XBMC is a fantastic cross platform (Windows, Mac, Linux) media centre. It's very powerful, has loads of features and is customisable and extendible via plug-ins.

XBMC is open source, it will always be free and people can help improve it.

"Currently XBMC can be used to play almost all popular audio and video formats around. It was designed for network playback, so you can stream your multimedia from anywhere in the house or directly from the internet using practically any protocol available. Use your media as-is: XBMC can play CDs and DVDs directly from the disk or image file, almost all popular archive formats from your hard drive, and even files inside ZIP and RAR archives. It will even scan all of your media and automatically create a personalized library complete with box covers, descriptions, and fanart. There are playlist and slideshow functions, a weather forecast feature and many audio visualizations. Once installed, your computer will become a fully functional multimedia jukebox."

It does look stunning but, why would I use this rather than Mythbuntu which has support for tv cards built in?

I've read people say that XBMC is superior to MythTV in terms of UI and performance. XBMC has native MythTV support I believe, so you can use XBMC as a front end. I don't have a capture card so I can't really comment much further, though I'm sure it's all documented on the XBMC page/wiki.

Looks interesting - I'll have a play about with this....

this is brill on my original xbox and is as good as any streaming software out there

Cant get it work with my ps3 it sees it but cannot stream anything

XBMC is the best media Center I have ever used, and I have tried a few.

Been using this for years now fromthe old xbox and now on Windows, plays everything you throw at it with style and ease.

Much better than the boxee spinoff IMO.

What are you trying to do with your PS3? XBMC is for watching media...not for streaming it to other devices. So in effect, XBMC does what your PS3 does... but a lot more too.

been using XBMC for years on the origional xbox, have also used it on my laptop for the last couple of years. Amazing piece of software.

my life has never been the same since getting xbmc in my life

XBMC + ACER REVO = Heaven

For my PS3 i find PS3 Media server the best. It not only plays all the media on my pc but can also run stuff that is on my dvd from the dvdrom.

You go to the link in my 'Clickable links' post labeled XBMC for xbox.

i set up a spare htpc with ubuntu recently and have it boot straight into XBMC. It really is the most awesome media centre I have used to date, I even have it set up so I can use my iPhone as a remote control for it!!!

@arduino I must be being a bit thick clicked the link and read through the wikipedia page but could not see how to install this onto an xbox that has an old xbmc installed on it. Any help gratefully received.

The wiki article links to the xbmc4xbox.org/ website, from where you can download the lasted build for the xbox. Click 'Forum' and follow the link at the top with the Xbox log and the text "Latest nightly build".

Cheers

thanks

I'll take a look, not really looked past Windows 7 MC so far

Has this only just come out for windows/mac/linux?

yes just came out, always follow the releases personally, up until today/yesterday the "stable" release was 9.11, but they also do other releases for the community to run and test... most recent of which to this stable release being dharma release candidate 3... love XBMC and have it installed on all my computers

I ended up haivng to use the DSPlayer version of XBMC because the latest DC3 didn't seem to use DXVA on Win 7 for me. I might now try this version 10.0 to see if 1080p is now smooth like DSplayer - we'll see.

XMBC has been on these platforms for some time, this is the latest release.

Is it worth buying a 2nd hand original Xbox and using it as a media server for the bedroom?
I've only got a 28" CRT TV in the bedroom and a dvd/divx player.
Don't really need it for the livingroom as already got the pc in there, plus Virgin HD and an Xbox360.

How easy is it to install?

Interestingly enough, I picked up three xboxen from cash convertors for £5. They were all marked as 'broken'. The first one I plugged in worked fine. I then applied a softmod so I didn't have to fit a chip, and installed XBMC. Works a treat playing music and movies from a drive on my home network.

Every so often I see an xbox offer on my local freecycle group.

chers thanks for the info

I'm guessing this won't make the Xbox360 play files that it doesn't already play? Like MKV for example?

I don't watch any videos on my pc I stream them all to either xbox360 or PS3 (whichever works best) but there are always some files the consoles won't play and I have to convert them.
I'm reluctant to install this if it's not going to make any difference to streaming, on the other hand if it is I will be most interested!

Thank you.

Sorry, I don't have a 360 so can't really advise.Good luck

If you want a decent streamer that transcodes files that aren't able to play natively on the PS3.... I use the windows beta version and it works great, played everything I've thrown at it including big .mkv files, little .flv files and the usual .avi etc

Thanks for that, I will download it and check it out

anyone used this and media portal?

I've been using media portal for about a year now but there is an android app for XMBC that turns your android device into a remote control for XMBC?

If someone has used both I'd be interested to know which you think is best? I'm not bothered about recording from tv just viewing avi and mkv files.

There is an android app:

I use it on my HTC magic and it works a treat.
I've no experience with mediaportal, perhaps someone else here has, or ask over at avforums.

No worries, I use it every day for my PS3 downstairs as the PC is upstairs and less hassle to stream stuff than load it onto USB... plus it transcodes anything that the PS3 can't usually play like .mkv files. Upstairs I just use xbmc straight from the PC to the TV

Was checking every day till Saturday and missed the release. Will have to wait till the christmas break to get my install redone on my ITX system.

Hey hey! I installed it and watched an .mkv file tonight and all worked lovely! Thanks so much for that, saves me the hassle and time of converting them to a watchable format! Thank you again for the link.

No worries mate, glad you like it, it's a decent app... it also allows me to share stuff with my HD television too that has an inbuilt media player (DLNA).

I've been told by one of my mates that the 'Confluence' skin is the best one so might be worth giving that a try if your new to this. Media Portal without the StreamedMP skin isn't much of a looker!

I'm going to give XBMC a go over xmas when I get chance to have a play!

Confluence is the default skin.

I am using and loving Alaska

You can do so much with it even on the original xbox can't believe they stopped updating those :/.
Haven't played around with it a lot on the pc will give it a go.
