FREEBIE

O2 are fine. Though I would rather have 2 for 1 cinema tickets than this.

I am sure it is specifically O2 going TO launch

thanks

Voted cold. This isn't a deal or even live yet. O2 have just announced their "intentions".

Actually, you may find others have done it. Just needs a mod to finish it off. Ever thought of that?

Its quite amusing watching people get all worked up about the location of the thread!

Its only the internet FFS, you don't have to come onto this website.

hold on, I didn't get that.
I'm confused. so what are they actually offering? free wifi in public places, like starbucks or alike?

ok, but is O2 going to biuld their own hotspots only, or can customers use the cloud and BT thingy for free as well?

and the obvious question is: what fair usage policies apply??

O2 should really put more money into their 3g network.
2g coverage is great but their 3g is awful!

This is a news story - isn't a deal

it is about as national as my home wifi router

i'm bit confused here..
i hope they are starting wi-fi service.. that should be specific to some hotspots or some restaurants rt? what's the benefit for us if its within a hotspot? (another connection in airport or McD) !!
They already had it ..

would be great if they have provided Data services rather than just hotspots wi-fi !! they could have upgraded their data/gprs services for this money !!
I still feel these service providers have lot to do for seamless internet connectivity for modern equipments (like iPad) rather than some making hotspots wi-fi
