I bet some of you were wondering why Microsoft keep saying Windows 10 Creators' Update is coming but never upgraded your PC? Certainly the case with me, though I didn't want to mess around with installation media etc.

No need to mess around now, just click on the link and they'll upgrade you in the background whilst you're working as normal! Hey presto - new operating system for free.

support.microsoft.com/en-…ere

Edit: just installed it - first impressions? - I like it & my PC is running nice & quick with its new operating system, I call it 'Windows 11'

No you don't get Windows 10 for free it's just an update FOR Windows 10

You may as well just not bother, if you didn’t update when it came out in April you should just wait 2 weeks because the fall creators update is out the 17th, pointless updating twice now.

Since the Fall Creators Update comes out next Tuesday might be worth waiting and updating then so you only have to update once to be on the latest version.

Was not even aware of this, thanks.

Mine updated automatically the other day

Nevermind, I just noticed mine already updated too haha .

Mine just in a bootloop, uninstalled windows update assistant and then manually went to update but saying is upto date? I'm on 1511

Make sure to set a restore point!

...but will it be the same story with the Fall update? ie available to update via installation media for those keen to be early adopters but not generally released for another 6 months...

update via this link in the background is a no messing around way to get yourself a nice quick clean-running operating system just by clicking on the link

this is in effect a refreshed version of W10 so exactly the same as a new operating system

however, you'd presumably need W10 already installed to get this update

W10 is still free for people running W7 or W8.1 - anybody need the link?

Background update has been available as a background update since it released, you’re just not very good at windows.

Hmm I wonder what this will screw up?! maybe Edge will start working again after it failed on 2 PC's on a recent update.

factually incorrect - at first you had to go get the installation media and use that

I'm no computer expert but still savvy enough to put me in the top 10% of computer-savvy people, I guess - it comes from managing our family's laptops & PCs - about 15 in number (UK & place in the sun) - and keeping them all updated

Mine forced installed this on me last weekend, downloaded and installed it all on start-up.

Performance feels a bit erratic too.

You can still update to Windows 10 for free from any pc that currently has win 7 or 8. Just download the win 10 iso from Microsoft and update.. no need to use the assistive technology method

iOS 11 is out and it's FREE! PS4 FW 5.0 is free too! Hold my beer while I post some deals!

Thanks

"No messing around" - If you're lucky. If your machine is a bit old like mine then be aware there may be much "messing around":

On my machine, after 6 hours the upgrade failed and it rolled back. After a second failed attempt I did some googling and found that not all manufacturers have updated drivers to work with Windows 10 Creators Update. My Acer Revo R3610 was not supported anymore. Also, as of a few days ago, Windows 10 November edition is now at end of support (after only 2 years!) which means you won't receive security updates.

Note. Microsoft will continue to attempt to install this again and again. You have to download a tool to hide the update. Even that failed to work after a while and it tried to install it again! And, even if it does work you no longer have full protection.

If I'd left Windows 7 on my machine I would be protected until about 2020, now that I upgraded to Windows 10 my machine is stuffed for Windows.

Thoroughly fed up with Microsoft on this after a year of nagging me to upgrade. I have just installed Ubuntu 16.04 LTS on the machine. Its working much better and its supported for a few more years!

for most people this special update has not installed in the background - it was released 11th April from memory and has not installed on any of our 15 computers

so if you wanted it, you needed to use the fiddly installation media tool

no more messing with my deal - just point & click, bob's your uncle

and btw it IS a new operating system - my PC's dead quick and so far the downloads & getting PC ready has taken over 90 mins, that's a whole new OS for the uninitiated

Thanks for the heads up - had a 4TB external drive file in me so whilst I’m spending time trying to recover any data, I’ll make sure to back up my computer at the same time in prep for Tuesday, just in case!!

About time greedy microsoft dropped the prices of windows updates.

Op, it's really nice of you to justify posting this to everyone who doesn't reckon it's a deal, but you don't need to - just ignore them. Just like they should be ignoring the deals/posts that don't interest them (like this one for example!).

This is not purely a deals site, & as long as the powers that be (HUKD mods) are letting it stay, it's fine in my book & many others' I'd imagine.

Seeing that you're an avid poster anyway, I don't think the negative comments are going to discourage you from posting similar deals in the future, so keep them coming

cold, its not like you can upgrade from 7 or 8 or 8.1 to this, you have to be on 10. its effectively a feature and security update, like any other that requires what amounts to a full upgrade install. Not a deal, just info that all windows 10 users will get eventually automatically.

think of it as 'Windows 11' - Microsoft have decided that for the next few years they'll stick @ number 10 - so 'big' upgrades that in the past would have seen (say) Windows 7 ---> Windows 8 will now just stay @ 10, even if it's a whole new operating system

Did anyone know that Windows 7 Service Pack 1 was available too? Oh, too late...

I've seen as lot of machines not get the Creators update because the user has not gone through the privacy settings review screen. You have to do that and not just close the window which is what many do. The update won't be available via Windows update unless you review and accept the privacy settings.

im aware of microsofts strategy for future updates, but its not a free update, its what was in the terms and conditions and road map when you either bought or upgraded it. this isnt an upgrade, its an ongoing service contract.

For anyone with an NVidia GPU, think very carefully before applying this update. There is an ongoing issue with games stuttering following the Creators update which NVidia and Microsoft have still not resolved. I experienced this issue myself and after 2 or 3 frustrating weeks, restored my system to the previous version using a backup. I also recommend taking an independent system backup before upgrading since some users attempts to restore to the previous build using the Microsoft roll-back feature failed.

ive heard this aswell, hasnt affected me on a 1080ti, but im running on a 4790K and z97 chipset. i wonder if its the newer chipsets with the issue.

To back up what many other retractors are saying above; this isnt for everyone; a lot of older cpus are NOT supported by this update, trying to manually install it will bugger up your PC.

M$ and Intel have dropped microcode updates for a lot of older cpus, and M$ is deliberately excluding them from Win10 updates beyond the current version.

Reports from people I know who installed this the day it was released have also reported a lot of problems made worse, and very few made better.

You misunderstand, I'm not talking about reviewing privacy settings during install. Before you are allowed to install the Creators update a popup will appear on your desktop, like this one:

32207615-ONeXR.jpg
Until you actually review and accept the privacy settings in that window, you won't get the creators update via Windows update. Closing it effectively refuses installation of the Creators update for a period of time.

For someone who puts himself in the top 10% of computer-savvy people, you should have known that...

Downloaded the other night. Takes a few restarts and a long time to install!
