One may have to go to the ticket counter to ask for the free WiFi code if you have pre-booked your railway ticket in advance.

It’s not just First Class that has the gift of the web. Our on-board Wi-Fi is now free in Standard on our trains when you book direct with us at virgintrainseastcoast.com.

You’ll receive your free Wi-Fi code(s) on your booking confirmation which is emailed to you as soon as you’ve completed your booking with us. Naturally, if there’s more than one of you you’ll get a code each, so you can all sit, surf, send emails and stalk Facebook friends to your hearts’ content.

Oh, one thing – you must be opted in to our marketing to be eligible for the free Wi-Fi (it’s all highly amusing though so win-win, really).

The code is case sensitive so please type it in exactly as it is on the card.

If you’re a Season Ticket Holder who travels with us on a monthly or longer season ticket then you can get your free Wi-Fi code by emailing our Wi-Fi support team here with your name and photocard number.

Stay online all the way
Our Wi-Fi uses mobile data connections to give you coverage up and down the route. It automatically selects the best connection in the area, for a drop out-free signal.

How to log on
Most mobile devices are set up to access Wi-Fi straight away. To get connected simply:

Select the ‘VirginTrainsEC-WiFi’ network when prompted (or in your Wi-Fi settings)
Launch your internet browser and you should then be directed to virgintrainseastcoast.train where you can log on.

It’s East Coast only
Our glorious on-board Wi-Fi - and entertrainment service BEAM - is only available on Virgin Trains East Coast services. So if you book a journey with another train company on this site, our free Wi-Fi won’t be available.

I wouldnt bother - its terrible - very poor speeds and constant drop outs - ok for a few emails / facebook (not over a VPN though...) but not much else...
Virgin and WiFi don't go together. BEAM is quite good, if not limited with what they have to watch/listen to.
Great, now I just need to save up for 6 months to be able to afford any kind of train ticket whatsoever.
WiFi was quite good when we went to Edinburgh but we were in 1st class so maybe that made a difference ?
I live near the railway. Perhaps I should just tap in to the trains as they go past. Can't be worse than what they pipe to my house via a piece of wet string.

think you might have been lucky. Taken the train to London a few times first class and it has been diabolical. Maybe it knew I only paid £20 for the ticket..

Will go nicely with your overpriced cup of tea and wilted ham sandwich from on board 'catering'

I think it does, wifi worked fine for me when I travelled in first class, but when I'm in standard the wifi sometimes won't even work for me until about half an hour out of Euston, and even then keeps cutting out.

Not necessarily true. If you know when you're going, you can get a 1st class ticket from Edinburgh to London for £40. Also some of the rail discount cards will give you good deals.

Well I didn't mean it to be taken literally
I have found the Wi-Fi to not be that good
