Scammer: Those wipers need replacing sir, it be a mot failure and the plod will arrest you if you drive off, we can't let you go without replacing them, it will cost you x amount. Me: but I just bought a pair from you earlier and your colleague installed them

Scammer: your flux capacitor is also showing a warning light and needs replacing but the part is on back order. Me: mate you know you are making stuff up!, Scammer: no sir, I assure you I am not, it's an essential part of the car.

Scammer: just topping up your screenwash sir. Me: I beeping hope so after spending over 100 squid on this free winter check, hold on a minute why are you pouring screen wash into the engine oil filler spout mate?, that is for engine oil not screen wash!.

Scammer: no sir, I am qualified and I know what I am doing sir, it helps keep the engine clean. Okay all done sir!, rest assured that your car is now in tip top condition and all set for the winter!.

Me: why is the engine not starting mate?, Scammer: the flux capacitor has failed sir, I did mention this before

Surely, by the time you'e waited for someone to finish their break, clear the queue at the checkout, see to the 3 people who arrived before you, fetch some more screenwash from stock because they've just run out and then waited for them to quote all the urgent jobs they've found, you could have filled up with fuel, got home, done the checks yourself plus the tyres, showered and changed, and be sat in front of the TV with a brew and a biscuit?

Or am I missing something?

Good for the heads up. But to be honest if your a able driver, you should be able to do the checks above at any time of the year! Not just winter. Why aren't tyre tread depths checked? Because most normal Halfords stores don't sell them.
guaranteed to find something in perfect working order that 'needs doing urgently'

I'm fine thanks I'll get them again. Simple.
Free check then hounded to death to get you to replace items that don’t need replacing yet. Thanks but no thanks

I'm probably going to offend the ladies on here, but I think this freebie is probably ideal for them

Offended, I do my husbandscar checks as well
You can probably take a brand new car and they'll still say something is wrong with it.
They are v honest in my local and have given me advice not to waste my money on certain things. However they are so slow and had a twenty min wait for someone to look at my fog lights when the shop was empty!
Oil check?
Surely everyone does that every week?
Or is it just my car that'll be empty if I leave it longer than 10 days to check it?

"your off side parking bulb is out"
yeah, but it comes back on if you slam the bonnet
They've always been honest with me in my local too - told me how to save money and to not buy things I thought I needed but didn't. And for that, I'd go back - I guess that's what it's all about..

my local halfrauds tried and failed to fit a bulb to a renault laguna (mine), failed to fit a babyseat in an astra (workm8) and gave up after 40minutes trying to fit a headunit to my old dear's clio after convincing her to buy all the extra adapters and cables that weren't totally necessary. yeh I wouldn't trust them to open the bonnet properly let alone check anything related to safe winter driving.
Surely only a complete moron wouldn’t be able to check their car themselves for the sake of 50p’s worth of free screenwash

I know a few girls and guys that don't have a clue.
I go every summer and winter and have done for last year. As a new driver living alone with no friends nearby it's a necessity as I've no-one to teach me how to do this stuff. They've never tried to sell me anything. Would definitely recommend my local store

On line videos are many peoples teachers now and can save a fortune on garage costs. I have saved £1,000s doing work myself. I have also seen free car maintenance courses for women.
My partner can do the basics and change a tyre. Though I've said try looking helpless first and hopefully someone might change the wheel for you if it is ever needed.
Mind you nothing wrong with getting free checks if you trust those doing them!
not worth the petrol, unless you know absolutely nothing about the car you drive. In which case you really should not be driving it!!!!!
Nothing is free. They will tell you you need new this and new that CON!
Thanks for posting - heat added..... women know about cars don't they???
I want to know why that woman in the thumbnail is pouring nail varnish remover into that engine
Be careful letting halfords anywhere near your car probably end taking it to a garage they seem to break things not fix them. Wouldn't be surprised if they they put through screenwash in the wrong spot

I'm surprised - my Mazda doesn't use a drop between annual services (albeit that's only c3k miles). Is there a black puddle underneath?

Not a single drop under there.
With the amount she uses my drive should be as black as night.

They said it had a" minor oil leak" on the last service, which the bloke I bought it from had it in for when I bought it in March
My brother degreased the underside of it and it's still clean so the oil must have been from a spill and she must be burning it - but no smoke from the exhaust either so lawd knows
She's a 2007 and got 114k on her now though so not exactly low mileage for a petrol, and some of those are towing miles.
Going up the viscosity at next oil change, providing she gets through her mot without needing too much and see if that makes a difference.

I've got a tub of that screen wash in the garage - it's berry scented, really nice.

The stuff I got was concentrated 5l for around £3.50 in January 2016

Well considering you can buy 5 litres from euros for £2.34 delivered I’d say it’s not
