Freedompop - refurbished Samsung Galaxy S4 offer for £71.99 + free trial

Found 11th Jul 2016
I was offered this deal for £99.99 + VAT for the phone initially but when I looked again recently and clicked through to their website, the price is £59.99 + VAT making it £71.99! No P&P. This deal is worthwhile just for the phone alone. The free one month trial is for 1000 minutes etc. You can leave anytime, no contract, and they have a free service of 250 minutes etc. a month. See other postings on HUKD - with some uncomplimentary comments! - and their website for details. I thought that if I don't like their service, I can switch to another service provider or sell the phone if I don't like that - should be able to get my money back.

What's the catch? Will it be unlocked?

90% it will be faulty...and 100% you will be dissatisfied with service from FreedomPoop!

dwl99 - see previous posting(s)/comments about Freedompop - people say it is unlocked and also say it would be easy to unlock anyway. My son put his SIM in the phone and dialled it, and it rang. Freedompop have confirmed to you below that you can use the phone with a different provider.

dman7866 - I should have said my offer was by invitation e-mail so my deal might not be accessible to everyone. I suggest anyone interested can make an enquiry to them and then wait to see if they send an invite. Also since my posting, Freedompop have supplied a link - see their comments below - showing the price I gave of £59.99 + VAT making £71.99. No p&p charges.

I am impressed by Freedompop's attention to the posting and trying to satisfy those who have amassed a prejudice against them. On the other hand, I was not impressed when they said my posting is inaccurate; because it is not and there is no basis for their claim. Their website is inaccurate and unreliable when trying to use it

Hello,
The phone will come with FreedomPop service and will be ready for usage immediately out of the box. However, if you are unhappy with FreedomPop mobile service, you can always use the phone with a different provider.

Hello,
We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. Please PM and a representative will certainly assist you.

Wow a lot of haters for this company...

Are they really that bad?

I'm assuming this would be a good deal if it was provided by say, Amazon?

Got this myself last time round, using my EE sim it keeps saying it cannot detect sim, googling suggests it is an s4 issue not network issue. I did try emailing them and they responded in a couple of days so cant complain too much - contact details are difficult to find though

isn't price stated £119.99

I found you get a faster reply if you email the CEO and you get forwarded to someone who knows what they are doing.

We sincerely apologize for the inaccurate information regarding the deal. This is the correct link to the deal. uk.freedompop.com/off…eal

My first thought was you may have contacted "Ferrdompop", but I could see you hadn't. Then I spotted you left your message on a forum and figured that was your error. I have to much time on my hands, so I checked on their website for support. Their help link didn't work on IE11 or Firefox, so I agree with you. RUBBISH AVOID.

did you get it sorted? The s4 I got today is doing exactly the same thing as yours.

Aargh - should have listened to others. The S4 they supplied does not recognise any sim card. Put the freedompop sim in another phone and it works fine. In fact I used it to call the customer care line which is closed. PM sent to Freedom pop rep and complaint logged to freedompop - blooming useless. Hope I get contacted soon or I'll be asking my credit card company for a charge back.

Sigh, the S4 you supplied does not recognise any SIM. Faulty phone as the SIM works in another phone.

I have sent phone back, no reply, nothing. What a crap service, unbelievable!!! Already requested refund from my credit card.Just pray their service be shut down in the UK soon... OFCOM said they received thousands of complains..

Edited by: "TonyBet" 16th Jul 2016

Yeh,better they be shut down.Less pain in the ****!
I know 7 people, who have FreedomPoo sim cards and none of them can receive calls: all they receive "You missed call" text. Phone doesn't ring nor shows incoming call. Can call tho, but quality is very very poor most of the time. Some times they have to dial 3-5 times, as all they can see - "Call initiated" and nothing happens....
R I P FreedomPoo...
Check this video out. Not sorted until now

I wish to clarify my posting. It was more about the phone offer rather than the freedompop service offer. I thought that was clear in the posting. £72 for a reconditioned Samsung Galaxy S4 is a good deal from speaking to people about it. There is no obligation to use the freedompop SIM card; so you can keep the phone and use another SIM instead. The phone looks like new and seems to work fine.

I think most people have voted on freedompop, rather than the phone deal. On freedompop, I would confirm the criticisms of others; they are incompetent. If you phone them, you get orientals talking at 19 to the dozen and when you ask them to slow down, you still have difficulty understanding them. So I reverted to e-mails. Ultimately, I sent them an e-mail saying their app was already downloaded on the phone when I received it, as they said I should download it to solve my problem, which was when I tried to activate it so I could make calls and texts, it said my e-mail was already in use!!! How else would they accept it was the correct e-mail, if they didn't know what it was already i.e. already in use?!?! So no phone calls and no texting! I listed 6 or more questions which they had failed to answer, including taking me off the free trial offer and only putting me on the free service if they could resolve the problem. They seem to have abandoned me - no acknowledgement of that e-mail. So don't believe their postings on here inviting people to contact them to solve problems, because I don't believe they are capable of doing so.

Shame the S4 they sent me was faulty. I'm now battling to get them to accept it's faulty and issue me a returns authorization so I can extract myself from this awful mess.I'll give them a few more days then I'll be asking my credit card company to do a charge back refund for the faulty phone.

I really did want it to be a good deal and experience but it's been abysmal. They even had the nerve to send me repeated customer service questionnaires. Phone has now gone back and I've asked them for a full refund plus my postage costs as the clearly sent me a faulty device. Guess what. So far I've heard nothing

Well it's been 10 days since I returned my faulty S4 supplied by FreedomPop. Surprise surprise, no refund and they have stopped responding to my emails. Please, please please don't make the same mistake I made. Avoid this company !!!!!

manicmidlander - freedompop have also stopped replying to me. If freedompop won't refund you, make a chargeback claim against your credit or debit card, as I have done. Also ensure you tell the card company to cancel any mandate or other instrument given to freedompop to draw payments from your debit/credit card. When you signed up with them, you got a free trial of their 1000 minutes etc service and after that trial, you will go onto the service every month, for £8.99 I think, unless you take steps to stop them taking those payments. I believe this arrangement is contained in their terms & conditions, as with other phone service providers. This applies to others in the same situation.

Thanks I'm in the process of doing the same. I already downgraded from the free trial to the basic free service. Called them again today and raised yet another case. Need to wait 30 days before my credit card company will perform the charge back. Sigh.

Freedom pop is one of the worst carrier experiences I've ever had. As many others have noted the voice quality is rubbish, but for some reason I've also had a major issue around call answering, which after over 2 months is still unresolved. At first they seemed to think a faulty SIM was to blame so they sent me a replacement. This made no difference but they still charged me £4.99 for it( along with another £4.99 for the original one). The support inquiry relating to this was then terminated with ’problem resolved’. This was to prove a frustratingly recurrent theme. The email support is laughably poor. They asked for the version number of the Freedompop app I had installed and I responded with v2.3. The reply was ‘Our Freedompop app is NOT compatible with iOS 2.3, problem resolved’. Unbelievable!

All this might be par for the course if it were really a free service but thus far I seem to be paying more than I did with EE. The initial free trial of the premium service is obviously a trick. They obviously expect users not to realise they need to cancel or they will pay for it. I fell for that old trick I'm ashamed to say. I didn’t notice until I’d paid a month of that @ £12.99 and another charge of £4.99 which I imagine is for the next tier down. I have no idea how this came about since I didn’t request either service. Also there were the 2 charges of 4.99 for SIMs and some others that still remain unexplained.

I urge you to avoid Freedompop unless you're a fan of frustration, time wasting and poor mobile service.

Original Poster

reegez - if you paid by debit or credit card, and the service you received was faulty in any way, you can reclaim all that you have paid through the chargeback system. Contact your card issuer, explain the problem(s), and tell them you want to make a chargeback claim. They will either send you a form to complete and/or ask for evidence like any e-mail exchanges which you can forward to the issuer. I have just been refunded £71.99 under chargeback for the phone on a provisional basis, which will become permanent if freedompop cannot explain why my refund should not be permanent. They may argue that I still have the phone but my issuer should tell them what they told me, which was that as the service was faulty, it is for freedompop to collect the phone - it is not incumbent on me to pay for it to be returned.

Don't forget to tell your issuer to cancel any mandate for freedompop to draw payments from you account.

Hope this helps you and others. See my earlier comments on here for more information.

Finally got my refund which has taken many phone calls and emails. However Freedompop are refusing to refund my return postage costs for the s4. The fact they sold me a faulty device means they should have paid the return postage. This means they have contravened the UK sale of goods act.

PLEASE AVOID THIS COMPANY! By far the worst customer service i have ever received. Taken a month to refund a faulty device and they have refunded the costs minus VAT!!!!! I am fairly certain that is illegal and am certainly going to be following up with these clowns. Do yourself a favour and avoid avoid avoid!

Got the exact same BS from these jokers - company policy apparently. I was happy just to take the money and run but they couldn't even get that right - did they refund you £72 or did they refund the plus VAT price of 59.99 as they did with me?
